Another sterile supermarket on the high street. Yes they are convenient, you may get the odd offer…read moreand you know exactly what you are going to get because it is the same as the other hundred Sainsburys Locals. Could you do a weekly shop here? Potentially if you are a single guy or girl. If you are a couple or in a family, forget it, you need a proper supermarket. This place is great for the impulse, that night pick up meal.

I gotta say, as a single student who doesn't want to pay 10 pounds for a meal every night (but is…read morealso too impatient to cook), this Sainsburys has been a lifesaver. The multitude of last-minute, healthy, pre-prepared meals here is exhaustive and has gotten me through many a late night (where I desperately try to find food after 10pm only to find every other store around closed other than the area's many fried chicken shops which, inexplicably, seem to be open 24/7!) As someone who tries to eat vegetarian as much as possible, I've also found the veggie-meal selection to be quite good - and there's an aisle of fresh produce veggies that's also satisfactory for anyone on the run looking for something nutritious. I can choose between a variety of salads chock-full of grains, nuts and healthy vegetables, pasta salads, fresh shrimp combination meals, indian masala portions, tapas, stews, veggie pots, etc - all for bargain prices (ie, under 5 pounds per meal). My recommendations as a Sainsburys pre-made meal connoisseur (ah, the joys of being a student)? 'Innocent' pots (full of vegetables and vegetarian options, with cute recyclable labels and a variety of flavours at 3 pounds each), the vegetarian/shrimp Indian platters (complete with jasmine rice, sauce and veggies) for under 5 pounds, and the quick-grab sandwiches, most sold for under 4 pounds and filled with tasty veggies. My last thumbs-up? The self-check outs. This way, when I'm too tired/rushed to deal with a human (which happens often), I can check myself out and hear an (oddly soothing) android voice tell me thank-you-for-shopping instead ;)

Budgens just reopened and I'm glad for it as it's a nice alternative to the crappy Tesco express…read moreclosest to my flat. It's not huge but has a decent selection of products and there are certain things I like more than other supermarkets in the area. First, there is a huge cheese selection - much bigger than even the large grocers in the area. They also have quite a bit of high-end smoked meats. They have very nice looking prepared food, much better than your average Sainsbury's meal deal (although more expensive). Their pastries look beautiful but again are very expensive. They have small sections to cater to dietary restrictions like vegan and gluten free. The store feels very nice and upscale and clean overall. While not as cheap as the other local options and without the variety of the larger stores, it's a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

Thank you nice postal service worker that was quick. What's this?... there's something wrong with my feet! they're going in the direction of the chilled produce rather than the front door... Luckily I didn't have any cash on me otherwise it would have been all gone for sure. It's like a posh neighborhood health food store (Americans, think Adronico's and kind of whole foods but with a little bit of Safeway select discount items thrown on some center isle displays. There's lots of yummy looking premade foods and a nice looking seafood section and some olives in pots thrown in there for good measure. They definitely seem to cater to the lunch crowd in here. Or at least to the poor susceptible fools who shop on an empty stomach. You have to wind through a maze of prepackaged yummy treats before you get to the registers. Naughty Budgens! Evil Budgens. That's the only part I don't like.

I found that to be really annoying. I'm not sure why they can have two entrance points. That aside, the store has a nice selection of items including fresh fish and meat counters. Expect to pay more than your average supermarket at waitrose - even their generic items or branded items marked as being on sale are still more expensive than at Asda or Morrison; but they also do have items that other stores might not stock. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but would stop in if local. I can't comment on service because I didn't interact with any staff. Checkouts are self service.

From the minute you walk in you actually gasp at its size, clean and wide open spaces and on a sunny day, the sun shines through the large windows making it look even more stunning! I know what you're thinking - surely it's just a supermarket store? But ohhhh no. There's so so so much more to it! There's a wine bar, juice bar, bakery, cake bar - plenty of seating for if you'd like to sit and enjoy your purchases, oh and of course a great selection of groceries. There were actually a number of families and friends meeting here to enjoy lunch together so it's clearly very popular in the area. I know it's odd to say but if you are ever in this area do pop in, take in its beauty and enjoy a tea and cake - I can't tell you what the cake is like but I can tell you that you won't be disappointed about this store!
