My boyfriend liked it so much that he said we should always come back here for meat, rather than walk down to the market or Waitrose in Holloway. It's the small independent food shops at the end of Brecknock road and York way that make me soooo glad we moved to this area!! Yum. **Yelp admin folks: This is actually called Cramers Butchers...I tried to edit it, but it won't change...**

Just ask for the cut you want and the butcher will either just cut you a piece or suggests something better. I'm moving away from Green Lanes next month and the thing I'm most sad about leaving is Baldwins…read more I've never had a good local butcher before and it's been such a treat to have this one on the doorstep. They're incredibly well stocked and knowledgable with produce from all corners of the world. They're not poncey or crazily overpriced (I'm talking about you Meat N16). They're welcoming and encouraging and they've inspired me to try cooking all sorts of bigger cuts of meat as well as answering all my novice questions. We've made rabbit ragu with meat from Baldwins as well as squab pigeon with cherry sauce, herb crusted lamb, Sunday beef joints, lamb shoulder rogan josh, duck liver pate, turkey mole (with a whole jointed turkey which served an entire Mexican Christmas party) and baby back ribs to serve 7. We had to buy an especially big pan for those. They also sell cheap organic free range eggs, award winning manchego cheese, loads of delicious looking Parma hams and chorizo as well as good store cupboard essentials (the tomato purée in the red tin with the swan on is lovely) and special treats like panettone. Thanks Baldwins! It's been an education and a joy.

I love this place! Not only is the butcher fantastic, but they also know their wines and cheeses…read more My wife and I started going to the butcher after it was converted from Rosslyn Delicatessen a few months ago. Little did we know that it was going to become our favourite place in Hampstead. Each Saturday from 1:00 - 4:00 they offer a complimentary wine tasting. Through this event, we've gotten to know Avie, one of the partners that is responsible for distributing the wine. Avie is incredibly knowledgeable about wine and always makes a wonderful recommendation. He also recommends in-store goods that pair nicely with the wine. I've enjoyed tasting the foie gras, chicken parfait, chirizo, peppercorn salami, etc. - all of which are affordable and available in small portions (100-200 grams). We've also had the opportunity to meet Keiko, who works behind the cheese counter. She is equally as knowledgeable about the cheeses. As you can tell from this review, we've gotten to know the staff - and can't say enough positive things. They are all very helpful, kind, and the quality of goods at the Hampstead Butcher is unmatched. Tip: They have a great selection of Italian reds. I recommend the 2008 Poggiobello Pinot Nero from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Take home a bottle of this wine and pair it with some Manchego cheese and peppercorn salami.

At the back of the store there is a cheese counter with a nice selection of British and European cheeses, as well as a well stocked wine cellar. In addition to all of this they sell vegetables and other ingredients that you might need. I enjoy seeing small local business succeed and I am happy that this place is doing well.

One reason why I like the Corner Shop is because they have a very decent selection of German-like…read more(in other words: dense & moist) breads. Be sure you get a fresh loaf though, because sometimes they have breads on display that are a day old and they have really lost much of their deliciousness! In fact, a trip to preserve fresh bread is to slice it all up when it's still fresh and put it in the freezer! Furthermore, the folks at the Highgate Corner Shop make quite nice sandwiches and you can actually decide what goes into (or onto?) your sandwich...and the sandwiches are really cheap! I only wish they would use the nice whole-meal bread that they are selling by the loaf to prepare your sandwich - but I guess the rather typical English clientele still prefers their white toast...
One of the best things about living in Highgate is the Corner Shop…read more It has the loveliest tasting bread I have ever tried especially the spelt wholemeal loaf which has been our staple for years. They have organic bread, delicious walnut brown bread and a vast selection of other types which are fresh everyday. The delicatessen has a lovely range of cheeses, salads, chicken skewers etc and the best ever tasting humous which visitors to our place who try it all remark on. They sell a huge variety of products compared to Tesco and if you ever run out of anything or need anything, how ever obscure, the corner shop will have it! The owner is very friendly and the lovely lady on the delicatessen counter and all in all it has a wonderful community feel. Sadly, it will be coming to an end in December 2015 because due to the landlord increasing the rent extortionately, the corner shop will have to close after the owners long fight to keep it open and after 35 years of owning it! What will Highgate do without it and it's lovely friendly shop keepers.
