I travelled from Glasgow to Liverpool and back again and found this station really simple to…read morenavigate, its small and clearly signed and toilets are free to use. There are places to eat, a boots chemist, costa (although no in-store seating) an information desk and a left luggage office which was fantastic. I was greeted by a lovely man who informed me that it was £3 for an hour or £9 for 24 hours which I think is very reasonable and very handy. In the station you will find statues of Ken Dodd and Bessie Braddock which are fab. There aren't many seating available but it seems on a sunny day most people sit out front on the steps. But I would rate this station 'very good' and felt comfortable and safe.

The station has four platforms, and there are some covered areas where you can wait for the trains. When I was there at 8 AM on a Monday, the station wasn't manned, so keep that in mind if you need assistance or want to buy tickets in person. The signage could be improved -- the platforms aren't clearly indicated, and I had to walk along the platform to figure out where I was and to find the display panels showing train information.

The station is down a small road off tunnel street and the decor is stonewall and it looks quaint and small more like the type of train station you would expect to find in a village in the country rather than a metropolitan city such as Liverpool. The staff are always polite and helpful and there is no shortage of information regarding your travel that they will give to you. So to summarise theres nothing standout about this place but I have always found that the people make it great and it is a reliable and convenient place to travel from.

It may not be the central station in town, however it could do with a makeover since it appears dull to say the least. It also has a lonely atmosphere as it has a long and wide stretch of tunnel. Especially if you're on your own during less peak times, it feels quite dodgy. In terms of finding your way around, it can sometimes be puzzling with the lack of sign-posting and assistance. It does feel as though you've been swallowed up in this subterranean world. Central station or James Street station would be a better bet, which are not so far in the city centre even if it means walking a few extra minutes.

Chester Railway Station really doesn't do a great, historic town in Chester any justice, Chester…read morewas once a Roman fortress, a battlefield in the North West of England, but the station which is a category B station just doesn't seem that. The walk into the city from the station I agree is poor, I personally ended up getting lost having to go down some sketchy pathways, which really didn't match the city which I found to be really nice overall, a lack of buses going to the station too (Stagecoach Gold do run an irregular service which doesn't seem to be used either as I was the only passenger on the entire bus - maybe it was just because it was a Monday afternoon?) It has 7 platforms and is served by Avanti, Transport for Wales, Northern and Merseyrail. I do find the station pretty hard to navigate too, I ended up using a lift which went to a bridge (between the platforms) after getting off the train, even though it was level access - to make it more confusing they had a gate which you could see the exit out of, but you had to walk all the way around the platform, to go back on yourself just to get in/out which makes little sense. They do have ticket barriers here, I'm not sure if it's the new thing but I noticed 2 or 3 people while at the station trying to get through the station barriers, even jumping through to do anything they could to evade the fare. Some key routes here include Transport for Wales services to many big cities in Wales, and the Avanti service into London, however, if you're going into London Euston, trains here run every hour (but for some reason, there isn't a train at 18:35 when there is at 15:35,16:35,17:35, forcing a two-hour gap with the next service than at 19:35, so you might be best going into Crewe depending on when you want to travel and it takes roughly the same amount of time. Even Manchester services are the same - for my journey to Chester I boarded an Avanti service into Crewe, and then another service from Crewe to Chester which used the London Euston - Chester line, I found this journey to be much more pleasant than other alternatives (It was even better than a direct service provided by Northern or Transport for Wales, the latter I used for my return), this means you spend less time on the train but obviously changing services with a 20-minute wait makes it less worthwhile, but still if you time t right it helps save some money too! There are a WHSmith and a small cafe/shop in a waiting area on Platform 4 but there isn't much else in the station sadly. I'm not sure if it was a problem on my visit but the announcements for train runnings didn't seem to be working very well at the station, for example, I nearly missed my train back into Manchester which arrived in early as I was in the waiting area at the time (luckily it was on Platform 4) It has a good number of services but for the overall consumer passenger experience, it has a long way to go to do justice for the great city that Chester actually is. 2*

They like to change platforms at the last minute and it isn't the easiest station to work out where the trains will arrive with split platform numbers (A & B). Good connections to London, Warrington, North Wales, Manchester and Liverpool. The station has that old time chiq look. Unfortunately it is one of the most depressing parts of my journeys.

It's not often that you can say something good about British public transport, but this new…read morestation, opened in 2006, is one such place. Built to replace the former Allerton and Garston stations, the new station provides an interchange between Merseyrail's Northern Line, running from Hunt's Cross to Southport, with the Liverpool-Warrington-Manchester and Liverpool-Runcorn-Crewe lines, as well as providing a major bus interchange for Liverpool Airport and other local services, and parking for 240 cars (already fully used) and secure storage for motor-cycles and bicycles. The station is built on the sort of scale and quality we're not used to in Britain: the main building is bright and spacious, with a ticket office (for both bus and train services) and three disabled accessible toilets (token-operated, available from staff for free). The toilets are amazing, and talk to you while you are using them, telling you all about their features! The electronic timetable displays give details of bus and train departures, as well as flight arrivals and departures from the airport. The building itself is environmentally sensitive, with a rainwater harvesting system, geothermal heat-pumps for heating and photovoltaic cells to generate electricity. There are no shop units in the station yet, nor a buffet facility, though these are apparently planned. The station is fully accessible, with lots of lifts. My only gripe with the facilities is that there is no heated waiting room on the platform - it can get pretty chilly on a windy February day! The Northern line operates a 15-minute interval service on weekdays, half-hourly on Sunday. The Liverpool-Manchester service operates every 30 minutes, and that to Crewe and Birmingham every hour. Buses run to the airport and Liverpool City Centre every ten minutes. Unfortunately, neither the trains to London nor Norwich stop at the station - in the former case, frustratingly, because the platforms are too short. But overall, this is a real asset for south Liverpool, and is currently used by over 5,000 passengers a day.

Once you've been to Liverpool South Parkway, most will surely agree that it is more than just a…read moretrain station. It's a bus station, taxi-pick-up and drop-off point, free car park for rail users, refreshment stop and bicycle park; the list is exhaustive I know! On top of all that, with fast and frequent bus links to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, it's also a great place to start your holiday, all housed in an award winning, environmentally friendly building. If that's not enough, on Mondays to Fridays, it is believed that nearly 300 trains call there every day. This a top transport station in Liverpool. If you haven't used the station before, I would suggest taking a look inside and see how good Liverpool South Parkway really is.

If you're In Like Flint, then you might be visiting Flint Railway Station. Or you might not, I'm…read morenot sure. This is a lovely little station in North Wales, and much like many other North Wales stations, the beautiful Station House, which in this case is these wide and beautiful thick old style chimneys. It is actually known as one of the best stations in the whole of the UK because it's so pretty. Only one train comes through here an hour, but it's absolutely gorgeous, with a sculpture on the outside and a cute bridge and of course the beautiful white Station House. So all in all it's one of the best examples of a North Wales station, and almost feels like a nice welcoming home rather than just a station. It has a smaller building on the other side which looks a lot like the bigger one. And that's it.

In 2008 Flint station won a "best station in the UK" award. That really doesn't say much for the…read morerest of the stations in the UK. Actually it isn't particularly bad, it has a very pleasant indoor waiting room which must the best (and warmest) waiting room at any station along the North Wales coast. It also has a ticket office. But that's about it, there's no cafe for one thing, although the station is located in the town centre so you can quite easily pop across to Subway or Tesco express for food and drink. Perhaps the "best in the UK" prize was awarded for something this station offers that is worth celebrating, it offers an easy escape from Flint!
