How blessed to be able to borrow a peds wheelchair for our sweet grandson. Having this small wheelchair has made getting around at school possible after breaking his tibia. It's very easy to setup a pick up time, make sure you have the required documentation during pickup. You're greater at the door and given a walkthrough on the product you've selected. You get to borrow it for six months and from my experience, it's been a total game changer. We borrowed a wheelchair, It's easy to maneuver. I am currently renting a knee scooter for a heel tear and am not able to use my foot. Everything was great as far as ordering online and the staff was so kind and even loaded the equipment into my trunk. Very sweet staff. My only issue is their hours are terrible. I work full time plus im a Navy Reservist and had to take off work to accommodate their hours to pick this equipment up. Also, the locations are far and there are only two. If I were to buy the knee scooter, they are expensive and then id be stuck with it unless I found someone to sell it to. So I would say be more accommodating with people trying to work through their injuries. Make a day where you are open late or a half-day Saturday mornings. Other than that, I am thankful they offer loaner equipment for people like me that need it for about 6 weeks. Also, they take lightly used equipment in as a donation to use for others. read more

The Convalescent Aid Society (CAS) was established in 1923 and has been providing local communities with free rental on in-home and durable medical equipment. I first learned about the CAS from a case manager from a local hospital and I only wish I knew about this much earlier. [Eligibility]: Anyone regardless of financial status (mostly seniors and disables but also work for young people with broken arms/legs) can sign up and rent free medical equipment as long as they meet (1) residency/location requirements - must be living in the greater Los Angeles area, (2) two additional contacts on top of the person who will use the equipment - responsible party aka co-signer [an additional person responsible for equipment] + additional contact [someone else who knows the client, but who doesn't live at the same address]. So the applicant will need to obtain address, phone number, and email address for both additional contacts. Once the free equipment loan application is submitted, the CAS will review the application and send a text link/email to schedule an appointment to pick up the desired medical equipment. [Medical equipment]: Please note that all equipment are subjected to availability. If they are available, then the website will say "In stock". If not, then the website will say "Waitlist Available". Medical equipment include: bath chair, tub transfer bench, hospital bed (therapeutic foam mattress not included and not free - $260 per mattress), cane, crutches, bed rail assist, exercise peddler, IV pole, over the bed table, patient lift, transfer board, toileting aids like commode & toilet safety frame, knee scooter, front wheel walker, rollator, wheelchair, and wheelchair ramp. The CAS also sell certain items like bedding in a box, commode pail liner, fitted sheet, and hip kit (Long-Handled Bath Sponge, Polyethylene Stocking Aid, 26" Folding Hand-Held Reacher, Plastic Shoe Horn, and Black Elastic Shoe Laces). [Pick-up]: The approval email will tell the applicant to bring the applicant driver's license and co-signer's license as well as proof of residence (utility bill like electricity, gas, and water - if these documents are not available then bring the rental contract). For my 1st time visit, I came here 10 minutes ahead of scheduled time and I realized visitors cannot enter the building. Visitors MUST park and wait in the designed parking lot behind the building. I told the staff about my appointment and the staff only checked the applicant's and co-signer's licenses (first time visit). The staff didn't check other proof of residence like utility bill. However I only brought driver's license for the applicant on my second visit (the applicant didn't come in person this time) and I was still able to pick-up additional medical equipment without an issue. [Rental duration]: Each equipment rental lasts 6 months and the CAS will send a text message or email on renewal notice. There's no time limit on how long the applicant can hold onto these medical equipment as long as they continue to submit renewal notice every 6 months. [Return/Donation/Repair]: No need to set up an appointment for anyone who's returning or donating or repairing the equipment. If the staff can't fix the equipment on the spot, then the staff will replace the equipment for free. This is simply an amazing free service and one of the best hidden gems for anyone who cannot afford to buy mobility equipment. In addition, some of injuries are short-term and it just doesn't make sense to buy a brand new wheelchair or walker. read more

I have been aware of this organization for decades since the time my mother needed equipment. We started her with a cane, then a rollater. The process was easy and painless. I recently had foot surgery and was in need of their services myself, but found after making a drive to their office that their policy has changed since covid. I went on a Saturday, but had to wait till the following week after applying online and getting approved first. Not being able to get equipment same day was disappointing, and setting up the online account was a bit of a hassle- getting all the required info necessary, but otherwise, everything afterwards was quick and easy. Thankfully I also had a friend that was willing to be a guarantor. I'm not sure what happens to people that don't. All on all, I'm grateful for this organization and all they do. My son recently had a stroke. I needed a wheelchair to get him to his medical appointments. A friend and relative suggested Convalescent Aid Society. The application process was simple. The wheelchair is on loan to me for six months. If he needs it longer which hopefully he will not, I can extend the time. The person helping me when I picked up the wheelchair was very kind. I am ever so grateful for the services that the Convalescent Aid Society. My grandmother had a fell that led to a fracture in a spine. During her recovery period, she needed durable medical equipment, and the Convalescent Aid Society provided a free means of obtaining the equipment she needed. The application process online is very easy, and within a week of submitting, I was able to obtain a shower chair, toilet seat raiser, and even a fully electric hospital bed! Everything was free except for the delivery fee of the bed, which we didn't mind at all because the Society even came to our home and set the bed up for us. All the staff are friendly, and even when there were minor issues with the bed, they came to our house to repair the issues so quickly. They wasted our time. I went to pick up items that were reserved for someone who is bed ridden and asked me to pick them up. I had screen shots of their ID and utilities but that wasn't enough. Obviously they couldn't be there and they said they couldn't give me the items. I ended up buying them for them because they needed help ASAP. I have picked up items before with no problems so it was ridiculous. I understand there are rules, but sometimes I think they should be a little compassionate with the situation. I didn't see anywhere it said that a reservation was needed so I didn't have one. Fortunately I was able to get an open spot. I am truly pleased and greatful to this society. I am 51 years old, pending surgery soon for a total hip replacement. It has gradually become more and more difficult to walk, and sometimes I feel it kinda goes out. So a cane was not cutting it anymore. However, purchasing equipment that I can't return didn't make sense either. Knowing that I will recover after surgery, and no longer need it. So being able to use this walker temporarily prior to, and after surgery in recovery is exactly what I needed. The facility is very nice outside the building, and employees are kind.
