This market comes 3 times in the year, the third week in April, the third week in June, and the third week in September, always Wednesday to Sunday. Sometimes their PR team does a good job of publicising their arrival. Other times, it's just a surprise to see it there, like this time!
Every time the market is here, there are certain things I always buy - souvlaki I just can't resist, even though half the time I end up wearing a decent portion of it; delicious freshly made macaroons; and beautiful, fresh French bread. I took a break from the vast quantities of cheese this time and may keep avoiding until Christmas, but if you're a cheese enthusiast there are never less than three stalls selling different kinds. It's like a cheesy wonderland.
This time I paid a visit to the Croatian delicacies stall and bought some lovely sweet chestnut paste and a nice chocolate fig preserve. I also got myself a delicious lamb tagine from the Moroccan stall on the Sunday before heading to the cinema. Everything is always amazing. One stall that doesn't get nearly enough love is the Jamaican cuisine stall. Next time, I'll be having a goat curry!
Another star of the market is the Viking crafts stall (I'm not sure that's what they're called, but that's definitely what they are). It's instantly recognisable as they've even made their own stall in a Viking style. The pieces of jewellery they sell are all classic iron age reproductions, and they are beautifully hand-crafted using traditional methods. I bought a beautiful, bronze penannular brooch when the April market was here, and this time some pretty zoomorphic dragon brooches caught my eye, but alas I missed out so I'll have to buy in September.
If you've never partaken, please drop by in September and give the vendors some love! read more
