Probably worst of all were the constant sinus infections, 5-8 infections each year. I was always on antibiotics--the last infection took me through four different antibiotics and none would help. I was referred to Dr. Knapp's office a couple months ago, and he went through my CT scans, did an exam, and determined the root cause of my problems: small cavities, infected tissue that no medication would help, deviated septum, and just very small airways. He gave me lots of options, and also mentioned surgery. I have heard how awful sinus surgery is, but he told me that while he can't guarantee it to cure 100% of my ailments, that it would make my life significantly better. So, I went in a month ago and had turbinate reduction (he took an inch off from one cavity!), removal of the infected tissue and opening of my passageways, as well as a septoplasty. A month after the surgery now, I feel like my entire life has changed. I haven't coughed once! I used to stay up all night coughing, every night. The recovery has had some pretty disgusting parts, but I can't tell you how amazing it is to be able to breath. I only had dissolvable packing, which I heard is the worst part of the recovery, and no bruising at all. He's a miracle worker, and his staff is fantastic: his nurse was always available to me, (he even called me twice on the phone, which I have never heard of a doctor doing before), and his billing staff worked diligently to get my stubborn insurance to cover the cost. Another reassuring point is that I see an amazing doctor for my asthma and allergy issues, and he and Dr. Knapp told me the same things about treatment, ailments, recovery, without ever even talking to each other. I was very impressed that these doctors were on the same page. :) He's amazing!

I was prescribed antibiotics even though I was told my ears looked healthy. Doctor instructed me to take antibiotics for 7 days then as needed, this information was given to me physically on a paper as I left and documented in my clinical notes online. I went home, applied drops (which set me back $100 on top of visit fees) as recommended and suddenly had major ear pain. Contacted doctor next day who claimed to never have said to take them when documentation proved otherwise. When I sent proof they stopped responding. They are negligent and ended up causing an issue when I didn't have one in the first place. Do not waste your time, money or jeopardize your health here.

I made the…read moremistake of finding a surgeon to do my nasal surgery from online reviews where there were over a hundred positive reviews. That doctor seemed very pleasant and so I had him do my nose surgery. Unfortunately, my troubles with breathing didn't get any better and actually got worse after surgery! It was just so tiresome, I couldn't even use my CPAP as I was so stuffed up. After many visits to that surgeon and second opinion where I felt I just got the run around, a friend who works at Swedish and my sleep doctor recommended I go see Dr. Yang who is apparently the surgeon to see if you have a breathing problem or things related to congestion and sleep apnea. Their words were "skilled, talented, ethical", "master surgeon who makes it look easy". After bit of an ordeal in securing an appointment, Dr. Yang walked in, punctual, lighthearted, and with that unmistakable swag that you know comes from experience and confidence in his craft. He soon recognized the problem and described them in simple terms that no one did before. The front of my septum was deviated worse than before and my nose was collapsing. The first surgeon also did completely unnecessary sinus surgery in areas that was normal to begin with! It was validating and reassuring to see that I wasn't imagining things. Ultimately I needed a tricky revision surgery instead of medications or kind words. Dr. Yang also saw that there were areas in my throat that may give me good chance to improve my sleep apnea. He is frank, honest about what he believes he can or cannot do. He is clearly motivated by desire to help if he feels he is able to despite the challenging circumstances. More difficult revision surgeries apparently doesn't pay doctors any better. No wonders other surgeons shied away! Surgery scheduling was done by this really sweet lady Jelana and on the day of the surgery, Dr. Yang and his team talked to me before going under and put me at ease with their positive vibe. Recovery was sore because I also had throat surgery but I was well warned of that! I'm almost a year out and I have to say this was a life changing experience. I breathe freely, sleep deeply, and my sleep apnea is almost gone! One of my doctor friends recently told me that the best doctors often have the fewest, most random reviews despite being in practice for decades and despite being the best at what they do. They don't market or solicit reviews to get fluff reviews. They are busy taking care of their patients and honing their skill. You find them by asking trusted people around you, other doctors or people in healthcare, people who actually know them and their quality of care. That's how I found Dr. Yang who listened, identified the problem, and most importantly, had the willingness and the technical skills to help me despite many things that made it difficult. Word of mouth from those who know is your best guide. Dr. Yang changed my life for so much better!

She had me wait for an hour an a half and ended up seeing me at 3 pm!! Well, I can't explain how frustrated I was considering how hard it was to schedule an MRI appointment for people with a cochlear implant. And after she stepped into the room, all she's done was talking about signing a waver that releases the her liability, blah blah for 10 minutes, until I stopped her. She never talked about possible complications even after I asked about it, she just said, well there could be any complications which I don't even know about.. Anyway, steer clear of this doctor.

I'm not big on bedside manner and I'm not looking to make friends; I'm looking for an exceptional surgeon. I'm no stranger to surgeries and this was my second time around for sinus surgery and deviated septum. He took a couple extra steps another surgeon didn't take 14 years ago during the first time around. So far the results are spectacular and I would certainly recommend Dr. Burgoyne.
