But, I was glad to see that Herr's is one that's still around. I was coming from Gettysburg, so I signed up for the last tour of the day. (I was the ONLY one who had!) But, I got there several hours early, and they were really nice about switching my reservation to one that was only a half hour away. The tour guide (I forgot his name, but it starts with a Y) seemed new, but he was doing a really good job. He walked backward the entire time so that he could engage with us as we walked around. He explained everything we were seeing and he answered all the questions he was asked. Not only was it fun watching the chips and pretzels being made, the aroma of the whole area was wonderful. Note: They are only in production Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Be sure to make sure they're open before you go.

He was knowledgeable, kept things interesting, and added humor throughout the tour, which made the experience even better. The tour itself involves a good amount of walking, but it went by pretty quickly. I personally really enjoyed seeing how the chips are made--it was super cool and something I've always wanted to experience. My kids felt like there was a bit too much talking, but they still had a good time overall. The highlight for them (and honestly for me too!) was getting to sample some chips at the end. The only thing that would have made this experience even better is being able to taste more of the different snacks that were mentioned during the tour. We were given a bag of kettle chips and pretzels, which was nice, but it would've been fun to try a wider variety. Overall, a fun and worthwhile experience, especially if you're a fan of Herr's!

The harbor views are beautiful and vast, and the signage within the observation area talk about all the neighborhoods and give a history of Baltimore. There's even a small section dedicated to honor the memories of Marylanders lost in the 9/11 attack. Pricing is very reasonable at just $8 per person, and the elevator ride to the top is quick.

Pricing is only 8 dollars for each adult which is a great price to go up to the 27th floor of the World Trade Center. There are four different sides of the building with written panels explaining what landmarks and buildings are out in that direction. The views are spectacular. They also have tributes to those from Maryland who perished in the World Trade Center in New York on 9-11. There are also several panels listing movies filmed in Baltimore and famous people from Maryland.

Street parking. Unfortunately at the time of our visit the gates to the Westminster Burial Ground were closed and locked but we were still able to see the headstone between the iron fence in the front corner of the cemetery. How sad that he died at a young age of only 40 years old. I didn't realize that our visit on MLK Day, 1/20, was just one day after his birthday ( Jan 19, 1809-- Oct 7, 1849). On the headstone the incorrect date of Poe's birth was engraved. He was born on January 19 not 20) Poe's full name is written in capital letters on the base. Review #3668

I visited Ladew Topiary Gardens for the first time this past weekend, and I can't believe it took…read moreme so long to check it out. Located in Monkton, Ladew is only a half hour from Baltimore, and it's well worth the drive. Ladew's gardens were establish by Harvey Ladew in the 1930s. The grounds contain 15 garden "rooms," arranged around two cross axes with vistas. The garden is noted for its topiaries, and I was blown away by the gardens' beauty. I took tons of photos! It was a beautiful, slighly chilly early May morning, and we wandered into every corner of the gardens before reading our books on the hill over looking the meadow behind the Manor House. We accidentally visited on the day of their 18th Annual Garden Festival, so they weren't offering tours of the manor house, so I'll definitely return for that. But the gardens were beautiful, and we made visits to the Studio (where you can see some of Ladew's paintings), and the Barn Gallery, and the Cafe (which sells sandwiches, snacks, pastries, coffees, etc.). Ladew is lovely. It might be the most beautiful garden in Maryland! I am certain I will return for another visit. On a beautiful day, there's no where else in Maryland I'd rather be!

The left turns onto a fast country road and again into the estate were a bit of a challenge! We especially liked the fox hunt topiary! More than just topiary, several themed gardens on 27 acres. Did not have time to explore the nature walk or the house. Watch out for the Osage orange trees along the main road; they drop large heavy fruits from tall trees! Good fall colors at the north end near the Temple of Venus. We had a tasty lobster bisque and pumpkin scones at the great restaurant in the former stables. Ate at an outdoors table.

There's a map avail online and at the county visitor center. We were able to find about five just using google and all but one or two we could drive through. The park is clean and easy to get around as you may go at your own pace in your own car touring the park stopping at attractions. The map is easy to use and follow. Or you can purchase an audio tour or rent bikes. Love the history and the information provided. Great attractions that makes you feel in the moment when visiting. Love George Washington's quarters and the barracks around the park along with the artillery park. Hands down one of the best major attractions that you must visit when in the area.

The Wilmington & Western Railroad is a non-for-profit primarily weekend and holiday tourist train…read moreoperation that runs on ten miles of track along the historic Red Clay Creek from Greenbank to Hockessin Delaware. The line started serving the area since 1867 and became a tourism line in the 1960s. The RR is mainly operated by volunteers and enjoys strong community support. After having to be rebuilt as the result of two devastating hurricane-related floods (1999 and 2003), the W&W resumed full operation in July 2007. The 2003-07 rebuild cost more than $10 million and was designed to help prevent future destruction from high water. The railroad operates two steam engines, two diesel-electric engines, and a self-propelled railcar (The Doodlebug). Two passenger rides are offered (with commentary on the outbound trip). The shorter one goes from Greenbank Station about half-way up the line to the Mt. Cuba picnic grounds, which are furnished with tables that are available free to riders. You can get off the train, picnic, and then catch the next train back to Greenbank. The ride each way is about 30 minutes. The longer ride, offered periodically, goes the total route to Hockessin and terminates next to the shops at Hockessin Corners for a total ride of about two hour and a half hours. Special themed rides are frequently available all season long from February until December. Any of their cars or an entire train is available to charter for private parties whether on a regular operating day or on a day when you could have the entire place to yourself. Looking for more of a unique experience we have chartered one of their three cabooses here just for the fun of it. It was a good call as the caboose had a cupola that all 4 of us were able to sit in. The views from up there were great you can control whether or not to have narration in the caboose. You will have one of the volunteers riding along and he was truly a wealth of information about the history of the line and of the area as he was obviously able to give more information than just what is told to you off of the script.
