From the moment I approached the entrance, the dark, gothic atmosphere, vintage artwork, old books, and unique decor immediately caught my attention. This is not a traditional sit-down bakery or café, so I went in knowing the experience is more about getting the famous cookies and taking in the atmosphere, appearance and taste of the infamous cookies. There can be a little bit of a wait outside, especially when it's busy, but honestly, I found the experience to be part of the fun. Inside, everything is incredibly detailed--from the creepy-but-cool portraits and antique-style displays to the shelves filled with Gideon's memorabilia. Even the signs and artwork have their own personality. It feels almost like stepping into a haunted library with a bakery hidden inside- move over Disney's Haunted House. Ok back to the real item, of course, there are the cookies. For my first visit, I'd say the wait and the hassle were worth experiencing at least once. Gideon's is definitely more than just a place to grab a cookie--it's an experience, and the atmosphere makes it memorable. I can definitely see why people make a stop at Gideon's part of their visit. The thai banana cookie from Summer House around the corner in Springs is not all it is cracked up to be either, but that one certainly is not 99% walnut by weight like this one. The cookies and cream Oreo slice was far better, which was mildly concerning that a cookie shoppe traditionally known for their "viral" cookies had failed so bad at cookies it was actually their CAKE that was the thing worth writing home about my experience. It is such a viral spot everyone is coming here for the experience to see a spot that a proper sickly Victorian-era child ghost could haunt. But smart customers get the cake, not the cookies. When you get the cake slice, verify that you have plastic cutlery and napkin before leaving the store, otherwise you are going to need to Kirby-inhale it. I asked one of the employees and they confirmed that whole bean coffee is only available online. I brewed this in a French press. The bag mentions notes of apple, caramel, and cinnamon. I could definitely smell it while drinking the coffee, especially the apple and cinnamon, but I didn't really taste them all that much in the actual coffee. However, it was very easy to drink. This was much lighter than the coffees I normally drink, with almost no bitterness. Nothing fancy, just a smooth cup of coffee that was enjoyable to drink black. One thing I wish Joffrey's offered was a way to try the coffees before committing to a bag. With so many different blends, it would be nice if they had sample jars of the grounds to smell, small tasting samples, or even brewed versions of the specialty blends available to order. Instead, they only had a limited selection of roasts and teas available for take out. A lot of the bags sound interesting, but you're mostly buying based on the description and hoping for the best. Overall, I enjoyed this one and would consider picking up another bag on a future Disney trip.
