Self help center floor #2 Maria is the best.
    Letrecia A.

Let me start off by saying, it's a great service called self help on the 2nd floor, but keep in mind you need patience to walk inside. There is a process, and you need an appointment still if you want help filling out your papers. We waited. And on our appointment date the lights were out. Two days later after our appointment was at 8am we were told, but doors opened at 8:30 and we were not seen till 10:45. I guess there bigger cases are people getting evicted. But they took them all at one time, then we were next. Our appointment was in close and personal, when I tell you this lady named Maria was an Angel sent from Lawyers heaven. She took care of our paper work for Capitol One and I believe my friend will be A okay. ( Personally Maria gets 10 STARS in my book) That Credit Card Company dragged him lol Karma is a Beast. Compton courthouse is just tore up from the floor up. If your seeking help throughout this building good luck with that. The staff sends you to the wrong floor and the wrong windows all the time. Prepare to stand in a long line and be treated like your a criminal walking inside the door. I felt like a piece of ruffled up cattle by the time we were finished with the check in process. Oh don't let me forget this was our 2nd trip here because the power was out in the courthouse. Smh all the money that flows through these doors and no back up generator. They have Shug Knights cases here really? I'm sure he is embarrassed. And I'm imbarrased to say I live right down the street. They need to tear this building down just like they tore Compton High down and start over. I bet Beverly hills, Hollywood, downy, Inglewood nor any other courthouses have Comptons problems.

I'm a lawyer and am only writing this based on 25+ years at this courthouse. My biggest complaint are the elevators. There are 6 elevators and it seems that 3-4 are always not working. When they are the arrow my indicate down, but it goes up. Because of the high numbers of persons working and visiting this courthouse the elevators can be very overcrowded. Courtrooms are large and comfortable. The clerk's office, on the other hand, is the last place one wants to be with long lines and terrible waits. Best to go there i the afternoon if one is able to do so. Nearby restaurants and fast food are plentiful. Not a bad courthouse but basically not visitor friendly.

Came here to visit a relative who works as a public defender for this courthouse. Honestly, growing up in LA, I think this was my first time driving through Compton and I was a bit scared. They have parking on the street but I opted for security and parked in the lot which is a flat rate of 6 bucks. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. Everyone was really nice and the line to enter the courthouse was a lot less hectic than the dtla courthouse (being that it is a smaller courthouse).

Two police…read moreofficers and a staff member gave me the wrong info and wrong directions to the assembly room. Making me late. Thanks yo. It's on the 4th floor. YOU'RE WELCOME. JUROR PARKING IS AT 101 Magnolia Ave. But no one tells you that. Not on the paperwork, not on the voice recording. You just have to figure that one out on your own while rushing to do your civil duty. Plus you better remember your license plate for parking. NO ONE TELLS YOU THAT EITHER. YOU'RE WELCOME. Lastly, you have to fill out the back of your jury duty paperwork. If not, they send you right to the back of the line. Time wasted - approximately 15 min. AGAIN YOU'RE WELCOME. OH AND DID I MENTION - someone hit my car too???? FML. JURY DUTY NIGHTMARE.

In for jury duty…read more Pros: Citizen paid for comfort better than most courhouses in the region (downey, compton, torrance), plenty of plugs in the jury waiting room and seating abound; a few tables if your trying to get work done while you serve your unpaid ($15 for 8 hours is not real pay) time there. Restrooms are clean, refrig, microwave available as well as speedy internet Judges are nice enough as are court staff, courtroom cops seem not so pleased to be doing the job though Cons: (antiquated structural issue with jury duty service) Having to drive beyond your living distance because as I was told they draw a straight line on a map and count mileage as a bird flies not what is actually within range of a courthouse. Judges DO NOT excuse for most reasons; no self employed people like us get to use the; i'm Loosing money while being as a reason (been to 2 jury service here several years and judges force you to attend). No consideration is given for your time and money lost while having to go there and deal with waiting for days to go through jury selection to either be forced onto a jury or rejected. *A simple at home phone questionaire or zoom video conference would solve this waste of peoples time for almost 20 people for multiple days but alas government doesn't function like a business must; in considering peoples time important. ProTips: 1. Parking structure (free but complicated to understand) for the jury, is on Pacific between Ocean and Broadway, when you park there, You MUST install the parking structure app on cell: needing phone/email/License plate number and a Credit Card entered even though you will get the parking for free after going into Jury service (they do not take cash in the structure). You'll need to scan the QR codes posted daily and then in the Jury room type your license number which is connected to only that parking structure for free parking; you'll get a notification Text saying the parking is paid. When you leave for the day; I believe camera's Read your license plate and the gate opens up automatically. 2. Bring a seat cousion, the seats in the jury room and in the hallways are wood and uncomfortable for sitting hours at a time 3. Most juries are called either by 9:30 am or after the lunch break which runs from 11:30am - 1:30pm. The entire building empties by 4:30pm 4. There are no TV's to mind numb your time while there to watch so you'll use your phone or bring a laptop/tablet to kill the day while you waste away.

Not once did they make me feel like I was asking too many questions or being difficult. They were patient, kind, and genuinely helpful when I was already mentally exhausted. Shout out to the employees in Room 100, where you file paperwork. They guided me step by step and made sure I understood what I needed to do instead of just pointing and rushing me along. That alone made a huge difference. Of course no one wants to be in court, but despite feeling overwhelmed, I was able to get everything done within three days, and that's saying a lot. Also, free parking, which honestly takes a huge layer of stress off right away. Not an experience anyone looks forward to, but the staff made it manageable and human. JURY SERVICE I hate…read morethis location, so I tried to switch my court venue for Jury Service. Unless you have to take more than three buses to get here or you have a medical excuse, forget it. On the plus side, there are fewer courtrooms here than Stanley Mosk, so you have a better chance of getting dismissed. Parking is right beneath the building. Show your jury summons, and you can park for free. There are plenty of spaces, but it is like a dungeon - dark! I found the elevator and took it to the first floor. Then, I had to get out, exit the building, and go through security. The line was short, and the process was quick. Then, I took an elevator to the 8th floor to the Jury Room. It's big and comfortable, but we aren't allowed to take photos of it. They way they handle juries is different than the last time I was here. We were told there are two groups - a morning panel and an afternoon panel. I was in the morning panel. Within 30 minutes, we were separated into two groups and sent to a department. Everything is done by number, probably to preserve anonymity, so the informative baliff had us line up in numerical order. I was number 2, so I thought I would be in and out of there promptly. Nope. Now, they interview everyone on the panel, which was about 38 people, before dismissing anyone. Once we took our assigned seats, the judge thanked us and gave us a rundown on how things were going to proceed. Then, she excused us for lunch. Unless you're a fast food junkie, pack yours! There is no cafeteria here, and the vending machines are pathetic. There was one food truck outside, and McDonald's and Subway were across the street on Washington Blvd. It's a food desert. When we returned at 1:30PM, we each had to stand up and answer a list of 11 heavy duty questions since it was a DUI case. It was fascinating and surprising to hear some of the answers. By the end of the day, everyone had responded, and we were instructed to return the next morning at 10:30AM. Beware: my courtroom, Department 75 is a meat locker, so bring a ski jacket! Plus, the air conditioner makes cringy inconsistent sounds that are annoying. The building itself is old and feels antiquated, but it gets the job done. The next day, once we were seated, the judge dismissed a number of people. I wasn't one of them. Then, the defense attorney spoke to us. She asked us all a few specific questions, and we had to respond by raising our hand, or not. Then, she asked certain people about their responses. Next, the prosecutor described his method. He, too, asked the group questions, which we replied by raising our hands, or not. Then, he asked particular people things. When that was over, the prosecutor dismissed one person. Then the defense attorney dismissed me. I had to return to the 8th floor to pick up that all-important piece of paper proving I had served for two days. All in all, employees at this courthouse were kind and helpful. Thankfully, everyone tries to make this experience as efficient as possible. Civic duty done!

But it isn't the courthouse's fault! As far as courthouses go, this one is decent, even though it is getting a bit old and isn't in the best area of the city. There is ample parking in the area, and it is much cheaper than the other downtown courthouse (Stanley Mosk). The interior is clean and isn't really falling apart (yet), though it was clearly built in the 1970s or 1980s. Security to get in is typically quite efficient. Also, make sure to check the location of your courtroom - just because it says Department 65, does not mean it is on the sixth floor! That particular department is on the third floor by the way. As far as courthouses go, this place could be much worse. Four stars easily.

This has been one of the worst court-service experiences I have ever had. As a self-represented litigant dealing with serious homeowner safety issues, I felt unheard, dismissed, and trapped in a process that did not provide meaningful access to justice. I filed a civil case after paying Villa Bella Construction / Kip Connors approximately $103,000 for an ADU project that, in my experience, was left incomplete, unsafe, and damaged. My case involves serious construction issues, including unsafe electrical conditions, water intrusion, loss of use, and substantial mitigation costs. I had to pay more than $60,000 out of pocket to mitigate and repair dangerous conditions. My court filings also explain that I paid the contractor more than $100,000, the ADU remained incomplete and unusable, and my family was living with unsafe electrical conditions. What has been most frustrating is that my case was stayed for arbitration even though arbitration became financially inaccessible to me. I attempted to proceed in arbitration, but the required fees created a major barrier. Instead of being allowed to move forward in court, I was left stuck without a real merits forum -- not meaningfully in arbitration and not meaningfully in court. From my perspective, that is not justice. That is a procedural trap. This was not a simple private disagreement. The safety and regulatory facts were serious. CSLB investigated the contractor and, based on my understanding, referred the matter to the Attorney General's Office for disciplinary action / possible license revocation. OSHA and LADBS issues were also part of the broader record. In my view, this was a homeowner safety and accountability case involving alleged defective work, unsafe conditions, and major financial harm. I was also very disturbed by how the court treated the safety concerns connected to the contractor dispute. After I sued, there was a gun-threat issue involving the contractor, and I obtained a restraining order. In court, I felt the seriousness of that threat was minimized. My understanding of Judge Cochran's comment was essentially that people can get angry when they are sued. As a homeowner and mother already dealing with unsafe construction conditions, that was shocking to me and made me feel completely unprotected. The court process itself was also extremely frustrating. In my personal experience, some staff interactions felt rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. Getting basic procedural help or clear information as a self-represented person was far more difficult than it should be. On top of that, I was told the court reporter transcript could take approximately 5-6 weeks. In 2026, waiting more than a month for a transcript when a litigant is trying to seek writ review or protect their rights is unacceptable. If the system cannot provide timely transcripts, then the court needs serious modernization. At minimum, technology and AI-assisted transcription should be explored because the current process is painfully slow and outdated. I understand courts are busy and judges have difficult calendars. But from my experience, Department 16 did not adequately recognize the real-life impact of keeping a homeowner trapped in a stayed case where arbitration was financially inaccessible. The practical result felt extremely unfair: the contractor could avoid the civil case moving forward, while I remained responsible for emergency repairs, loss of use, and the cost of making my property safe. My honest experience with Stanley Mosk Courthouse and Department 16 left me feeling unheard, unprotected, and without meaningful access to justice. A self-represented homeowner should not be left in limbo for months when there are documented safety issues, major financial damages, a restraining-order issue, and an arbitration forum that closed because the fees were not affordable. Based on my personal experience, this court process felt cold, slow, dismissive, and deeply unfair to a self-represented homeowner trying to protect her family and property.
