Prices are high for donated things. But occasionally there is a find that makes it worth the time spent there.

I've given this store TONS of business over the past few years & used to love it & always spoke very highly of it. But the last couple of times I've shopped at CTS, the cashiers randomly picked items that they decided "weren't priced right" and refused to sell them, telling me they would be repriced (i.e.higher) the next day & that I could come back for them. What?!?! The first time, it was a large bowl that the cashier said someone had changed tags on & she went in to tell me they've been having"issues" with that lately...she even unsuccessfully tried to peel one tag off the other. I really question whether such an "issue" exists...I mean, I understand tag switching can be an issue in retail, but who randomly switches tags and then leaves the items on the shelves for other people to buy?! My guess is that whoever tags their items made some sort of mistake and placed a 2nd tag directly over the first...I couldn't even tell there were two tags when I put the bowl in my cart. Funny enough, when I returned the next day AT OPENING, the bowl miraculously was no longer in the store. Hmmmmm! The other was tonight when I brought up several items including a sewing kit/box that was priced at $5.95. She rang up everything else in my order, and then when she got to the sewing kit, she looked it over with great interest then said it was priced too low & refused to sell it! Given that their pricing structure is usually 25% of what you'd expect to pay retail, and a new sewing box of this type on Amazon is $20, the ticketed price was right in line, but NOPE...clerk-lady said it would be repriced the next day and that I could come back for it. Ummm yeah right...wanna bet she is going to take it home for herself?! Priced are insane, they wanted $179 for a old used rust Walmart girls bike, I looked it up and the same 2023 model of the bike brand new at Walmart.com for $89. Just think about how insane that is. I love to go thrifting but I go to this one as a last resort if I don't find something at the other two on the same street. First off the prices are expensive. You might as well just go to a regular store at that point and get clothes that are in better condition in the first place. The do have weekly sales on the tag but surprise surprise you can barely find any clothing that have that tag. It kind of needs a remodel it always looks so dingy and feels hot in there. I like the fact that have a fitting room. They don't do refunds or exchanges so make sure you are getting what you actually want. There are no exceptions to the rule. Try all appliances/toys before you buy them also. read more

First I want to start by saying that I do appreciate this store and everything it has to offer, however... I come here almost once a week and I also donate a TON of things, I also spend a fair amount on clothes and household items. I don't have childcare yet so my little one is usually in tow. It can get pretty stressful as he is rambunctious little boy (4) however, I try to always make sure he doesn't touch anything outside of the toy area, and yes, we've had our share of corrections.. This is what makes me upset. There were multiple other little boys playing in the toy area where I was in the exercise clothing area (within eyes reach) - they were all running around being little boys, happy as clams. I was approached by a woman that told me I need to keep my son by me (and pointed inside the cart) Mind you, she never told any other person to keep their children close, only mine. And when I tried to respond, she cut me off with a rude hand gesture and stormed away, while the rest of the boys continued to run around and mine was now in the cart. I then had several other frequent guests who know my son and I come up to me and tell me how unfair that was, as my son wasn't the only one playing around a little too rough. How is this fair? Why single out my child? I have a $10 rewards (as I always do) and I'm afraid this will be my last trip, I'm very saddened because everything I have that's gently used I would bring here, all my brand name stuff, but I don't want them making money while they totally crap on their regular customers, I'm not the first to have this complaint and I surely won't be the last. This store is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! I came here today for the first and LAST time! I wanted very badly to purchase a small book and the VERY RUDE cashier ("Karen" supposedly) refused to sell it to me because it didn't have a price tag, refused to hold it for me, and refused to allow me to speak to a manager or supervisor about it! She had a REAL attitude problem, and I totally got the feeling that her response would have been different if I was a different ethnicity! This store is racist and has unfair policies! Their prices are WAY OVERPRICED! I want to find out what charities they are getting their donations from so I can write to them all and tell them to STOP DONATING because their goods are being used for EVIL and not good! OK. It's a for-profit thrift store. This is a problem for a couple of reasons. One, things are WAY over-priced. $329 for a scratched and beat to hell cherry dresser? It's going to cost you at least that to get it back into any serviceable condition! $7 for a polyester scarf. $30 for a dirty Banana Republic fabric purse. And speaking of Banana Republic, or Ann Taylor, or J.Crew. I noticed there was an unusual abundance of name brand items here with the tags still on. Now I am wondering why people in the area would buy these things, decide they didn't want them, and instead of returning them to the store, they donate them here. Not to be judgmental, but this area isn't exactly Glencoe. You can take that as you will. Also odd - china and glassware is only sold as a set, but it's not boxed or packaged up in any way - it's just scattered loosely on the shelves. And god help you if it's marked as a "32 piece set" and you can only find 31 pieces. No sale! Oh and the artwork here is the most bizarre and demented selection I have ever seen in my entire life. Giant, undulating paper flowers mounted on a wire frame. Insane oil paintings in garish colours. And of course, a horrible grinning clown (of course). There was an amateur abstract of a stick of butter on a plate that fascinated me, if I go back I may have to get it just because it was so weird. The only problem is all of these items mentioned were in the $15-$45 range. I did find a woven belt for $3 and a vintage necklace for $2, but that was after quite a bit of searching. Just know you probably won't find amazing treasures if you make a trip here. read more

If you enjoy a fantasy land where thrift store items are priced at retail store prices you will love this place. If you also enjoy the numbers 14.41 in a consistent pricing element you will also love this place. If you enjoy paying 7 dollars for a crappy sweatshirt, again, you will love this place. If you enjoy finding somewhat designer merchandise this is the place for you. You will, however, pay dearly for it. Most of the shoes are priced at $14.41. Some are priced much much higher. Some shoes from Target are priced at around $7 but that is so close to the retail price you might cringe at paying it for a pair of crappy shoes from Target. Now, for the good part. My shopping companion found 3 pairs of basically never been worn Men's shoes for, wait for it, $14.41 a piece. Total $48 bucks for 3 pairs of shoes, not really all that bad. But, not thrift store prices. I found a lovely Borsalino fedora hat that I will cherish...probably forever. And, a gorgeous pair of 1970's Mrs. Roper sunglasses that will be incorporated into my ever growing sunglasses collection ($4). I also got a necklace made from real marbles that is really stunning for $1.61. There are some bargains to be had but mostly overpriced crap. I like the pieces I bought, just wish they were more motivated to sell merchandise and not price gouge. read more

I'm so disappointed. I used to LOVE this place and I've noticed that in the last few weeks, their prices have skyrocketed! I'll say it again (because I'm sure you have already read the other posts about this place); VERY overpriced. It's a thrift store laid out like a thrift store and as unorganized and dirty as a thrift store, but with antique store prices. Seriously, here are a few examples: Old wooden storage cabintet (I'll admit, it was pretty cool): $549.00 4 pink 1990's style drinking glasses still in ripped packaging: $20.00 "Dollar Store" figurines: $5.00-$10.00 Medium Wall Mirror (o.k. frame, approx. 18" x 24"): $40.00 Really ugly 1990's laquered dresser with gold trim: I can't remember, but it was A LOT and I about died laughing when I saw the tag. Anyway, if you live more than 20-25 minutes away, don't waste your gas money unless money is no object. You could buy this stuff new for less. One last thing: I keep giving this place just ONE more shot and everytime it is a letdown. Today I stopped in and as I walked around I heard 3 different shoppers make comments to their friends and/or other shoppers about how overpriced the everything is. A for-profit thrift store, apparently. Not the friendliest place to shop. A lot of very over-priced items. They are really into "rules", like "don't open this game to see if all the pieces are in it; if you do we won't sell it to you." They only take credit cards if you spend 35 dollars or more. However: I've found so much good stuff here that I make a point to visit every time I come up to the Waukegan/Gurnee area. A great selection of clothes, records, books, kitchen gadgets, and art, much better than the crappy Salvation Army across the road. Just tonight I found a huge black velvet Jesus painting. It was almost ten dollars and I debated for several minutes if I wanted to spend the rest of my cash on this item and skip the skillet and books. I decided to put it back, but took a photo of it with my camera. A lot of the art doesn't move very quickly and I expected to see it the next time I return. As I was leaving the parking lot, though, I saw two young guys happily placing their velvet messiah into the trunk of their small sedan. Although I was sad to see it go away from me, I was happy for the boys. They had big smiles on their faces that said "Oh my God this primitive kitsch will look sooo amazing in our hallway!" They will enjoy it much more than I ever could. read more

Where unorganized and damaged goods are deemed "vintage & desired." I used to love this place when I was in high school and could grab some cool old tee-ball shirts, but now it's just an unorganized, over priced pit. If you want to take the time to search through everything I am sure you could find bargains, but from it's looks who'd want to? I go here from time to time to look for "rustic" props for food photography, but even the kitchen items are expensive for a thrift store. Prices are odd, as if someone's entire existence is pricing things and suddenly they're bored with the $4.95 / $2.99's of the the world. $4.12, $1.21... come one get it together. Yes, some things are overpriced. However I have seen overpriced things at any thrift store. If you're a bargain hunter you will find your bargain. I have found many good deals here over the years, as has my mother-in-law. My wife loves books and always finds gems for a cheap price. Also we got her a gorgeous dress for about ten bucks. Found a double stroller for $30 in great condition, also a really nice rocking chair for $20, the one I'm sitting in now actually. :) Also found some old CDs that worked fine, and many outfits for me at good prices. A nice belt for my wife for around $3, many new baby clothes and jackets for very cheap...most of them from Carter's and I've seen how much those run for at the actual store. So I can say I'm pretty satisfied with this place. They have a dressing room, and also a vending and soda machine which is nice if you spend a while looking through everything and need a snack. If you go here don't expect to just have a bargain jump out at you. Dig through everything and you'll be satisfied too! read more

While their pricing has always been a little on the high side, they DO have enough 1/2 price colored tickets (more than one, unlike other thrifts I frequent) There were two things on my last trip there that really got me upset. First, since the price of silver must be in a good place, there were pickers, who were with their GARBAGE CANS (not sure if they were given to them by the store or they brought them in. I was there right when they opened and didn't see anyone with one in their hands, so I have to think they were provided one) and they were going through the aisles as if they were in a race (probably to beat out each other). They were actually throwing their items into their cans. This could not have been louder. Every few seconds I was hearing the extremely loud clanging of metal while I was trying to shop. Since there was more than one of them, I couldn't get away from it. Secondly, I had an expensive (I believe it was a Coach) purse to purchase, that needed to have the theft devise removed. Well, it never got into my bags and since I had quite a bit, I never noticed it until it was too late. Thankfully, I wasn't charged for it, either, but that made me upset. I was thinking since I complained to the cashier about the metal clangers, she was trying to get back at me. read more

I love this place. I feel like I've been shopping in a different store than these other negative review folks! They have a ton of stock that turns over pretty fast. I have bought some amazing things here - a new velvet blazer, $17, easily would cost $125 new. Wrangler jeans, new, $8. And in my massive waist size. I've bought shoes, jackets ... some weird funky stuff, some basic stuff, and never been disappointed. Plus they do run sales. For example, some day they might put all clothing (ALL CLOTHING) at 20% off. The prices are not high here ... I find them to be low. And if you give them your mobile they do text you their upcoming deals every few days. Highly recommend them! read more

This store is a complete disaster - it's filthy. Books are strewn all over the floor, and the toy department? they are literally scattered throughout the store, and the owners (and parents I supposed) let their very young children run wild there and allow them to "play" with all the toys while the parents are shopping throughout the store. I used to regularly pop in here, mostly because Waukegan and Gurnee are too pathetic to support a real bookstore and I could often find book club selections in the used book section. I would often buy toys for my kids as well. (Prices are about half below retail on many items, but sometimes you can score, for those who are wondering. Those occasional finds kept me coming back for more.) Had a very unpleasant situation today. My son tried on a Halloween costume and in the dressing room, the mask, which was in a bag stapled onto the shirt, fell off. At the register, the cashier refused to sell it even though it was clearly a set. I know they can be very picky about tags being attached. If the lady had said, "I am sorry, it's not that I don't believe you but as per our rules we must take it back and re attach everything" i would not be offended. But instead she said something in spanish to her co-worker and said, "NO it wasn't stapled on! " Pretty much she called me a liar. Ironic because once when my 3 year old grabbed a toy for .88 and I discovered it in his hands when we got home I obsessed about remembering to tell them on my next visit to please add it to my bill so we wouldn't be guilty of theft. If we are going to be paying near retail anyway I think we'll be better served by Target, and I'll buy my books from amazon from now on. Done with this place! read more

I think this place is okay. First off, it's over-priced. The people are definitely not that friendly. They stared at me for the longest time when I walked in, and when I walked out. I did not buy anything from there. I'd rather spend my money in either Goodwill or the Salvation Army. At least I know my money is going towards a good cause. read more

On the plus side, a good variety of items. Maybe not the best prices for a resale store but still better than buying new. On the down side, the store is not very clean and is usually disorganized. Also, there are a number of rules to follow (what not to touch, how pricing works for an item without a price...), spy cameras all around the store and the employee are not paid to be friendly. read more

Community Thrift is a must stop every time I drive down Grand Ave, If I can find a parking spot! the lot wraps around the building and still I'm lucky if a spot is available. The art selection is better than anywhere and the clothing selection is huge, A great place to find a decent sweat shirt for working outdoors or on the car. Once in a while they take in big lots of sporting goods like skis or tennis rackets so its worth the parking effort. there is a high end sectioned off area by the checkout that has stereos and things that moron parents would let their delinquent offspring destroy before it would ever have a chance to find a home, you can find decent speakers or a drum set, so always swing buy this high security glassed off room before you run out. read more

Still the same and even worse than when I was 5. Especially in these Co-vid times, a clean environment is required---that is obviously not a priority here. EVERYTHING is dusty-do they ever sweep/mop? I brought my husband for the first time and told him I came here as a child, he was so disgusted--he commented on the extremely dirty rugs and I realized it's the same 202+year old rugs. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's 2020. If you're not going to remodel, just CLEAN! and the service? I didn't see the same ladies who did and some do still work there from like 20 years ago, but it's still the same nasty attitudes. Honestly, they ALWAYS act like they're the owners, and even though the prices are high, they act like you're getting things for free. I have NEVER felt valued here. But, since it's in my community and my mom and grandmother used to come here, I did too. The thrift store is way overpriced. There are alot of nice items however. They had brand new Gymboree clothes there with the tags on and want them each like for 8, 10, 12 bucks EACH... come on now... who are they kidding... this stuff doesn't REALLY GO to cancer patients. I want to find out who is the owner of this store because whoever it is.....is MEGA RICH. There are people there at all hours of the day and it is jam packed with cars no matter what day OR WHAT TIME!!! Then the good stuff they always have to put behind the glass case and write it up a bunch more...like the dolls or bitty babies or American Girl Dolls... Then the lady with the dark yellow blond hair is always bitching at the Spanish people's kids who are running around either by the carts or messing up all the toys in the back. The old folks get a percentage off on Wednesdays so you damn well better bring your mom there to help you out. They never have any sales going on either, only mark downs on the stuff that hasn't sold in the past weeks. God forbid you're fat because you will never make it with your cart going past another person in the aisles. Also if they give you too much money back at the cash register, be ready to have them attack you outside in the parking lot after you turn the horseshoe in back and go to the front, they have a camera looking down on the transaction (of course all stores would, who wouldn't) but it's like they must get whipped in back for messing up with the money because they are begging you to please give them the money back for their mistake. God knows you overspent 500 dollars in one year shopping there so they would have already made it up by now... But actually I love looking at this store. I went shopping here since I was in high school going to college and couldn't afford new brand name clothing. One time I was real lucky and bought a cute old doll that was a "Baby Two Dear Eloise Wilkin Doll". There's a bunch of Webkinz here too that aren't too expensive. There's also a bunch of mean people shopping. One time I went with my 6 year old daughter and she like hurriedly ran in front of a 50 yr old man and he mouthed the words, "Ran right in front of me"...as if it bothered him SO MUCH to have to PAUSE a half second. Sometimes when you shop and you want to go down an aisle of clothes for girls the people won't move, they think they own that aisle. They have nice Easton brand baseball bats for 4 bucks. You can buy a nice bicycle there but you are going to pay like 50 bucks or more for it. That old Jewish owner has to be rich enough right now why can't he have half price days for EVERYONE or 49 cent days like the Salvation Army does... I mean like 2 times a year even would be nice. Come on the economy has gone down and you just keep on getting RICHER AND RICHER. Give something back to the people for once. I like that they are open on Sundays though when all the rest are closed. Watch out for B Thrifty that opened up down the street they are going to take over I bet. Although they don't have many of the name brand clothing; I'm sure they'll catch on soon enough.... They are going to be having Halloween Costumes soon you can pick up a new costume there, but it will be that famous amount, "$14.41".........And you can't haggle over prices which does suck. I mean they have some nice stuff out but sometimes they will have like major defects, like a hole, or dirt, or something is broken on it and they still want a bunch of money for it. I bet this owner is a billionaire. I bet he lives in Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Arizona and Florida. I have shopped at this thrift store for many years. I have, however, come to this store much less frequently the last couple of years. The prices ARE out of control. Heavily tarnished silverplated trays--$20 or more? I stopped in yesterday (5/19/2018) and the shelves in the dish/Knick knack areas were so full you were knocking items down trying to reach for the item you wanted. They need to lower the prices to clear out some inventory. I'm happy to pay a fair amount for something I want but these prices are nuts! I'm going to date myself here, but about 20 years ago, when I was in high school, this was my go-to place for pretty much my whole wardrobe. The prices were great and the selection was even better and almost every time I left, I was carrying a big bag of clothes and odds and ends (almost all name brand) for around $20. So imagine my surprise when the last two times I've been there after a several-year absence, that the prices have increased soooo much that I actually asked myself, "What the heck is going on here?" First off, we all know this is a for-profit thirft store. Fine, no problem. But then why do they have that Children's Cancer truck parked out front accepting donations? I am assuming enough people questioned and/or complained about it because this visit I noticed a sign on their front door stating something along the lines that they are not associated with any charity. I totally get that they are a for-profit store but I think it is tacky to have the Children's Cancer truck out front. Second, the prices now are insane for a thrift store. I must have looked at 20 sweaters before I found one priced under $10 (and yes, it was $9.91 or something ridiculous like that). Like another reviewer wrote, there is an unusual abundance of name brand items with tags still on, which, in all my years of "junking" is odd to see that much of. Frankly, it's strange. Where is this stuff coming from? But back to the pricing. I can find no rhyme or reason to any of it. At least with Goodwill/Salvation Army you will find consistency. Oh, and those new items with tags? I don't think I'm exaggerating by saying that most of those items you could buy cheaper in the store if you hit a sale. Third, the housewares/domestics section is a joke. Again, the prices are seriously off mark. I am surprised they sell anything out of those sections because most of it looks like what I would put in my "FREE" box if I was having a yard sale. Hey, wait....maybe some of it WAS from my FREE box last year?! And lastly, I get that not every thrift store is going to be as well laid out as Goodwill. (I'm using them as an example because like Goodwill or not, their stores are clean, usually smell good, and most of the clothing is not only organized by size and type of item but also by color). This is not the cleanest thrift store you'll ever go into but if you can stand the smell and the crowds, it's worth it. They are a bit overpriced but have a very good selection of clothing and furniture items. Staff is pleasant to regulars but not so friendly to random folks. Be prepared to spend awhile searching the racks as sizes are all intermingled with each other.......except for in the Children's section which seems to be somewhat organized. read more

I do shop here and find some good deals if it's stuff I really will use but for thrift stuff it is very high priced. What I find a bit offensive about this store is that it is a FOR PROFIT store that parks a Childrens Cancer Federation donation truck in front so that people are misled into thinking that their donations and dollars spent are going for kids cancer research and donations. NO PART of your donations goes to kids cancer.....it goes into the pocket of the store owner. They even have the whole back parking lot filled with trucks that say Children's Cancer Federation. But as you walk into the store, right on the door it states that this store is not affiliated with any charitable organization!!!!! I think this should be illegal and probably is!! read more

This place is great if you want to pay $20 for a used Banana Republic blazer from 7 years ago. Go to the Pleasant Prairie outlets and get one from this season. This store is just way too expensive for a thrift store. But it was packed with people, which I totally do not understand. the prices on electronics seemed to be decent, at least for some stuff. The dishes are priced by set, which is ok if the set makes sense. But they had a set with ten small plates, ten saucers, 4 big mugs, a bowl, a platter, and a butter dish. What do you do with that? I wanted some of the items from the set but who on earth wants ten saucers and no cups? This is the place you have to frequent, you have to know what you're after, and you may have to dig. I furnished my 3 seasons porch, bought a BEAUTIFUL sideboard, living room chairs, drinking glasses, etc. but it took a long time to find the right thing at the right price. If you come once you may leave disappointed. Come back the next week and the whole store will be different, including prices - so what? They're for-profit. If you want cheap prices (smelly and dirty, too) go to Salv Army across the street. I LOVE this place!! read more
