We paid off one mortgage during this time and the bulk of another one. I believed the conventional wisdom that a personal relationship with local bankers would be helpful to our long term financial goals. We recently tried to roll over my wife's retirement assets to a different vehicle, with input from our financial advisor, accountant, benefit plan administrators and IRA custodian. A business checking account was required with some parameters specific to the nature of the transaction. All requested documents were provided, including those prepared by an attorney and signed off by the institutional custodian's compliance department. Clinton branch manager Lori Alderwick (NMLS 997422) had no clue what we were trying to accomplish and treated my wife like a criminal, instead of as someone who has consulted with multiple experts and followed all of the transactional rules. Lori refused to contact any of the more knowledgeable fiduciaries we referred her to (to their shock), and after weeks left us a voicemail stating she was refusing to open the required account. A lazy, zero class move from a bush league, zero class outfit. I personally closed out the rest of our preexisting business with NBT within the hour. Fortunately, we found another bank that was more than willing to work with us. NBT is where to go if you feel the need to be cheated on a HELOC or something. It's not a serious bank for serious people. If the sizable business I offered was rebuffed by these local yokels, it's likely yours will be too. Stay far away, and if you're already a customer run - don't walk - while you can.

The employees are all friendly and management is responsive to issues and suggestions. The reason for the one star deduction is simply lack of a solid online banking portal. The web interface is clunky and outdated compared to AmeriCU's new & updated interface. That said, I have spoken with the online team at First Source and they are working on an update to roll out later this year. They were very receptive to my input, so this review will be updated once they rollout their new system. I would like to see a few additions such as the 24 hour full kiosks, member access to Coin Star style machines and possibly more branch locations (although their ATM network is far larger than AmeriCU). Overall, I can highly recommend the Rome branch that I did business with and particularly Mr. Russ Hayes who is an asset to the institution.

I've been a member of Americu Credit Union for some years now and I've never had a problem with…read morethem. Their rates are unbeatable, even for a 22 year old like me. No fee checking accounts and conservative rates for savings accounts are the norm. Friendly and helpful tellers and advisors are always available to assist if they can. The biggest thing Americu has going for it, in my opinion, is their vast network of ATMs sprinkled throughout the area. All Oneida Indian Nation owned SavOns have Americu ATMs in them, and the same goes for Nice N' Easy gas stations. And another huge benefit is their ATMs located at the branch itself. This particular branch has ATMs where you can withdrawl 5 dollar increments, you can deposit checks into your account, and you can also deposit cash into your account. All through the ATM.

It's a good thing, because every time I need human intervention, I always walk away less than satisfied. I've been a member of the credit union for over 30 years, but it is not my primary bank because customer service is NOT their strength. Convenience and cost are definite pluses, but really, the service everywhere else I bank is so much better.
