My experience at community could have been better. I brought in a bridesmaids dress to be altered: the hemline needed to taken up and the straps on the dress needed to be shortened. They promised a two week turnaround. Two weeks later, I went to pick up the dress and they could not find it. After about 15 minutes of searching, they told me they "found it on the floor" and that it had fallen off of the rack. I don't know how long it was on the floor, but no alterations had been done and it had not been touched in two weeks. To be clear, the dress was still in the protective covering that I had brought it in. I was told the original seamstress who I had the initial fitting with had been sick for about 2 weeks and they would have to call someone else in to get it done. I needed the dress that day as I had been promised a two week turnaround, so they said I could come back in a few hours (I had originally come to pick up the dress around 2 and they said I could come back around 5). I brought my husband when I came back at 5 and tried on the dress. The straps were altered and the top of the dress now fit me great, but the hemline was now had a two inch "line" around the bottom where they rolled up the hem and sewed it. The dress is a thick material and the excess fabric needed to be cut in order to avoid a bulky "line" that is now there. I asked the seamstress if there is anyway she could take out the "line" and she said she could not because there is "boning in the hem". To be clear, there is never boning in a hemline. Also, when I was standing there in the light, my husband noticed a stain on the side of the dress. When he mentioned it, the seamstress said that they had noticed the stain and tried to treat it, but they "had no idea where it came from". I said I had an idea where it came from given it was found on the floor. They were not going to mention the stain had my husband not seen it or mentioned it. The seamstress told me I could take it to get it dry cleaned and see if they could get it out, but there was no offer to pay for this and it would now be an added expense to the already $150 I paid for the alterations. To their credit, Community did reimburse me 50% of the original cost. I brought the dress to my mother who has been sewing for years and she found a safety pen sewed into the hemline of the dress. I am disappointed with my experience and I wish I could write something more positive- but given the fact that the dress was not touched for 2 weeks, it was found on the floor, it now has a stain on it and the hemline is subpar workmanship, I can only give my experience a 2 star. Accidents happen, but the lack of clear communication did not remedy the experience once the accident occurred. read more

This is an interesting shop with a new concept. The process of re-designing existing garments is fascinating, and a super-creative way of recycling. Their designs are beautiful, too. Really cool fabrics, and beautiful work, though some are pretty pricey. My favorite purchase so far is two beautifully re-worked vintage ties I bought for my husband. I have also had several garments altered, and was pleased with the service and the result. My only issue is that the kinds of alterations available are rather limited. In a shop dedicated to re-design, this surprised me. However, I will certainly continue to go there. They do the quickest and most reasonably priced alterations in town, they do good work, and it is always fun to see what is new on the racks. read more

This is a super cute shop located upstairs! You have to use a stairway to get into the shop, but it made me love it even more. It felt like you were going to a secret hideaway. When we went into the shop itself, it was neat, organized, and overall had a great vibe to it. I found a dress from White House Black Market for only $10! Although I didn't find anything vintage that I liked, they definitely have a good selection with a large price range as well. You can find things from $25 - $100+. Definitely worth the stop. read more

I have had Shawna do some alterations on my clothes in the past, and right now she is revamping/updating the late 1970s wedding dress my dear aunt gave to me. I'm so pleased with the results so far and am grateful to Shawna for her tailoring skills and Sanni for her keen eye and ideas for the redesign. Community is worth the trek up the stairs into the unknown. I found one of my favorite dresses of all time here, a wonderful olive shirt-dress that makes me look like I stepped out of 1945. Unlike the typical thrift-store experience, they provide a minimalist 'boutique' style atmosphere, which means that you don't have to sift through racks of clothes, but it's not always the best place to go if you're looking for That Particular Dress. Not that it matters - Community is designed as a great place to wander in after some coffee to browse around, and the staff has always been super friendly and helpful. And, like I said, when you do find something, it's totally glorious and there's a heavenly light and you feel like the dress was made JUST for you. It's pretty swell. Also, like the other reviewer said, they have much more than clothes, including jewelry, accessories, miscellaneous art, prints, and I once found an Instamatic I regret not buying. It's worth noting that they also do alterations here. Whether it's the youthfulness of the place or the sheer visibility of the sewing machine, as a twentysomething who's a bit put off by generic strip-mall alterations shops, I would feel very comfortable bringing clothes to be altered here. Overall, of the Athens vintage clothing stores (of which there are quite a few), Community tends to provide a good combination of "authentically vintage" yet still practical, wearable attire. read more

I'm torn between 3 stars and 4 stars for this place! There were things I really loved about Community - the set up of the shop, the items on display, the presentation. All of that was top notch. But when we went in, even though there were only two other people in the store, one of whom I presume was the owner or someone on staff, we were basically ignored. The customer service was practically nonexistent. I read on some of the other reviews that they do fashion shows, classes, makeovers and such - that would have been great to know! But no one told us. We were left to wander and left with nothing in hand. But we thought it was a really cool store and a really cool concept. read more

Community is an adorable shop tucked in downtown Athens. It really captures the heart of the the town by selling beautiful clothing and focusing on sustainable fashion. The ladies here have incredible taste and are a pleasure to chat with. If you are visiting Athens please take the time to visit this unique downtown business and buy some of their local and handmade items. You will not be disappointed! Also: If you live in Athens and like to craft you should consider taking a class at Community! The classes are fun and the instructors are extremely knowledgeable. It's a great way to pursue a passion and make new friends. I took a pattern sewing class at Community a few years ago to brush up on my skills and now I sew almost every single day! I just got a dress altered here and couldn't have better things to say! Becky, the seamstress was very helpful and made me feel at ease about leaving my dress in her hands! The alteration was done impeccably and in about two hours. It was so nice to be able to pick up my dress the very same day.
