I should have written this review at least a year ago. I moved from Virginia to Maryland in mid-2014 and had to leave behind a top notch pilates studio in McLean (Pengu) I was surprised to find it difficult to locate a new studio of the same caliber within a reasonable driving distance. I tried a couple of places and ended up using one near Shady Grove Hospital that was just okay. Okay because I already had experience and could do some corrections by myself. Not great. I tried a studio in Kentlands that was great, but it closed shortly after my first class. So I looked northward to Germantown and found CoMMotion. I had found my studio at last. The pilates studio only has 4 Reformers, so there is a lot of opportunity for personal attention from the instructors. If classes are smaller than 4, the instructor usually takes advantage of the tower and the Cadillac machines. The drive from Gaithersburg is about 5 minutes against traffic. I usually take classes with Bonnie, the owner of the dance studio co-located with the pilates studio. Because she is a dancer, she is alert to the minutiae that make a big difference in the changes pilates can make to your body. read more

We couldn't be happier with our experience at CoMMotion! Our daughter is now in her third year and has grown tremendously as both a dancer and a person. She's had the opportunity to take multiple styles of dance and is now part of the company program, which has been a fantastic experience. The instructors and owner are incredibly talented, compassionate, and kind--they truly care about every dancer. The studio fosters a supportive and inspiring environment, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for a place to nurture their own or their children's love of dance. read more

Review for parents night out: it was very well staffed and the little dog walking around was cute. There were 2 age groups to sign up for 4-7 and 8-11. The two groups were not split during the night for the dance instruction or activities. For pizza it was not planned to give each kid 2 slices, come on its dominoes pizza give the kids 2 slices. Each kid received 1 slice and then my daughter asked for a second where they responded were not sure everybody can get a second slice. To fix this, the pizza was cut into smaller slices. The movie choice of Leap was great. The popcorn was great. A bit more division by age, skill, and plan to give each kid at least 2 slices of dominoes pizza. read more

I have done MANY things at CoMMotion, and this review is very much overdue. From my own experience: This is a fun and friendly place to do fitness classes. I love the zumba and the pilates. They are done with a great spirit and accommodate people of all fitness levels. If you are looking for any kind of fitness class, you should drop on by. From the perspective of a mom: My 9 year-old daughter recently finished up 2 "semesters" worth of ballet classes here. Now let me say that from her perspective she had a great time. She loved her teacher, and she loved dancing. SHE was very much looking forward to the end-of-the-year Showcase. I, however, was not. I was sure that my sweet little girl could never have paid attention long enough to learn the dance. I was sure that she would be the one who was dancing to her own tune, doing her own thing. So as I sat at the Showcase, I sat slumped back in my chair, with a small lump of anxiety in my throat. And then my little girl took the stage. And there she was. Dancing in time with the music. Dancing in the front row. With all the rest of her class. Being a DANCER! Looking so beautiful and amazing that I cried. Literally, I cried. All the way through the performance. Because the wonderful teachers at CoMMotion were able to teach my sweet girl with no attention span to be a dancer. This studio has the best fitness classes during the day for adults! TRX suspension workout is an amazing half hour that works your whole body to make you look and feel great! Follow that class with a zumba, pilates or a hypergravity workout and you will be smiling all week long! read more

Commotion Pilates is my happy place! I've never looked forward to exercising this much before. I started out with a Pilates 10-Pack, and I became addicted so much so that I'm currently on the Unlimited Class Pass! I've seen major differences in my belly, legs and arms in such a short amount of time. My flexibility has improved too! This is all thanks to the instructors at Commotion. In Pilates, form matters! A slight placement or movement adjustment makes a huge difference. With such small class sizes, the instructors really focus on you - making sure you are getting the most out of every minute. While I don't have any injuries, I've seen how well they work with others making sure they are comfortable and safe. I've loved getting to know the instructors and other participants. It's a wonderful community that makes you feel good about yourself, holds you accountable and challenges you at the same time. Thank you Bonnie for creating such an amazing space! read more

When I moved to Maryland last year, I was relieved to find a fitness studio with Pilates and yoga classes so close to my apartment in Germantown. After having attended classes consistently at Commotion for the last year, I have got to say that I am impressed. Bonnie, Dawn, and all of the instructors are ALWAYS friendly and energetic (seriously, I don't know how they have so much positive energy whether it's 8 a.m. or 8 p.m.) which keeps me motivated to keep coming to class even when I would normally be tired and just want to sit on the couch. They all are also HIGHLY knowledgable (I teach Anatomy and Physiology at the college level and can say without a doubt that these ladies and gentlemen know their stuff) which has helped me to lose and keep off about 20 pounds. Not only have I dropped 2 pant sizes, but I am sure that if I keep going to Commotion regularly I will lose another pant size by next summer and be in the best shape I've been in the last 10 years. Seriously, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't checkout their unlimited package. Their team will help you change your life! read more

I've never left a Yelp review before but I really want to for Commotion. I've struggled with fitness my whole life and genuinely, sincerely really hate the gym. One day I strolled into Commotion and I've been hooked ever since. Dawn is full of tons of positive energy, her fitness classes are so fun and upbeat, and she always makes you feel welcome and wanted, like you belong in her studio. Commotion is a friendly environment and the Zumba and fitness classes are actually of substance and REALLY well-taught. I've taken Zumba at a bunch of other studios and at my university before and nothing really compares. Its a little pricy but I think its worth it, just cut down on eating out a few times and accommodate classes at this place. I'm really grateful Commotion exists and I hope they only continue to add different types of classes :):) read more

My wife & I are very pleased with our weekly Pilates class at CoMMotion Dance & Fitness Studio. My doctor recommended that I take a Pilates class in order to deal with a chronic back problem and after taking the Pilates class for the past year-and-a-half, my quality of life has clearly improved. Our instructor, Bonnie, does an excellent job of explaining the correct form of each exercise to maximize it's intended benefit, increasing the complexity of the exercises as we progress in skill, and introducing new exercises to keep the work-out varied. Excellent studio! Reformer classes are taught by very knowledgeable and professional instructors.

This is amazing and quality dance studio that has turned out many professional dancers as well as those who have gone on to continue teaching dance. You will find a wide range of classes for all levels and should never feel embarrassed to challenge yourself in this environment. It is a very nurturing and family oriented studio but also very professionally run. The management that runs CoMMotion has been in in the area for decades and is well known throughout the USA. This studio has allowed it's students to perform on the national level as well as in local community events and fundraisers. If you are a beginner, intermediate or a professional, you will excel at CoMMotion and the staff and management there will do everything to help you excel and accomplish any and all goals you seek to attain. read more

CoMMotion is such an awesome place to dance and get in shape! The staff is friendly and supportive and the instructors are amazing!! About three years ago I started with Zumba once a week and now I'm there every day and am in the best shape of my life (wearing favorite clothes from over 10 years ago)! The trainers and instructors make it so fun that I look forward to my workouts. During the week the 10 a.m. class is different almost every day so I get a great workout mix without having to change my daily routine. I never thought I could do TRX (suspension training) and now I don't think I could live without it. It has made a huge difference in my fitness level and since there are modifications for every exercise I'm never nervous about trying something new...like the recently added Piyo class (Pilates/yoga combo) which is completely different from all the other fitness classes. The Zumba and Dance Fitness instructors keep the routines fresh and look for ways to challenge us and help us take our abilities to the next level. I'm also completely spoiled by the floor...it's a floating dance floor that never gets sticky so it is always easy to swivel and since it is floating (not just laid on the concrete) my knees never hurt. I've watched bits of their regular dance classes (jazz, hip hop, tap, ballet) and been impressed. So I think it's a great place for kids and people interested in those forms of dance, too. They keep the classes positive while still challenging the dancers and getting them to be the best they can be.
