I had been struggling to find comfortable and good-fitting dress shirts since I was a teenager. I am tall and broad shouldered with a thicker than average neck, so even the most expensive or high end off the rack clothes never quite fit right. Sleeves were too short, jackets bunched, and pants were just a horror show. Enter Commonwealth Proper. I set an appointment with Kurt to start with a half dozen shirts. From the moment I walked in the door I knew that I was in the right place. We discussed what I was looking for in fit, my personal style, colors, textures, patterns, and some unique design features that I've only ever found at CMMP. We took some measurements, picked what I wanted from hundreds of samples, and about 4 weeks later I went back to pick up my new duds. WOW! Each one was a perfect fit, like it had been made specifically for me (hint: It was). I was so thrilled that I set an appointment for a suit fitting and another round of shirts the for the following week. This time Kurt and I had a whiskey while we designed a fantastic 3 piece wool suit. Just a month later I went in for the second fitting, and after 4 days and a few small alterations, I had a perfect suit. I really can't say enough good things about the staff, selection, atmosphere, and all-around good work at Commonwealth Proper. As I prepare to move to a new city in the summer of 2017, I know I will be in at least one more time for a couple of suits and to add a few staple shirts to my wardrobe. Is CMMP pricey? Sure, but I'm happy to pay for high quality and expert advice whenever it is available. Bespoke shirts and suits are an extremely intimidating idea, especially for someone who has never so much as had a formal fitting in their life. If you're anything like myself you are probably thinking; "why the hell do I need any sort of custom made suiting?" Listen, the experience is not as terrifying as you might be thinking and keep in mind it never hurts to just have a consolation with any of the style advisors they have on hand. From the moment you step into their showroom everyone there is very welcoming and make you feel comfortable. Don't expect a heavy sales pitch, these are not sleazy sales people, they are professionals who legitimately want you to look and feel great, but they also want you to feel inspired by your selection. Remember, this is bespoke, so you're in control from: color, design, button selection, and any other subtle detailing that escapes every piece of Ready To Wear clothing you can find everywhere. Kurt was amazing during my visit to the Philadelphia Flagship location. He did one of the most important things any person in the service field can do; he listened. He never tried to up sell me on better fabrics or better buttons, he gave me selections that were in my price range and helped me with vast fabric knowledge, and even helped narrow down my choices based on my existing wardrobe. I created, in my opinion, the perfect shirt... something that I know I could never find in a store and it is a direct reflection of my personality. What it boils down to is this, bespoke clothing is more than just clothing, it's a statement about yourself, it's the silent personal hype man. I have had custom suits, shirts and shoes made by a wide variety of tailors and companies in the USA and abroad. I am very familiar with the process and can typically can avoid anticipated problems and an amateur type company. Unfortunately, when I decided to test Commonwealth Proper for shirts I was mistaken that the company was to produce a high quality garment and deliver what they promised, when they promised with integrity. I ordered 4 custom shirts which arrived for delivery several weeks after the date I was promised. I do understand that there can be delays but, it was noted to me that this was due to the shirt makers planned summer vacation. I did not really understand if this was a planned interruption in production why the garments were delivered late. The more unfortunate issue was that the shirt design and fit were not what I requested. They were able to change one of the design requests but failed to either re-make or change the other request that I made on my original order. I was now approximately 3 months into a process that was promised to take 4 weeks. The company agreed to refund me and I was more than happy to accept. Unfortunately, they did not do so promptly and had to dispute the charge with my credit card company. I did not enjoy working with this company nor would I recommend them for bespoke clothing. It is interesting that other clients had similar experiences. read more

Their styling is a melange of luxury juxtaposed by rebel edginess and hints of whimsy. Sucked in by their imagery, we were rendered helpless plebes in the court of majestic fashion. Either the Commonwealth Proper design team does not sleep or they have gnomes whose sole jobs are to make sure everything is in place because it is indeed- modern, cool, imperfect perfection. We had to know this company and luck had us in Philadelphia. Mike Mast was our consultant. Comfortably chic and unassuming, he worked tirelessly for over an hour, line by line or stitch by stitch with us. No question was too inconsequential. When we felt we had left no buttons unturned, we left with an education and a deep appreciation for attention to detail. The following weeks will prove how Commonwealth stands by customer satisfaction. My fiancé had his first fitting and returned home, uncertain of the outcome. I prodded him for details as I was not present, and promptly emailed Julia our concerns. Almost immediately, I get a response by Craig, CMMP founder to ensure a second fitting, to address each, specific concern my fiancé had, also to model how his favorite suits normally fit him. The second fitting went swimmingly upon several more exchanges via email between Craig and I. So last week my fiancé picked up The Suit, as it will henceforth be referred to. I will just say it's The Suit because to adorn it with many flowery adjectives will take away from it. It is indeed, simply The Suit. My fiancé and I are in awe of CMMP's design and service. The only regret is that we cannot have this experience regularly as a CMMP suit is an indulgence. My two cents: you get what you pay for and if you didn't, why did you pay for it? read more

I feel compelled to write a review because I was hesitant to go with CMWP because of some poor Yelp reviews, but I decided to give it a try anyway and go in for a consultation. I guess everyone's experience is different but I couldn't have asked for a better experience at CMWP. I'm not exactly what you call a "fashionista" In fact, my fashion sense sucks, but I needed a suit for a wedding and with my small body type I decided I didn't want to look like a kid making his first holy communion so I went custom. There's nothing cheap about it. I think I paid roughly $2200 (maybe a little less) but I was, by far, the best dressed guy at this wedding. I was better dressed than the groom. I know this, because the bride told me.... in front of the groom. You certainly get what you pay for, you're going to look good. As for customer service, my experience was awesome. The staff realized that my event would cut it close to their usual 6-8 week turnaround and while I expected it to be 8 weeks, they made sure it was in 6 so I would have enough time to come in and get any alterations to it. When I came in to try it on after the original alterations the guy there (whos name I forget) started pointing out some things that could be fixed. Things that I didn't notice but he did. He said "we want to make sure we get it right" which I appreciated because honestly, I never would've known and he could very easily let me walk out the door. They had my money at this point, but he took the time and the next day I got a call telling me it was done. Every time I tried to get in contact with the staff, Julie was more than accommodating and Aaron, the owner, couldn't have been nicer. I'm not saying the negative reviews are wrong, I'm just saying that they were the polar opposite of what I experienced. If I ever need a new suit I'll definitely go back. We had an amazing experience designing Wedding Suits, shirts and an entire accessorized look with Commonwealth Proper! I've had custom clothing made for me in 4 different countries and this was, by far, the best experience. The atmosphere was fun and casual. Nothing was ever forced on us, lots of great suggestions and help, but we made the final decision. We were never rushed, and we spent hours brainstorming ideas and never felt any pressure to "hurry up" and buy something. They knew our wedding deadline and always made sure we knew when we needed to come in for the next fitting, to insure we met our timing. Everything was done on time and at the agreed upon price. We loved all the creative ideas and suggestions and they even took us out of the store to go accessory shopping with us (buying hats, belts, shoes and socks). Then we all explored the internet to find great retro bow-ties on ETSY. The point is, it was not just about the suits, they wanted to make sure we had a complete look that fit the theme of our wedding (a 1960's wine weekend in Napa)...so they designed new pieces that looked vintage but could also be re-worn after the wedding. Kurt, Craig and Vanessa were all wonderful to work with...they were professional, knowledgeable, creative and FUN! This was a very different experience than having suits made in Europe or Asia! Worst tailoring and clothing experience I've ever had. Only nice thing about my suit is the fabric I picked out. After multiple botched fittings I gave up and took suit to another tailor to fix it. Tailor commented how bad the suit was: cheap machine sewn blind stitching on the pant hems that left visible dotting on the cuff, arms weren't tapered and length was too long, there was a tear on the interior lining I didn't know about that he showed me and fixed. This place's whole schtick is offering you a drink when you walk in and having hipsters with hand tattoos teach the "bespoke" suit making process. These are cheap imported suits (which is why they're often delivered late) that they order overseas and get mass altered in a factory. Unless your body proportions require custom clothes, custom suits are a complete waste of time and money. Buy an H&M suit (or name brand if you want) and get a good tailor. You'll look better and waste less time. Also bought a shirt during same fitting. they completely screwed it up, obviously lost my order and someone else's measurements were delivered. They refused to offer refund, only store credit. Requiring me to go back for new measurements and waste another afternoon fixing their mistakes. Don't be shy to call your credit card company and dispute charges if item you purchased is not delivered. This stores business practices are despicable. read more

As I expected and noted in my original review, Commonwealth Proper responded with some absolute BS. Their response clearly confirms our original impression of them. So - potential customers beware. I feel compelled to respond to point out: 1. They say "we worked diligently over several weeks and multiple missed appointments to accommodate you and your fiancee." Nope. Sorry. You must be confusing us with other customers. This just did not happen. We were only in Philly two weekends over the past 1 year. We had the first appointment the first weekend, and came in SPECIFICALLY for the second appointment a few weeks later, in which we rescheduled only one time, and for which we gave them several hours notice. 2. They say "we stayed past our scheduled closing time more than once." Again. Nope. Didn't happen. 3. They say "we do regret the oversight in not contacting you when leaving the shop after hours, as that is counter to our policy." This is honestly just a joke. If I hadn't spent so much time and money trying get to this appointment, I probably would be able to laugh. We called Julia 30 minutes after our appointment time, standing outside Commonwealth like idiots, naively believing there was no way they would leave us stranded like this. We asked her, point blank, "if you weren't going to wait, why didn't someone call us to let us know?" Her response, word for word, was "well, we already rescheduled for you once and lost customers because of it." We spoke to the owner and asked him the same question, and he said "my time is incredibly important, and it's not my problem if someone is late." So you can yelp BS all you want, but I feel confident that your potential customers will be able to see through this absolute joke. 4. They say "It is disappointing that you will never have the opportunity to experience our products or services before judging them." Well, that's funny, because we tried REALLY REALLY hard to experience your products, but you seemed determined to make sure we wouldn't. And we experienced well enough of your services, and that was enough for us. Please stay away. There are so many better ways (and better people) to spend your money if you need a suit. read more

We're big fans of the folks over at CMWP. However I am biased towards any place that hands you a rye on the rocks when you walk in. Staff is nice, knowledgeable, cool and all that good stuff. Store looks great etc. Now I am not a big spender when it comes to clothes... total jeans and a t-shirt kind of guy. So the good news is that with CMWP you will get what you pay for, the potential bad news is (depending on how much you're used to spending) it's going to be a lot. The suit I bought from them is the most expensive suit I've ever purchased - it's also the best. If you're the kind of person that doesn't mind paying for quality, then you'll be happy with what you get. They have really cool stuff on the racks as well, but it's also pricey (for my blood anyway). As someone who isn't super into clothes, but is very particular about what I like in a suit, I was pleasantly surprised by how well that whole process went. They noticed for instance that I wear my pants low, and asked if there was any chance that I wore my suit pants correctly. I've had this conversation with every tailor ever, so I know how it goes. When I said "nope" they didn't miss a beat or roll their eyes, they said "Cool. We'll tailor your pants to fit that way". I got EXACTLY the suit I wanted and it looks totally badass. Which is the point. One of the dudes that runs the joint is an old buddy of mine so they also threw in a free shirt. Which was of course, super nice of them - however the shirt I tried on in my fitting ended up not being the shirt I got. Which, while its hard to complain about someone doing you a favor, was a bit of a bummer because while the shirt looked fantastic, and fit like a glove - it was the single most heavy/stuffy shirt I've ever put on. Full stop. Again the suit I got here literally drops jaws and feels handcrafted and well made - and the shirt was no different, but that didn't make it any more wearable. I spoke with them about it and they did apologize for having me try on a different shirt then the one they intended to give me, but of course thought I was crazy for not liking the shirt they gave me. I mean at the end of the day it was free, and a shirt is easier to replace than a suit - so no harm no foul really in my case, but when you're dealing with a customization at that level you just have to be 100% sure you know what's going on and don't assume anything. Quality takes time. They are also not a quick turn joint. Luckily I had time until I needed mine but it was still down to the wire. You definitely want to make sure you're talking to these cats months in advance. If you've got an event next week this isn't the place to go. Also from reading the other reviews if you're a bridezilla from NYC who's looking to make a decision on what suit her husband wears for the wedding I don't think this is the place for you. However the main point is that I was happy with my experience overall and more importantly got the suit I wanted. As a guy I can't recommend CMWP enough. If you're looking for a suit to kill it in - they'll get you sorted out. read more

My boyfriend from New York came to Philly for as appointment, I wanted to buy him a gift, something special from his place CMMP. I had been researching custom shirt makers, his dad always wore custom shirts. We showed up, rang the bell for 15 minutes with no answer, middle of the day. Ended up walking around the corner to a store called Boyds and got not only great service but five shirts and a suit. I to got a great pair of shoes. Next time you visit Philly, go to Boyd's!!! Great Experience at CMMP... I would say I am your normal standard dresser and when it came to suits it was much more of the same. I always took the easy way out for suits (JOS A BANK or Mens Warehouse). You go in, pick something out, it gets sent to you, and you get a couple minor things done by the tailor. Easy breezy but the quality and style always seemed to be lacking. I always felt a little sloppy in those suits even with tailoring; they never seemed to fit my body just right. So I end up meeting a fabulous girl and next thing you know we are getting married (ok it was 4 years later but anyway). We talked it over and decide we wanted to invest in a great suit that I could not just wear on my wedding day but for years to come after. Renting a suit or tux for my wedding day was just not going to happen. We investigated a few custom suit places. After hearing great things about CMMP, we decide to give it a shot. I took the ride from NJ to Philly to meet with Craig and his team. The team worked around my schedule to make sure my appointments worked for me and they were ready to go every time I showed up. Having a great style was never really my thing but Craig made the experience smooth and easy. Top to bottom he set me up with an amazing 3 piece suit and custom shirt. He also took the time to research some shoe choices that would help compliment my custom suit. The suit fit perfect and it made me feel like a new person. I had a new sense of confidence as soon as I put it on for my wedding day. I spent the first three months after getting engaged looking for a place to get my wedding suit. After visiting about a dozen different places in and around Philly I finally found CMMP. My first visit I did not have an appointment but Craig spent some time with me to talk about fabrics and ideas he thought would look good with my style. I never told him I was getting married and he never told me I was crazy or roll his eyes when I had non traditional requests. The issue I had with all of the other places I went to was the tailor/designer telling me what I wanted, instead of the other way around. I own many suits but never went all-in on a custom suit and for my wedding I wanted what I wanted. At my first measurement appointment I met Kurt, who I now consider a friend. He walked me through the entire process and how to pick my fabrics, my look and how to put it all together. By the time I left my first appointment I had a fabric and ordered a custom shirt. The first fitting we made a couple adjustments nothing to grand. They actually took the time to make some adjustment while I was there and remeasured to get everything the way I wanted it. My second fitting.....like I said I own many suits, I have never had anything fit me so well. Honestly, nothing can compare. I was so impressed and my Fiancé was so impressed we gave the vest and jacket back to them to put in a custom lining. We realized how well this was made and decided to go all the way custom. Everything they did was on time. Kurt communicated with me about everything including when I missed appointments and helped me reschedule. They kept the shop open later for me to make sure everything was right. Yes, it is most expensive suit I own(not by much) but it is also the best suit I own, the best shirt I own , and the only suit possibly in the world with a purple snake patterned liner by Alexander McQueen. If you want a real deal suit go to CMMP. But also know that their reputation is based on their work being worn. Their craft takes time and their materials are of the highest quality. They will do their best to accommodate a busy schedule but will not compromise on their craft. They will need time and couple visits but you are not getting a suit off of a rack here.
