This location gets a bad rap. I arrived as a walk in at 11:45am today. I was taken back before 1pm and was heading out to my car by 2pm. Considering they accept walk in patients without an appointment (and the lobby was full when I arrived) that's extremely understandable and not unreasonable. Kathy at Check-In was attentive and welcoming. Lianne who worked me up and took my vitals was efficient, thorough and kind and I appreciated the rainbow pin. ; ) Dr Edwin Robinson was prompt, attentive, compassionate and a good listener. Be kind at medical facilities and to medical staff. It's a tough field to work in and the work ethic I saw today is where it should be. Well done! read more

I have been a patient of CPC for about 25 years - or at least I was - with good service but I tried to make an appointment with my PCP today and was told I was no longer a patient of theirs, I would have to re-enroll as a new patient, and they weren't accepting any new patients. I didn't know doctors offices broke up with their patients without even a text message, but that's how they treat you apparently. read more

Wouldn't help me get a DNA test processed. Had to ask another of my doctors to sign the form!!!! They wanted to refer me to VCU Medical DNA doctors. Would have required $$$ Just unbelievable. I have been a patient at CPC for about 25-30 years. Most of my experiences have been positive, however my recent extended care visit has me a bit concerned on the direction their care is headed. I injured my shoulder/arm and went through the extended care facility. I arrived at 1:37pm (there were four people ahead of me), was taken to the back to a room at 3:00ish pm. Nikta Safavi, PA-C saw me at 3:45pm and ordered x-rays (mind you x-rays closes at 4:00pm). I was taken back for x-rays, back in the room by 4:20 and waited till 4:50pm for the Safavi to come back to the room and tell me no broken bones. Safavi wanted to prescribe me medicine that I explained to her I could not take (she still prescribed it), never submitted the prescription I could take or the referral for an Ortho visit. I had to call multiple times to get the medication and the referral. While Safavi was pleasant she came across unsure and not very confident in what she was doing. I was surprised to learn she has been a PA for a number of years. Perhaps she was just having a bad day? I do know I will not use the Extended Clinic for any future walk-in visit. read more

Commonwealth Primary Care has been my primary medical providers for years. In the past couple of years I have changed my specific provider to Christopher Dao. PA. He is personable, informed, compassionate and thorough. It feels like I am his only patient during my appointments. I use their portal and Chris replies promptly to all of my inquiries. Highly recommend! read more

I had been a patient at CPC for over 20 years. I was last seen by Lindsey Klein, MD. I would not recommend her or her staff. There wasn't any since of urgency and providing test results, etc. I called once and was told they would be mailed, as if I could understand the report or interpret what it meant. I was asked to come in to the office to be 'evaluated' for a pre-existing condition with snow and ice on the ground because they had cancellations and I could be seen that day. There was a lack of empathy and compassion from her, nurse and PA when providing updates, etc. " I understand " was their standard repeated response, for everything!. At one point she refused to order lab work that was requested by the specialist. lHer message to me from her nurse was the Orthopedic Doctor, could order it. All because I couldn't come in with mobility issues during inclement weather, I guess it was about billing my insurance for an office visit? ! Her bedside manner is lacking and her tone is condescending. I'm not sure if this is with all of her patients or just a particular demographic? Side note, the front desk staff and phlebotomist are professional, caring and kind, including Chris Dao, PA. People including patients will always remember how you make them feel! read more

If you are on Medicare, review your billing statement carefully: Commonwealth tried billing me for amounts above what Medicare deemed reasonable and customary. (An example would be if a doctor files charges for $200, Medicare thinks $150 is reasonable and customary, and the Billing office still charges YOU the $50 difference.) This is an unfortunately-common practice done by Medicare-contracted facilities and is in violation of their contract. You do NOT owe any money above what Medicare deems reasonable and customary. You owe only the 20% Medicare doesn't cover, and not even that if you have supplemental insurance that pays the 20%. read more

The practice overall is good but I do not recommend Kedron Walsh. She refused to see me when I was only 10 minutes late for an appointment even though the manager of the Short Pump/Ridgefield practice told me they have a 15 minute grace period but the decision to see a late arriving patient is up to the individual provider who was Kedron Walsh. There were no other patients in the waiting room when I arrived. I needed a medication refilled that creates serious side effects if you stop taking it immediately, which I explained when I called on Thursday, a few days earlier, and Ms. Walsh would not even call in enough to get me to the appointment on Monday. In addition to this, in the past, she prescribed Rexulti and only after I came home and did my own research I realized how dangerous this drug can be and should not have been prescribed for me, none of which she even discussed with me during our appointment. She clearly does not understand drug implications. We also had to request a referral to a neurologist specialist for my husband which took two requests and two weeks to get and I was never notified that it got sent until I followed up. I explained during the appointment that a neurologist was needed to prescribe a recently FDA-approved medicine that he had been taking during a trial study with National Clinical Research. She had never heard of NCR, despite a full-size poster in the very examine room we were in. My husband and I have had excellent care under Dr. Foster at the practice for 25+ years but Ms. Walsh does not meet their standards of competence, patient care or customer service. The manager I spoke to (Leah) had absolutely no compassion and did not seem to care at all when I informed her they just lost two very long-term patients. read more

I've been seeing Beth Rhamy for years and I won't see anyone else. I drive from Mechanicsville to see her. A few years ago I was having issues with my gallbladder and no one would listen to me or help me. On the first visit with Beth, she not only listened to me but referred me for testing within a few days time. I never feel rushed seeing her. She takes her time to hear me out and if they do blood work, she lets me know the results by the next day with a breakdown of any changes and any concerns. There's very minimal wait time and the staff are very friendly. read more

I have not seen my primary doctor for about 3 years because of all the changes that have happened... I feel bad reading some of these reviews but I didn't have an experience like that, mine went smoother than I expected. I made an appointment about a month or two out and landed one (before Thanksgiving). I made an afternoon appointment for 11:15 AM with Dr. Hackleton. I came right at 11:15 AM and checked in within a few minutes and was called back by 11:30 AM. It was an easy breeze and I was out by 12:05 PM. I can't believe how quickly this actually went...did I miss something? I guess it depends on what type of appointment it is but I was really shocked that I was out within an hour for my physical. I was even able to make an appointment for this upcoming year! I may have just gotten lucky, but I hope that my 2020 physical appointment happens smoothly like 2019. read more

Stopped filling my prescriptions because I moved, even for non controlled substances. Gave me zero forewarning with a medication that was not supposed to be abruptly stopped. Unwilling to compromise and provide supply in the interim for me to find a new doctor. Left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I arrived a few minutes before 3:30 pm. There was one other person in the waiting room. After a half hour I was taken for measurement of vitals, then to a treatment room, where I waited, without any attention, for at least 30 minutes. I texted my husband who was in the waiting room to let him know that I had not been seen. He said that the woman who had been called in just before me had just left. When the PA finally arrived he seemed competent and concerned, apologized for the wait, asked about my symptoms, and sent me for collection of a urine sample which took perhaps 5 minutes. Returning to the treatment room, I waited another 20-30 minutes, as the time passed 5 pm. Multiple staff members were leaving, going home. The PA returned to give me the lab results and brief commentary. My husband noted that during the time I was waiting in the treatment room, several people who had come after I had apparently gotten treatment and left. Was I forgotten? This is the place suggested by Commonwealth Primary Care at Ridgefield when an appointment with my regular PCP is unavailable, which is the usually the case. Time to find another PCP! read more

There are some with mentally disabled family members, that have trouble seeing a different doctor every time. what is the use having a doctor if, when you call he is always unavailable. My doctor in 1989 started out great, talked to you a lot, but he moved up the ladder, and got more busy. I like Dr. G. a lot , he saved my life once. I guess it is the system. read more

I've been a patient for 20+ years. When I tested positive for covid they told me to go home, take Tylenol and go to the ER if I can't breathe. I called them 2 days later about trying to get help with coughing - never talked to a doctor - nurses answer all questions. I ended up with pneumonia and I credit the staff and ultimately the doctors at CPC for neglecting to give me any care for my symptoms. Basically the practice is run by the front desk and the nurses. Stay away from this practice- they do not care about their patients! read more

In trying to find a new primary care doctor in Richmond I called here. I needed a few blood tests and made an appointment with one of the physician's assistants. I was on hold forever trying to make an appointment and had to make one for months out (which I had expected). When I arrived for my appointment it was crowded in the waiting room (despite being mid-covid). I had to wait in line to check in. I waited for a while and then was taken back. Despite being a new patient, the PA (Nikta Safavi) only talked to me for about two minutes. I then waited an additional 15 minutes in line to check out. I was then charged an incorrect bill despite having given my insurance card which I had to call insurance to sort out because the practice didn't put in the right billing code. I needed some more blood work that I get done regularly with my doctor where I used to live. I sent a message through the patient portal to ask if I could just schedule a nurse visit/ lab work visit to get in quicker. I got a message back from a nurse addressing me by an incorrect name and telling me to schedule an appointment to talk to the PA about making an appointment for bloodwork. I will be looking for a new primary care practice. read more

I've been seeing Dr Koontz for about 4 years. I have chronic illness. He is very compassionate and concerned. He has helped me immensely and always takes the time to listen to my needs and concerns. DO NOT GO HERE. HORRIFIC experience. I cannot possibly explain how much they do not care and do not KNOW. NO hand washing, NO gloves, disregarded and dismissed anything and everything I said. I didn't get a single word in I was so unbelievably rushed. I was prescribed "a steriod", wasn't told what it was other than that, how or when to take it, or for how long. I was a patient at Huguenot Primary Care (HPC) on Huguenot Rd. in Midlothian, which then became Commonwealth Primary Care (CPC) before closing their doors. At HPC/CPC I had first seen Dr. Kathleen Marshall, who was absolutely wonderful, but she left the practice. Then I saw Dr. Tammy Manzourus?(forgive my spelling). She left too, so I then saw Dr McLean. My husband had seen Dr. Kothary. When HPC notified their patients that they were closing, we were told that we could see providers with other CPC locations. Dr. McLean and Dr. Kothary are now at different offices. I would like to go to the same office as my husband. Since we already have records with CPC we wanted to continue with this group but perhaps choose a different provider so that we could be seen at the same location. In April I went for a sick visit and saw Dr. Haacke-Golden. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which is relatively uncommon, and therefore not a lot of practitioners are familiar with it. When I saw Dr. Haacke-Golden for a sick visit in April, I was pleasantly surprised when he he told me that he was knowledgeable about EDS and have several EDS patients. So understandably I would like for him to be my primary care doctor rather than Dr. McLean. Nothing against Dr. McLean personally; I just really would liked to have my primary care doctor to be familiar with EDS since it complicates basically every aspect of my health. So today I called to make appointments for routine physicals and bloodwork for my husband and myself. The receptionist (her name may have been Emily, but I'm not on that) did not sound happy to be at work. First she told me that my husband and I cannot "just transfer" to one of their locations. Why the heck not? It's not all the time. I know I already have a chart with them and I'm still active on their patient portal. She told me that we would have to see the same doctors that we had seen at HPC/CPC on Huguenot Rd. or we'd have to be seen as "new patients." Ok, my husband can see Dr. Kothary again. Oh but he could not see my husband until December--which is six months from now. I told her I wanted to see Dr. Haacke-Golden, because he is familiar with EDS, and she told me I couldn't do that, that I had to see Dr. McLean Because that's who I had seen before. I told her that I just saw Dr. Haacke-Golden in April. She said, "but that was for a sick visit. For routine care visits and physicals, we could not choose which provider we wanted to see. But even if I was allowed to actually choose which provider to provide medical my care, Dr. Haacke-Golden isn't accepting any new patients at this time, the receptionist told me. Her tone of voice conveyed zero warmth or concern. She could not have been less helpful. Maybe she was having a bad day. But unfortunately, it seems it's still par for the course with this place--the receptionists at HPC were also extremely unfriendly, unaccomodating and seemed to truly resent having to assist patients. I Have seen countless specialists due to my EDS (two dozen in the past two years), And I've never been told that I had to see the same provider every time and did not have the right to see the provider of my own choosing. So why is it that at Commonwealth Primary Care, can I not choose who I want to see among their many providers? Do they not share a central database where patient records are stored and a network of computers to access those records? If not, then how was I able to see Dr. Haacke-Golden in April for a sick visit without having to fill out new patient forms? They had gotten my medical records from somewhere. So, my husband and I will be looking for new primary care providers where the receptionists are not so miserable, where we may choose our care providers, and where my we don't have to wait six months a physical. read more

I am a Nurse Practitioner. My 85 year old father (retired physician) was discharged from hospital last week was and treated horribly by the Family Practice clinic after notifying them there was an accident on the highway and they would be a few minutes late. The practice refused to see my Dad even though he NEEDED post hospital medical care for a heart condition and cancer. Not only is this a dangerous medical practice but the lack of compassion, respect and discernment are appalling. If I treated my patients this way I'd be fired in a heart beat. We are NEVER going back there. read more

I have to concur with the other review from the Nurse a Practitioner. I am a regular patient, but occasionally when there are no appointments available I am bumped to the over flow care for this practice. First time I was in extreme pain only to get a lack luster response from the doctor. That time I ended up with rotator cuff surgery. More recently I have had to come to this overflow because I have to be seen by a doctor to make sure a cold/flu type of situation has not developed into an infection because I recently had a hip replacement and an infection could be a problem. I didn't mind so much that my doctor didn't have any appointments available. What I did mind was the joy that the office person seemed to have telling me this. As the other review indicated there was no sense of empathy, no "I am sorry about the situation," nothing even close. This is terribly unfortunate especially since these employees are the face of the brand/business. Now I am waiting to see a doctor in the overflow and it is going on two hours. Kind of adds insult to injury. read more
