This past Friday I had to go to Sainte Genevieve for a funeral. The funeral was for a very sweet woman, Marilyn. She truly was one of the sweetest women I had ever met. I love Sainte Genevieve and enjoy walking around the quaint streets and checking out the shops. Common Grounds always seemed to be closed when I was down there. (They are closed on Sundays and Mondays and I am guessing that's when I usually visit. Interesting.) Anyway, after the funeral I just sort of felt a little off. I needed to go back to St. Louis but also noticed that Common Grounds was open and I wanted to check it out. So, in honor of one of the sweetest I knew I decided to go in and see what kind of sweets they had and to get a coffee to go. As soon as I opened the door I was greeted with 3 "hellos". I am guessing the employees were told to always greet the customers. It was nice and cheery. The place was spotless. Lots of cute signs and pictures. Lots of tables to sit around. Very spacious and yet cozy. You know what I mean. I should mention that this is no ordinary coffee house. Ninety percent of the employees are special needs. I noticed several people eating sandwiches and was going to detour from my "sweet" mission but stayed the course. I got to the register and the guy behind it looked intense. He was nice...don't get me wrong. BUT I guarantee no one is going to mess with the register with him working. The guy next to him looked like he was ready for whatever I was going to throw his way and there was a girl who sort of hid to the left of me behind the counter. I looked up at the drink board and noticed they could make me a Dirty Chai. LOVE THOSE! And that is just what I needed to get in gear to get back to St. Louis and maybe get a little work done in the afternoon. I told them what I wanted and was asked by the guy not working the register if I wanted some flavoring - like pumpkin spice. (DO NOT judge me but I am NOT a fan of pumpkin, much less pumpkin spice - something I am constantly being ridiculed for from friends since I was born in October.) I told them, "you know...I am just not a fan of pumpkin spice or any flavoring but thanks". To which they both replied, "we don't even drink coffee". To say I was a little surprised would be a shock...I was thinking, shouldn't you drink coffee to at least be able to make sure you were making the "fun" coffees (like my dirty chai) correctly? So now I was really interested. Next, the pastry case. They had beautiful scones, muffins, cookies and hand held pies. There was a lot to choose from and while I was there on a "sweet" mission to honor Marilyn, she was no glutton...one is just fine. But, which one? I said aloud but to no one in particular..."the scones look great. Hmmm, maybe a muffin...that blueberry lemon looks..." Didn't even get to finish...the shy quiet girl behind the counter jumped over to the case and said, "the blueberry lemon muffins are great and they have a lemon cream in the middle...they are really good and I can heat it up for you". I am paraphrasing. She was so excited about this muffin I had to try it. So I said, "let's do it". She sprung into action and before long I was walking away from the counter with muffin, napkins and beverage. ALL reasonably priced. Here is the deal. The Dirty Chai was the best I have ever had. Seriously. (Lesson learned - you don't need to drink coffee to know how to make a coffee.) The muffin was fabulous. I can see why she got so excited about it. It was a little too warm borderline hot but honestly it was so moist and that center lemon cream or whatever just - well look at my picture. It oozed out and was so good. I will make sure that the next day I go to Sainte Genevieve it's NOT on a Sunday or Monday. So, I was there for the funeral on Friday why am I writing on Sunday? I went to a couple of my favorite places for a Dirty Chai in St Louis. Yup...Common Grounds is better. (NOT to mention better priced and you get the ambiance of a beautiful small town too. Can't beat that!) Bottom line...I totally succeeded in honoring Marilyn by embracing sweetness. I went into a sweet place, met some sweet people and had a sweet treat. To Marilyn - RIP - one of the sweetest women I ever met.

This is a very cute place. Bravo on the décor!!! The owner is quite pleasant and very interactive.... Please don't ever lose that attribute We as consumers love that our patronage is important to you. My dirty chia was very good My lemon raspberry scone really needed more flavor of both. The texture and consistency was very nice. My hubby got the cinnamon swirl... deLISH!!! We both ordered the burrito. I liked the flavor of it but WOAHHHH on the heat. I know that is a preference to many. Unfortunately not mine or his. I can't hold that against the rating because I know that we are wimpy when it comes to heat I would totally come back, in a heartbeat!! Just to enjoy your beautiful pastries and coffees. Great job on a successful biz!!

My husband and I stopped in this adorable corner coffee house for breakfast and a coffee this morning. The store is impeccably decorated, very clean, beautifully furnished with rustic furniture and the food and service are outstanding! I had a spinach and feta quiche and my husband had the breakfast burrito (full of sausage, eggs and cheese). Both were outstanding! I almost got a second quiche to go! We had a drip coffee and a toasted marshmallow mocha to drink. They partner with Kaldi's coffee, and when you order a drip coffee, you can fill with one of several varieties they have on carafes on their bar. The coffee is steaming hot, as it should be, and very flavorful. They also have a good selection of flavors for mochas or lattes. There's a cute little selection of branded shirts as well as home baked dog biscuits, which we purchased. The dogs LOVED the treats! We will be back for sure.

I found this shop about a year ago and it has become my favorite place to get coffee. Great coffee, great service. I had the Irish cream latte, and it was delicious. The inside of common grounds is also decorated really nicely

Therefore we opted to get the bakery to go. The staff were nice and friendly. We ordered our bakery items and walked around this town to explore this town for a little bit. Despite living in STL for over 30 years and having visited Kimswick many times for their various "festivals", we'd never eaten at the Blue Owl, since the place is usually packed. This morning was no different, but to our great surprise, they got us a table for 2 right away. We were seated just after 11 am, which was unfortunately too late for their breakfast menu, so lunch it was! We started with 2 cups of freshly brewed coffee . My lunch selection was a slice of their homemade chicken pot pie, freshly made crust and large bites of chicken inside, topped with a cheese covered crust. It was fresh & delicious! For a side I had a large serving of curly fries, doubt they were made in house, but they were good! My wife eats largely plant based, and ordered a quiche... she may not have read the description of it closely, but as she took her first bite, she discovered it had bacon on it. Rather than send it back, she chose to eat around the bacon. I took a couple of bites and thought it was pretty tasty as well. She had a fresh fruit cup as her side, and it was just that: fresh fruit. The Blue Owl is known for their fresh bakery and after perusing their cake/pie menu, we decided on a lightly frosted carrot cake, but at a $52 price point, we thought it was pretty pricey and instead opted for 2 take-home slices ($7 each slice) to savor later today. Maybe it's holiday pricing, or maybe carrots have been subjected to the tariffs, but $52 for a store bought ( no matter how fresh) cake seemed a bit high. All in all, a delightful experience. The food was delicious and our server was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend The Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery in Kimswick, MO!
