Stopped here while on a road trip from Kansas City to Tulsa. It was Labor Day so I was happy to find a coffee shop open on the holiday. It was lovely inside with plenty of folks waiting for their coffee and food orders. Large space with even more space as you wander thru it. I ordered a small, hot oatmilk latte which is my go-to coffee beverage and it cost $6. I wish I could say I enjoyed it but I pretty much drank it as quickly as possible so I could get my caffeine fix. I couldn't put my finger on why the taste wasn't as pleasant as it should be - the coffee grounds had a slight burnt taste to it and honestly, I wasn't a big fan of the coffee in general. Contributing to my lack luster experience was the drab demeanor of the barista who took my order. I don't like giving less than stellar reviews but the point of yelp is to review your particular experience and this is mine. read more

Always come to Common Ground whenever in town and look forward to it! I was so excited about the "text us your order" feature on the website for order ahead and pick up, however, when I got there neither of the Baristas knew what I was talking about and had to retake our order. No apologies, explanation, or anything. When we ordered our drinks, one was the new seasonal Pumpkin Patch which was supposed to have cold foam on it and the other was an Iced Americano with Cold Foam. But when we asked why there was none on our drinks (like we ordered) they said it's broken and they did not charge us for it. Again no apologies or offer any thing else as a replacement for the "inconvenience ". I normally never have a problem with the staff whenever we come to town to see family, and always stop here for coffee, normally daily. But this is the first time being dissatisfied and disheartened by the customer service the staff provided. Coffee was still good but hope the home town customer service improves a little bit and the "text us your order" option gets ironed out to be a great addition to the shop. (I would only give one star, but because the coffee was good, I gave two.) read more

This is such a charming place. We found this coffee shop while in Ft. Scott, and as always I'm looking to check out coffee shops any place I go. Sometimes I find little gems, such as this one. Located in the downtown Ft. Scott area, this coffee shop is in one of the old buildings and inside a very spacious one at that. It is nicely remodeled and cozy, with lots of places to sit. The only thing that wasn't clear was that the hours of operation need to be updated, since Yelp had this place closing at 9, but it actually closes at 7 during the week. My husband had the drip coffee, which was good because it comes from Messenger. I was very pleased with the mocha that barista made. It wasn't overly sweet, and I could taste the espresso. They had a nice peach cobbler that I ate cold, but it was delicious. read more

Old building that has been preserved to reflect on this midwestern town. The employees are full of positive ones and listen to your order! Coffee is not roasted here but is very flavorful. Large selection of flavors are available. Went with my favorite...lavender and honey. A selections of in house made pastries made us get a blueberry scone. It was soft and packed with fresh berries. No vegan/ vegetarian options AT ALL. Still charge an up charge for oat, soy, all non dairy products - Scotters does offer vegan alternatives with no upcharge for milk that doesn't even involve a cow. The coffee is great usually but take my advice and DO NOT use the drive thru. I set and wait literally an aver of at least 10 minutes just to get my order taken and at least another 10 minutes waiting on them to make ONE hot mocha. Not to mention the drive thru is in an alley that other businesses use so you have to wait for other people to move out of the alley before you can even get to the window to make your order to wait a half an hour for one drink. read more

I stopped here today on my drive home to Dallas, Texas. This location popped up on Yelp and I had to gice it a try. Plus, with a seven hour drive, I needed the espresso. This coffeehouse is located on main street in Fort Scott. I was able to find a parking spot right across the street. The inside is super spacious and the baristas are very friendly. There are plenty of couches and comfortable seating for customers. There is also a stage that I assume is for live music. I ordered a large pumpkin spice latte and it was under $5. It was delicious and definitely gave me the caffeine I needed. This will be my stopping place each time I road trip home ;) read more

I freaking adore Common Ground. From the vibe to the coffee! The staff is always so friendly & the cold brew I've had is delicious. I make sure to stop here every time I am headed to Kansas City from Dallas. Drinks/food: I love that they have a "drink suggestions" jar in case you're wanting to try something new or, you're in for the first time and can't decide on something. They brew local coffee from other Kansas City spots too & there are a variety of pastries as well. The atmosphere: very "open mic" / cozy book store type. I asked what blends that had for their brewed coffee and I was told medium roast and dark roast. I tried to clarify that I was meaning what types of coffees make up those roasts and the employee asked if I just wanted to see the bags. I love the new location for Common Ground. My husband and I have been enjoying our morning coffee here lately. The interior has a cozy feel with the brick walls and the warm wood throughout. I especially love the rustic light fixtures and tin ceiling. The staff is friendly and always welcoming. There is a prayer board near the back where you are welcome to add your own. First impression, this coffee shop holds true to it's historic value and presentation. The exposed brick with a modern lift really creates an inviting space. The staff was ok and went through the motions, but it didn't feel like a "small town" coffee shop with the personality and kindness I was looking for. Love common ground so much!!! My personal favorite is always an iced coffee. They also have a thing where you can receive points and you can get discounts when you get so many points and I think its 100 points for a discount. They also have AMAZING food! I was in Ft. Scott twice during the Thanksgiving week in which we stopped by here on both occasions. They have a great selection of coffees, teas, and pastries. They also will fix you a sandwich. The staff is great to deal with and this is a nonprofit place run by the local church. The money is used to help abused women, I think. That is if I remember right on who they are helping, but I am sure they are helping someone. I wouldn't have guessed Fort Scott had a coffee shop pouring top-notch espresso drinks but it's true. Stopped here for an hour on the way to a gig and hopped onto their snappy free wireless and got some work done. Although the drinks come only in paper cups there was nothing lacking in the latte the barista poured. Top notch. But here's the thing about this place: Fort Scott suffers from the problem many small towns in Kansas are dealing with, that of a dying downtown. Vacant stores, antique malls moving into former retail spaces, etc. So, the fact that there's a nice place to hang out that serves great coffee and has lots of comfortable couches makes me really like this place. Whoever gave flights to this place, my hat is off to you. That alone makes it worth five stars. read more

I've lived in this small town of 8000 people since 1999, and I never thought we would have such a cool coffee house. The coffee, which comes from The Roasterie® in Kansas City, is excellent. The baristas are every bit as good as in the coffee shops in a big city. In addition to a variety of hot & cold coffee drinks, they have both bottled and fountain soft drinks, iced teas, etc. They serve panini and a few house-made baked goods, including excellent pies. The location is an 1880s Victorian building in the Downtown Historic District, but don't expect Victoriana inside. It has a very eclectic feel to it. There are both tables w/ chairs and large leather sofas. Local committees are welcome to meet there . There's a small stage for open-mic nights, and a projection TV can be used for special events like World Cup Soccer. Normally though, it's quiet enough for customers to work, write or study, and of course there's free WiFi. When you visit, ask how to sign up for their text message specials, and once or twice a week you'll hear about special discounts, freebies, and such. If you're visiting Fort Scott, don't leave this off your itinerary. You'll find some of us locals here 2, 3 or even 4 times a week. read more

Fantastic coffee selection, wonderful staff. Only complaint is the food. The grilled cheese is 2 pieces of dry toast with a piece of cheese on it that relies of the warmth of the already made toast to melt it. It doesn't melt, just gets kind of greasy. read more
