Had a stopover in Asheville and decided to check out a local comic shop. I happened to bring a dozen of my comics from the 60s for possible sale. I arrived and spoke with the owner briefly, then left my books for her to check out while I browsed the store. I must say I was amazed at how well the store was laid out. Plenty of room to browse the different areas and sections. All areas clearly marked and arranged by themes. Most comic stores tend to be crammed into tight spaces and claustrophobic but this store was a pleasure to go through Nice selection of back issues and current issues, figurines, posters, graphic novels, games, and much more. And very reasonable prices too. Highly recommend if you're in the Asheville area, check it out! Oh, the very knowledgeable owner and I came to a fair deal for a dozen of my books! read more

The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. They took good care of us. The selection seem to be more toward newer comics, with many boxes with back issues. Didn't see a lot of high quality key issues (wall books) when I was there. The pricing overall was what was to be expected for the new issues I purchased. They did seem to have some of the uncommon cover variants of some popular titles. read more

Ah, the small independent comicbook vendor. It is a very tough business to make a buck. Generally, the owner is still a gregarious geek who has such passion they tolerate everything. Not here... This owner is abrupt, too direct, & generally unfriendly. She can be somewhat approachable but really is standoffish to her customers. Don't bother to trade with her, not happening. She finds it worthless (though she'd sell the same stuff to you) & too much work!! I have visited a few times over the years, but I am almost afraid to go in. She bites... Cleaner shop than most, so be careful what you touch. And don't try conversation. It is a waste of her time. If you wonder why these shops fail...nuff said. There are many great comics & choices on Ebay & other online sites. It's a safer choice. read more

I'm a huge comic fan, but I always felt intimidated to meet and interact with others in the comic industry and fandom (for whatever reason). Maybe because I felt I may not be knowledgeable enough about certain things, or maybe it's because I'm a very open-minded person and some comic fans can be otherwise. However, Allison at Comic Envy has completely flipped that narrative around. After moving to Asheville, NC from San Diego, CA, I had quite a few options of local comic shops. After trying each one out, I kept coming back to Comic Envy because of the experience Allison gave me every single Wednesday (despite it being further from our house than some of the others). Allison is very easy to talk to and she has lots of knowledge across the comic industry as a whole. She never makes it difficult or intimidating when talking about comics as she wants to make it as easy as possible for you to navigate her store, but also become a comic fan in your own right! She has great recommendations and even if she has opinions, she never treats those opinions as facts, which is what I really appreciate about her. Plus, she's a huge X-Men fan, and one of the first diehard X-Men fans I've met in-person (I'm a huge online community nerd). I'm always looking forward to new comic book day because I know that Allison has my stuff prepared, she knows what characters and variants I would like best, and she remembers things we have talked about in the past, which means she's paying attention. My husband and I agree that Allison must have a huge memory because every time she's talking to one of her customers, it seems like they're old friends. However, she can easily read the room and understand what type of person you are. So if you're someone who may not be as sociable as me and would like your space, she'll pick up on that and respect it. She definitely caters her customer service to each person who visits the store. I hope Allison and Comic Envy stay in business forever because it's my little, personal getaway once I'm off work and I'd like to say that my husband and I have made a wonderful friend in her. #XMenForever read more

So nice we visited twice! My BF and I came to Asheville to visit my best friend, his fiancee, and their adorable new baby. My interest was 94% in hanging out with the baby, so to make the vacation appealing to both of us I took my boyfriend on a tour of his natural habitat, comic book shops. This was our favorite of the bunch. I enjoyed it for the super-friendly staff, fun gifts, and the clean, open setup of the shop. He enjoyed it for the wide variety, organization, and reasonable prices. He was able to snag the book with Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon's first kiss (I think that's what it was anyway) that he'd had his eye on for less than other retailers. Shouts out to the staff for letting a teen/young man who appeared to be a regular talk their ears off for a good twenty minutes or so about his interests and theories - he was clearly super excited and the staff mirrored his passion. On our next trip I'm sure we'll be back - while the BF liked many of the shops we visited, he said this is the one he'd return to. read more

Location - Comic Envy is located at 144 Tunnel Rd just off the loop and not far from downtown Asheville. Parking is available in back. Grade: A Atmosphere- This is undoubtedly the most clean, organized, well kept comic store in the Tri State area. All salespeople are friendly and professional. I always feel welcome and though it is almost 75 miles from my home, I get my subscriptions here over my local shops in tri cities. Grade: A+ Knowledge/Customer Service- Everyone here is a grade A comic nerd and know their business. They are helpful but not pushy, friendly but not intrusive. If you are looking for a particular back issue, the staff will allow you to reserve it in the event one is acquired. The young girl working last weekend even reexamined a book without prompting because she felt it was graded too high. After looking inside we realized it wasn't, but taking the time to be honest and vigilant to the customer is what this store is about and what puts Comic Envy in a different class. And yes, the owner will bargain on large purchases. Grade: A+ Quality/Selection- This is how new titles should be stored and displayed. They are well kept, easy to scan and in abundant supply. I discover a new indy title each visit and often get lost along the endless walls of new titles which are cycled out at a reasonable pace. Variants, as well as reader and mid grade back issues are abundant and very easy to access. Adult comics are near the counter. Children's titles which are absent at most stores are found near the door. Magazine comics from the 60s and 70s are near the back wall. A few toys ranging from vintage star wars to modern movie collections are available as well. The only major downside is a lack of of collector grade silver and bronze age comics. I would like to see a better selection of these in the future. Grade: A- Overall: This store is the standard for the TN, VA, NC area. Comic book shops have a reputation for being unwelcoming dens for boys in a state of arrested development, Comic Envy couldn't be further from this. The staff of the shop is extremely welcoming and knowledgeable, they don't care if you're looking for an indy bio comic, a superhero power fantasy, or some pretentious juxtaposed sequential art, all that matters is that you walked through the front door. If you know exactly what you're looking for they'll point you in the right direction. If you're looking for a recommendation they'll do that too. Never picked up a comic and have no idea where to start? They'll help with that too. This comic store is by far one of my favorite places to go. I go every chance I get and pick up comics every time. The staff is super friendly and everything is in alphabetical order, which is always a plus! I can't recommend this shop any more highly. I live about an hour away and after my local shop closed, I started making the commute to Asheville. I have zero regrets. The staff at Comic Envy is so personable and kind and so fun to talk to. They always remember my name and they always seem to be having a good day. I never leave without a huge smile on my face. Their selection can't be beat. And they are especially great at pinpointing your tastes and recommending other things you'll like. It wasn't a bad store. Not the best, but not bad. Way too many Pop! figures and toys you can buy at any other toy store (Walmart). Felt like there should have been more comics to choose from. They did give my husband a discount because he bought over 30 back issues, but that was about it. read more

I cannot say enough great things about Comic Envy! Although I know very little about comic books, I took my Girl Scout troop to Comic Envy to complete a badge they were working on and learn more about comics. The owner and his staff were so nice to the girls, and took time out of their evening to share with them about comic books, cartoons, and other series fandom. The owner made sure that none of the girls went home empty-handed, and they were all so excited and grateful. I was also so impressed with one of the young female staff members, who took time to talk to the girls about why comic books are empowering for women, and which series the girls should read to have strong female role models. The owner and staff are knowledgable about all things comics related, which means I can go in with a general idea of something my husband might like and they send me home with the perfect gifts! I came into this store as a tourist. I was going to purchase some books, just whatever caught my eye. My wife came in with me, now she isn't into comics like I am so she was browsing. Just passing time really. She picked up a book and was flipping through it. Now, instead of encouraging her to get the book because it might be something she would enjoy. She was told "this isn't a library". I understand the need to not let people just read the books. If you can flip through the book to check out the art you should be able to flip through the book to check out the writing. None of our money was spend here today and I can't say I'd recommend this comic shop. Especially with their regard for potential new customers. read more

I have lived all along the east coast from NY to FL and this is my favorite comic book store. Not only is the staff knowledgeable but they make you feel welcome. From the first time I walked in the door I was treated with respect and was given service that was above and beyond what many stores would ever consider doing. I came in on a slower day and the owner walked with me around the store showing me fun new titles to try, what he enjoys and we just shared friendly conversation. While on a visit to Asheville I stopped in here with my family. While my husband was building a stack of comics to buy, an employee came up and asked if my brother in law needed help finding something because you aren't allowed to read comics in the store. We promptly ended my husband's browsing and they both checked out (yes everyone was making a purchase). I understand the theory, but I guess don't come here unless you plan to make a quick purchase and leave immediately. read more

This place by far the best I have ever been too, EVER!!! Employees (which I believe were the owners) were incredibly helpful and such genuinely nice people. Place was laid out perfectly, Has an awesome selection of everything pop culture or comic related. Almost pulled the trigger on a harley quinn, but finances just didnt allow that day.
