While I was at first very apprehensive about the change, over the years I have found my initial fears to have been unfounded. Whatever Azalea's recruiting process, they employ an extraordinary staff - one consisting almost exclusively of people much kinder, friendlier, more caring, more patient and more positive in outlook than the norm! These are people who enjoy interacting with the residents, like what they are doing, and do it well - from the chefs who cook delicious meals for the residents to those who clean residents' rooms to the nursing staff and the management. Of special note is the assistance the staff gives residents with practical matters eg. Internet/online purchases and device maintenance. The planned activities, special meals, and social events are also very popular. And Azalea has a vibrant sense of community that never feels overwhelming! I would want and expect nothing less for my parents, and I have told Azalea's staff, in taking care of my parents, they have been taking care of my sometimes-anxious mind as well. It's always such a pleasure to visit such a warm and well-run community!

There was one nurse who was the bad apple out of the bunch. And I believe she was "let go" due to multiple complaints. According to my mother, the food was good as well. You didn't get a choice of what to eat, but everything was good. Especially, the ice cream (lol). Other than the appearance of the facility, everything we've experienced was above par. People also need to realize that, with all rehab facilities, the staff is cut down over the weekends. It's not the service. Things take longer because of the lack of help. However, that doesn't mean that you don't get the help that you need. My mother still received her PT, meds, food, etc., on time. I recommend Avalon for rehabilitation.

A previous experience with this facility was very positive and I had so much hope in this facility. Generally the staff is kind and attentive. Unfortunately, after three days....they were unable to manage his diabetes and rather than listen to me as a person who has been successfully managing his diabetes for the past 10 years....they are by policy and protocol required to refer to a house physician who is not an endocrinologist. Nursing staff must wait for the doctor to find the time to call them back while my husband's blood glucose just kept getting higher. It's sad that the nursing staff isn't allowed to use common sense and deliver a shot of insulin that is more than the physician has ordered. Our health care system is so very broken. I guess my advice would be....if your loved one is a diabetic....you might want to choose another facility.

I found myself trying to help an entire room of helpless people while the attendant ignored all of us. It was a nightmare there. My own grandmother died under their so called care. We found workers always quickly spoon feeding her flat on her back, that is how people choke. It was just mortifying. There needs to be an accountability from the start and supervision and caring people who want to work in that industry, not insensitive, unskilled people who just need a pay check.
