I came to see Kerwin Claiborne's show and his performance was good, but everything about this establishment has gone downhill since new management took over. When we arrived there was an elderly lady at the door scanning tickets. She looked confused about what her role was and the line was beginning to back up. We finally sat down to enjoy the night. We were told we had to place a 2 item minimum order from the restaurant/bar menu. You are required to pay up front for your order. With 30 mins left into the show, we/patrons still had not received our food but the owners of the club had a table at the front with their family and friends, all of them at the table had their food. They went back into the kitchen and got it themselves and comes out flaunting it in front of the customers. I found this to be distasteful and down right rude. How dare you eat in front of your paying customers? Then management told everyone that they will get a full refund for the food that was purchased and to give it up to 10 days to process. The show was on August 31st my food bill was $50.68 (8 wings, 8 shrimp, fries, Pepsi). I looked at my credit card statement and on September 3, 2024, I was charged $72.73. What a bunch of crooks. How dare you over charge my card and for food that I did not get. I will be having my Bank reverse this TODAY! Ive been to the Comedy House several times in the past. They have shows weekly, check the website. This past week I saw "The Christi Show", she was hilarious!!! She is on tour if you wanna get your laugh on, no cursing good time! Now a days you cant find clean stand up comedy, so this was well worth being out on a Thursday night. The show was sold out of course. She is professional and tells the truth in kind thoughtful way... The average don't want the truth. The facility is quite large, clean, and the staff is courteous. Check in is really easy, they take you to your seat. You will have a waiter assigned your area, be patient you are not the only table being waited on. Yes they could use a few more waiters, but the ones they have are working hard. Its pretty standard to purchase 2 items off the menu. The food was descent, but the mixed drinks are a no go. Next time I will stick to water or juice. Personally I would invest in a bartender for good bar service. People will pay for drinks if the service is on point, jus my two cents. No worries about parking, the lot is huge with descent lighting. They do have security inside. Ive never felt unsafe while seeing a show at the Comedy House. So yes, I love our Comedy House! My husband purchased tickets online for the Rodman Sept 14, 7 pm show. We were excited and looking forward to the show. We arrived early, a few of us in the parking lot waiting for event to start, however the venue was dark, except for a flashing sign display " under new management, will update soon." No one inside, doors locked, no notice on doors, or windows of shows' cancellation. In fact, it looked like the place went out of business! Looked up website, no info there. Just for kicks, decided to check Facebook page, notice on FB page indicated " weekend shows canceled, refund processed by ticket company. Sooo..no notice, no emails to ticket holders!! WTH? This is unprofessional! Why have to go to FB page to find out the show you spent money for is cancelled, while at the same time there's still ads on the club's page for upcoming shows!! How fast is this refund going to be processed? There seems to be no way to contact the so-called ticket company, and unless this is a scam by the club's owners, I feel like it should be their responsibility to make sure we all get our money back!!! This is a solid spot for all kinds of live entertainment, mostly comedy shows. I've been here several times and don't have many complaints. They run a pretty smooth local entertainment establishment. The staff is always friendly and courteous. They never get lost, like many other places that are busy all the time. They know how to handle all the customers they have at one time. They are always smiling and never pushy about placing orders before the shows, which you have to do. The only gripe I have about this place is overpriced food. The food would be ok for the price if they had more quality options. The food tastes like they bought it out of the grocer's freezer, put a hefty price tag on it, and sell it to the patrons. There is a two item minimum that you have to order each time you come and check out a show. I normally just get wings and a soda because I HATE their fries!!! My 3 year old cousin can make better fries than that. So I just stick to what I know. Also, gratuity is added to each bill, so if you want to leave your wait staff more that's up to you, but they make pretty good either way it goes. If this place took the quality of their food up a notch, I wouldn't have a problem with the food. I give them a pass on the food because a lot of the times they offer free or discounted tickets to the shows. A very run down building. Reeks of stale cigarette smoke. The tables were gross to touch, condiment bottles greasy and all empty. Bathrooms were dirty and not maintained. From what I can see the sanitation practices in the kitchen we're not that great. I ordered a Hamburger. Received it fairly quickly. However it gave me food poisoning. This experience was ok ! We saw Jess hilarious who had a delayed show. Don't know what the reason was but it was over an hour wait which wasn't what I was expecting . Her acts before her was mediocre especially the white guy who was trying to be funny but came off racist with his comments . Jess was funny but it took to long for her to come out . The wait in the lobby was terrible as there was no air circulation and everyone was gathered around . Ticket prices for the show were decent. The show itself was fantastic. The atmosphere was pretty good. Sadly, their "2 item minimum" excludes non-alcoholic beverages. We had two people in our party that don't drink, and are both on strict diets. The menu doesn't offer any "healthy" selections. Unfortunately we had to pay the surcharge for those two. An alternative option would have been appreciated. It would have been nice to have been able to find a somewhat healthy option and get some non-alcoholic options included in the two item minimum. As far as the menu selection, it would have also been nice to find an actual website for this establishment to see the menu choices and costs. We had no idea they even served dinner food. Let alone what type of food was served in general. We had gone to dinner before the show and had no clue food was even offered. The website associated with this establishment is very "round about" and never lands on an actual website with info about the club itself. That said, we had a great time. This is my 3rd time visiting The Comedy House. I went with a group of friends. If I could give a separate score for the comedian, Lavell Crawford would get 10 stars! He was beyond hilarious. We practically laughed the whole time. He even began his set by referencing the SC heat (Yes, it's September and still hot!). The opening acts were good as well. However, I gave the establishment itself three stars for a few reasons: It was hot in there. Lavell even referenced it in his set and referred to building as a bingo hall. Then the food and drinks were over priced. The fried mushrooms I ordered had way too much breading and it was huge, whole mushrooms, and they were cold. My shrimp and fries were good, as well as the pina colada. There's a two item minimum per person, so they make sure you order something! Our waitress was pretty good. We had eaten at Ruth Chris's restaurant prior to this event so I did not try any food. The couples next to us said it was delicious! To be honest my time would've been better spent driving to Atlanta....First off, I called 4 or 5 days ahead to buy my ticket because you can't purchase online anymore. I originally called and the person (Shayla) who answered quoted me $27 for a table. I wanted to purchase a full table so that me and my guest would not have to be seated next to people we don't know. I intended on purchasing a 4 seater, the rep recommended a 2 seater and said she would give me a table up front. Okay cool. I told her I would call back to pay. I called back like 15 mins later and no answer - phone just rings. They were open and the show doesn't start til 7 so I was very confused why no one wasn't answering. Called back 5 times- no answer. Finally got them to answer and the young lady wrote down my card info and quoted me $17 and told me she would call me back once she processed the payment. (I should've been freaked out at this point because why would you write my card info down?? but I tried to be understanding) she didn't inform me that she was writing my information down when she asked for it. I thought she was taking my card info to enter me into the system and charge me. After getting my full card number, expiration date and security code she tells me "I'm new and don't know how to access the system yet so I just wrote everything down and I'll call you back later". WHAT? If you had told me that before I gave you all of my information I WOULD NOT have. That's bad business I should've ran away at that point but I really wanted to see this show... Comedy House please tell your employees that writing down someone's full card info is bad business. It could put your business at risk for fraudulent transactions. I say this because when the young lady called me back and actually processed the payment it was for $14. The next day is when I noticed the charge for $14 and I'm like hmm this doesn't look right because she quoted me $17. She said it would $5 for each ticket and $7 service charge for paying over the phone. I called back for 2 days straight (12 calls in total) before someone finally answered. Guess what? They had no record of me booking a table but after a few minutes of searching they were able to locate my card number and name written down on a piece of paper. That freaked me out let me just be honest because anyone could have access to my full card info at that point. What type of business is this?! It doesn't get better from there. Finally able to get this rectified and got a table number- still no confirmation of my payment at that point but I was so frustrated I didn't even care by the time. We arrived at the show at 9pm - seated by 9:30. Server came to our table and asked what we wanted to eat/drink. I asked if they sold Sangrias. It took her an hour to "go check". By the time she came back to get our order and inform me that they don't sell Sangrias the show was already started. We just ordered some fries and a drink. Drinks came out, no fries. I had to flag a male server down (GREAT SERVER) to grab the fries which he brought out very quickly. I'm a server- can tell when something has been sitting in a warmer instead of being taken out. Fries were old and not that great. Openers came out by 10 and the show was over by 12. All in all... I would never return. First of all - if you are going to require customers purchase tickets by phone you should make your phone lines available for customers to do so. When I expressed this to the person I was speaking to on the phone she said we could come in a purchase tickets. This location is an hour and a half from my house. Am I expected to drive 3 hours to spend $17 on tickets? That's insane. I heard great reviews about this place but obviously those reviews were pre COVID. My sister and I visited the comedy house tonight and we had a bad experience with another guest. The guest was upset because she could not see the comedian after I sat in front of her. I moved my chair so she could see; that was not good enough so she kicked my chair repeatedly like a damn child until I told her to stop kicking it. She told me to move my chair over but I could not because it was already up against the table. The ghetto chick then put her hands in my face when she was confronted about kicking my chair. The event security offered her and her date another seat but she refused to move. The guy that she was with apologized for the ghetto girls behavior. This incident made me so upset, she didn't know that my sister and I had lost our Mom last year, we just came from the graveyard today after having attended a memorial. I never had such bad taste bud in my food. I told server #15 on 06/11/17 had no concern for asking if I wanted something else or take it off my ticket. Mr. David Whigham Sr, (now deceased), founded this establishment over 12 years ago. It was always a welcoming bunch of people that made you feel like family. The food was good. It was priced fairly. The drinks as well were good. They always brought in notable comedians and catered to local talent as well. They gave several local comedians their start on the bigger stage. Covid hit and the silent partner bought out the family and brought in his own group of workers/managers, BIG MISTAKE! Not keeping on the Whigham family members who knew the business and the artists well, has proven to be a miscalculation. The previous active owners also offered discounts to loyal patrons as well. We saw Mike Epps on 6/8 and he was great. As far as the comedy club, it was packed! We hated the requirement to buy at least 2 food or drink items. The food and drinks are expensive and not very tasty (nachos were very salty, wings had no flavor, & the mixed drinks are very strong). Another thing we disliked was that 15% gratuity was included in the ticket yet once we paid, the receipt had another area to include a tip. Luckily we printed our tickets ahead of time that stated gratuity would be included. I don't think many people knew this so they ended up tipping twice. The "no heckling" rule is not enforced very well as 2 women were constantly interrupting the show. The location was not in the safest neighborhood and parking was limited. The General Manager needs a lesson in customer service. He only cares about the 2 item minimum; even if it is their fault. You are forced to pay a 15% gratuity even if your service is well below quality. The Deputy Sheriffs they employ check your receipts to ensure compliance. This is not a great customer experience.
