First off thank you Nicole W. for reminding me about this great FREE! publication that I now miss…read moreand want to read again. I picked it up every thursday at myu local grocery stores but also at bookstores, bars or restaurants downtown. Its written well, easygoing and fun, not too stuffy, like I like my newspapers, covering any and everything going on in the area that week. Always a good inspiration for weekend fun ideas, great paper!

I'm a big fan of Columbus Alive. It seems like you see the crew out everywhere, and everyone there…read moreis so young. They give interns a shot, and they hire young writers. It's tough finding a good gig like this when you're young. Kudos to Alive for taking chances on young talent. That aside, Alive is a good read too. The staff seems to be up on all the current events. I like that they cover entertainment, fashions, food, everything every week. My favorite section is the weekly question, which is answered by the staff and by people on the street. The questions are usually fairly bizarre and have hilarious answers. This week: What's your favorite Italian export? Someone answered 'Giada De Laurentiis.' Agreed! I was once caught by the team and asked where the worst place to go for a first date; I said the cemetery and made it into print! Celebrity status? Maybe not, but it was fun. My favorite issue of the year is the Best of Columbus. Everyone in the city votes on all their favorite stuff from best bathroom and best billboard ad to best gyro and best place for live jazz. This issue makes a terrific to-do list.

For over twenty…read moreyears they've been pumping out detailed articles with corresponding pictures telling about every new business, every change in leadership, every district discussion, every everything. If you want to be in the know about the Short North, read the Gazette. Even better, if you need to go back in time to answer a question, use the Gazette's website. (Or just use it for fun; you'll learn a lot of interesting things.) The website has all the old articles, and though they're not 100% accurate, they're usually pretty close. Even when you do a Google search, the Gazette usually pops up between the first and third spot with an article. The website also has a great A-Z directory of businesses in the district. It's mostly up-to-date, and I like that they keep the addresses of old businesses on there for quite a while too or the old locations if a business moves. Sometimes that stuff comes in handy. The only bad things about the website are that the photos and info on the homepage don't change very often and the site itself has some pretty shoddy layout, but when you have a small staff, you don't have much time to focus your energy on a website. The hardcopy publication comes out once a month. I like the hardcopy print better just because I like being able to hold something tangible in my hands. I even like getting a little newsprint on me from time to time. But the web/hardcopy combo is helpful in many situations.

In the last few years, the quality of the local reporting, the consistent very left leaning editorials and reliance on dated filler articles from the AP have really impacted for the worse. Their coverage of the Trump administration is so awful and one sided. I have not read a single positive story involving the President since he took office. I am not his biggest fan either. Several of their recent stories, such as the family murdered in Southeast Ohio were written so poorly with misplaced pronouns that I had to read the story several times. I simply decided that I will rely on other papers such as the Wall Street Journal. The Journal cost more, but delivers more value. It's a shame the Dispatch has decided to go left, cut costs, and employ mediocre editing. Cities need local newspapers to keep politicians in check, report news fairly and share various viewpoints so the reader can be informed. Unfortunately, The Columbus Dispatch, much like the New York Times has decided in recent years to pick a side. If I wanted that, I would tune into Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC for free.

While trying to cancel I was told basically tough luck, your subscription can't be canceled until next year and I'm stuck with a charge of $59.99. I was never given a renewal notice or I would have canceled well before the renewal date. Very predatory practice on the Dispatch's part

While the shop is closed, their online site is active and packed full of goodies to peruse. They have an April promocode available at the top of the site for your order, and you can do free pick up at the Easton location, if you'd like. I opted to pay for shipping and it was hand delivered, carefully packed, a few days after I placed the order, with a thank you note and small American flag included - nice touches. If you haven't had the opportunity to visit Celebrate Local before, I highly recommend you do so once it reopens, but in the meantime, check out their site to find Ohio apparel for babies, kids, and adults, jewelry, food items like sauces, snacks, coffee and tea, homegoods, bath/hair products, and fun things for your pets! It's a great option for gifts too - quite a bit of my virtual visit was dedicated to picking out just the right gift options and the venture was most successful. Celebrate Local is always a great choice for your Columbus and Ohio needs (and things you didn't know you needed!)

It's filled to the brim with locally made items, everything from food to clothing, home decor, jewelry, wine, and more. It's definitely a great place to shop for a thoughtful gift. You can certainly find something special here. On my last visit I walked out with a delicious sugar cookie and a jar of elderberry jam, both made right here in Columbus! The staff here is very informed on the items in the store and where they come from. They can also fill you in on the stories behind them, which is very cool. If you haven't stopped in for a visit, I suggest you make it a priority.
