West Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Applebee's, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…read more.. 10. Easy access from the interstate highways, downtown, route 93, rural, urban, and suburban. 9. Ample parking with plenty of handicapped accessibility. As a disabled veteran, I truly appreciate this consideration. 8. Comfortable seating according to guest preferences--booths, tables with pull-in chairs, and bar stools. Accommodating all sizes of people. The seating and tables align with the beautiful decor throughout this establishment. 7. CLEAN restrooms!! What more can I say about this? 6. Local nostalgic decor to stir up great memories of Penn State Highacres, Angela Park, Eckley Miner's Village, and more. I remember ferris wheels at several local amusement parks and fairs, like the ferris wheel photo mural on one wall. Days spent on campus at Highacres as a student, community member, diehard Nittany Lions fan, and daughter of a dedicated Penn State employee (my Dad). We sat in front of the miners' photo mural, and think about my hard-working maternal grandfather who labored in Schuylkill County anthracite coal mines. 5. Specials. Special creepy (think gummy eyeball in your drink) adult beverages around Halloween. Dollaritas. Happy Hour for late-night munching and thirst-quenching. Today's salute to veterans was extra-special. Gift card specials, too. Staff are knowledgeable. 4. Well-stocked bar. Mom had a tasty Manhattan cocktail, I enjoyed a chardonnay spritzer. If you like fruity drinks, there are plenty of alcohol-laden and alcohol-free options. Frozen and on-the-rocks margaritas are super. This location's bartender--Albert--created our adult beverages, and they were PERFECT! 3. Military recognition. Most recently (tonight!), Veteran's Day free meal, with various options from a special menu. Choices included entrees of Asian salad, 6 ounce sirloin steak, breaded shrimp, cheeseburger, chicken fingers, and more. 2. Excellent food. We love the artichoke dip. Just the right balance of ingredients, tortilla chips, and tomato salsa to start our dining experience. Mom loved her medium-rare sirloin accompanied by broccoli and mashed potatoes. I savored crispy shrimp, fresh-cut seasoned fries, and chunky Cole slaw. We had enough for to-go containers. As a big supporter of reuse, reduce (waste), repurpose, and recycle, thank you for the plastic carryout containers. The clear lid eases selection of mine versus Mom's leftovers, although we'll likely share! The carryout brown paper bag is the right size and has appropriate length, sturdy carrying straps. 1. The TEAM that comprises West Hazleton Applebee's! You are super-duper! While you amply saluted veterans tonight, we salute you for making our visit top-notch! Our server, Ashley, is so personable, helpful, and efficient. Albert makes terrific beverages. Julie is such a warm, welcoming hostess who greets all visitors. Manager on duty Erica is professional and seeks feedback from customers. Thank you for an outstanding visit to our neighborhood Applebee's!! Keep up the great work! We'll return soon.

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center - Cancer SUCKS!

Please bear with me. I'm not a holy roller in your face religious zealot. But what I witnessed this…read moreweekend happened by the grace of God. The staff at Hershey medical system were blessed with the skills to save my mom. My mother had a major stroke on Saturday. She had a complete blockage in the area controlling speech and movement on her right side. She arrived at Hershey able to understand but unable to communicate. She couldn't lift her arms. She literally was scared to death. Likewise, my dad, who witnessed everything, was panicking. When we got the call, we threw some stuff in a suitcase and drove all night covering over 800 miles to get there as soon as we could. When we arrived, we went directly to the hospital. Of course I had updates from my family, but I still wasn't sure what I would see when I walked into her room in the NICU. The moment I stepped over that threshold, I knew I still had my mom. Not mom with a new normal, but MY mom. How did I know? She was complaining about something. Yep, that's my mom, bless her heart. (And I mean that in a true southern way!) I've already established my belief in divine intervention, but it was the excellent staff at Hershey that actually performed the miracle. The moment mom crossed the ER threshold, she was hit by a whirlwind of activity. Time is critical for a stroke patient. Within the first 1/2 hour, they confirmed the stroke and had a specialist paged. Less than two hours from getting wheeled in into the ER by the EMTs, she was in recovery from surgery. The surgery was delicate (as are all brain surgeries, of course). This particular surgery takes advanced skills - her neurologist said that even they revere these surgeons. The doctor said that they got the entire clot but didn't know her prognosis. He did say that recovery was going to be slow. The wonderful care didn't stop in the ER and OR. The nurses and support staff were second to none. Not only was mom well cared for, we were also recipients of the helpfulness and kindness of the staff. We were kept abreast of every test and procedure. They made sure that the doctor came by while we were there - keeping us tightly in the loop. We had pertinent phone numbers so we could always speak with her nurse. They helped us set up her portal (clear cookies before enrolling). Mom was a nurse so she has exceptionally high standards for nursing care. Even she was impressed. There were a couple of hiccups. The food was awful. I wouldn't have eaten it either. They did not do a very good job at helping her with hygiene. She said she had a bed bath but whatever they did, sure didn't do what was intended. In 5 days, she had only received 1 bath. Please be aware that the medical center is HUGE and you will most likely have quite a trek to the room. Seriously, after the first day, I traded my cute sandals for my tennis shoes. There are a couple of places inside to eat but we didn't try them. A very busy Starbucks is in the lobby. Us fellow Penn Staters feel especially at home with the replica of our beloved Nittany Lion sculpture in the rotunda. A life size replica of our mascot sits on an outside bench just begging for a photo shoot. If I ever need urgent medical care while in town visiting, there will be absolutely no question on where I'll go. Hershey Medical Center. It's undoubtedly one of the best. And, to the staff - thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my mom. Bless you all.

It is well maintained, cleaned, and up kept. The ER is a little slow if you come in on a Saturday, but the staff (on all aspects/positions) are outgoing, knowledgeable, and wanting to educate you on what they are doing/have done and the options that you have. With that said, the care is exceptional. The nurse staff is beyond amazing! The care was contributions, present, and working to provided the best care available!! Going to the hospital is NEVER easy and not something anyone looks forward to, but I assure you that you are in good hands here!!
