We stopped by Camp Angelos near Dabney State park on the Sandy River since my friends are planning…read morea wedding there. It looks like a great outdoor location. In fact, it's booked eleven months in advance on weekends already. (If you're interested it's worth a call to see if someone cancelled.) I love their idea to have a long weekend wedding. With people traveling from afar for the wedding, why spend one night together. Why not spend a whole weekend together? There are hotels nearby in Troutdale 10 minutes away for older family members that can't camp or those that don't care for camping. Within a thirty minute drive are lots of hikes and waterfalls or downtown Portland for visitors to explore. There are numerous spots that overlook the Sandy River and the beach on the river has a pavilion with a giant fire pit and warming log ovens. My friends are planning a whole pig roast here. Up at the main lodge is the big hall with a hidden kitchen area. It has high wood beam framed ceilings with tall windows. It also has a nice back deck for enjoying the fresh air and cocktails. Behind the lodge is an outdoor pizza oven pavilion next to a charming grape arbor. I can't wait to use that! To the side of the lodge is a cute fishing pond fed by a natural waterfall with a gazebo. It's undergoing renovations right now, but will be fantastic when finished. The gazebo is apparently an awesome spot to put the bar so adults can mingle and relax away from where the kids like to cavort. In front of the lodge is a large lawn edged with giant cyprus trees, perfect for large ceremonies. There are also a couple of other nice locations along the river or in a meadow for smaller ceremonies. There's so many great spots for wedding photos, the photographer will go crazy: the grand porch, the waterfall, the grape arbor with twinkle lights, the gazebo and pond, riverside on the beach, at the caboose, or, heck, even shooting on the archery court. We will be decorating with twinkle lights near outlets, candles in mason jars hung in the trees, banners, garlands, and flowers, just enough to make the natural setting pop. Oh, and we will whip up a special flag out of some nylon and paint for the flag pole. There's basketball, archery, baseball, volleyball/badminton locations. I think it may be bring your own equipment or rent it though. I will find out and post an update. There seems to be good hiking through the fern forest along the Sandy. There's two classrooms where day care will be hosted by family friends over the weekend in case parents want to adventure. Other than the wedding day, time will be spent larking about the property perhaps even doing a scavenger hunt. Camp-style bunk-bed cabins can hold 144 guests. It's communal bathrooms, camp style, but the maintenance is good. There's a few rooms in the main lodge with an extra entrance of their own. Also, a caboose with beds is tucked in the forest by the archery range. If an arrow goes awry, the steel will protect you. You are also welcome to pitch tents where you like. They also just put in new mattresses on all the beds. It's going to be an awesome camp adventure wedding weekend. Going old school for the wedding!

My husband and I found Red Barn online in November/December of 2019. We were aiming for an outdoor…read moreFall wedding, and the property for Red Barn was absolutely beautiful from the accommodations, the scenery of the surrounding forest, to the water, the gardens, and of course, the barn itself. We reached out and scheduled a visit with the coordinator. The day of the visit we arrived, the coordinator had forgotten, but said we could walk around the site. It was no big deal, the day was kind of gray, but we could get a sense of what the property was, so we decided to go forward. We did have another meeting, and signed the contract for September 13th. A couple months later, Covid hit, and we were in limbo about the wedding and evolving government regulations. However, we kept informed of the changes and adapted as needed, they were flexible and we were comfortable moving forward together. So far, pretty good experience, you might be wondering why the low rating, but the turn happened a month leading up to the date. All of our vendors were booked and deposits all made. We had paid Red Barn ~$4500. The first issue was that the in-house catering was no longer available, but we weren't made aware of the fact. We frantically searched for another catering, and were fortunate enough to find Cheryl's on 12th. So, again, no big deal really, just momentary panic. Mon Sept 7th, however, issues started escalating. The huge Riverside fire was choking half the state, and with an outside venue, we were getting extremely concerned that this was becoming an impossibility. Thur Sept 10th, the venue was in level 3 evacuation, our house was in level 2. Family was in the process of arriving from out of state, or traveling from around Oregon. We reach out and they say that maybe we can reschedule, or just see how things turn out. Our vendors started calling. The catering would not travel to Oregon City, nor would the bartender, the florist, the baker, or the DJ. None of the vendors were willing to put their employees' health at risk to fulfill the business, and neither were we. So we changed venues to SE Portland. One indoors with heavy ventilation. We made it work, our vendors could still do business in a nice area, and our guests didn't spend a lot of money and time making it out to our wedding for nothing. We had heard nothing from Red Barn after the text mentioned above. Here's where things soured greatly: My husband reached out to Red Barn a few days after the wedding asking for a refund, and offered to pay ~$540 for their time of the meetings. There was a lot of back and forth. After months of negotiation, they said they would give back 50%, but with small payments over a period of time. That negotiation fell through, and Red Barn said they would only give back the deposit ($500). My husband is a realtor and at the time had a client in Tillamook. He spent over 40 hours working with the client, found them a house, got it under contract, and in the end, the clients backed out. He was entitled to his commission (around $5500), but he didn't want to put his clients in a bad position, understood that it is part of business, and moved on. He relayed this to Red Barn, and they stated they were much like realtors in that they do all this work in preparation for a wedding, so they are entitled to the money. Their communication was often condescending, talking about how lenient they were being with us, how generous they had been with their offers in the negotiation (i.e. "we don't generally offer this, but...") What they were particularly insistent upon, was that the wedding could've been held at their venue. That there was no reason for us to even cancel in the first place (but, as they stated numerous times, "it was your right to make a different decision"), despite the repeated response that literally no vendors were going to be there. We weren't going to put our guests, our vendors, or their employees in that situation. The air quality was at the most hazardous level, and still in evacuation. Over a year later, they responded with, "we even purchased a powerful air filter, the air in the barn was better than our own house." Knowledge we were never offered at any point. However, this is a barn. With wedding traffic, of guests, vendors, employees, no insulation, slim walls, it would be impossible. Our vendors would not be in attendance, and everyone would be subjected to some of the highest levels of air pollutants with its proximity to the fires. In difficult times, we are presented with people's true character. The venue is lovely, the coordinator was nice enough, and we never actually met the owners. The odds of another pandemic and wildfires happening to sabotage your wedding day are indeed nearly zero, but going through it ourselves, we discovered that the owners of Red Barn have one priority above all else, where our vendors' owners did not: Profit over people. And apathy for an incredibly challenging situation.

My daughter wanted a smaller party, with herself and 4 guests and they were very accommodating. We chose the "dazzling davinci" package, which includes a full size picture. When we arrived for the party, I informed that we had only had 2 people confirmed to attend, and one was going to be late (softball picture day, apparently). The staff said this was no problem, and said we could start as they came in. My daughter and her first guest got started, but while a staff sat and gave step by step to the friend, my daughter was given starter instructions and I had to prompt not once or twice but many times for the next steps. The third guest arrived shortly after and a second staff sat with her, again giving step by step instructions while my daughter, the birthday girl, was left hanging. This was quite frustrating, but my kid took it in stride. A third guest arrived when our time was almost up, so while I understand she couldn't complete a whole picture, we were told that she could free paint but they were out of full size paper (which of course, we had paid for! ) . The package was also supposed to include nail art (or glass coloring), which they did not do. We were supposed to have had a reserved party area for 2 hours, but another party was scheduled to overlap ours which was incredibly awkward, so we rushed through cupcakes and snacks, etc. The "deluxe" party favor included 3 dumdum lollipops, a hard candy, a cheap plastic ring and a tiny plastic wand. They did accomodate face paintings for the late guests, which was nice. However, I was disappointed in their uneven distribution of attention, and running out of the supplies we had paid for. Over all, I likely won't reccomend a party here.

It isn't just an art class -- it's a warm, welcoming space where you feel instantly at ease, supported, and encouraged to simply be yourself. From the moment you walk in, any fear of "not being creative enough" quietly melts away. The instructor gently guides you through each step with patience and kindness, making the process feel approachable, joyful, and almost meditative.
