Really terrible customer service. Whiskey lottery was posted to end on 12/8. Went on 12/8 and told it already closed at 11am. Why close at a random time? This is a very well run business. Plenty of selection of wine, liquor, and beer. The bourbon selection is probably the best in the area, and Tim is an expert. Beer selection is very good also. Colonial Spirits is on its way to doing for the liquor store (almost) what Kimball's has done for the ice cream stand. No, I don't mean that Colonial Spirits will open a petting zoo, a chip'n'putt golf course, or a corporate event area anytime soon... but they're a lot more than just a regular package store. First of all, the selection is great. Of everything. There is a very large selection of refrigerated beer, but the selection of international beers and unrefrigerated beers by the case is staggering. Ok, bad choice of words, but the selection is "big". "Really big". There are contests. Multiple tastings per week. Beer tastings, wine tastings, even vodka tastings. And they're good! I took some pictures during the NCAA Final Four (basketball) playoffs, and they had their own beer final four contest that you could participate in. Just for fun. You can also get a plastic card with each visit that enables you to conduct a self-guided tasting from a couple of machines that dispense taster-size mini-shots into your wine glass. Then there's a wide screen TV that shows entertaining things while all this is happening so you feel right at home. Check out some of my pictures and you'll see what the tasting area looks like. The prices are excellent, the sales good, and there are discounts if you buy in volume. *maybe* you could save a few dollars here or there by going to Costco or some other place with large boxes and no concept of "fun", but you wouldn't save very much, and you wouldn't have the selection. For example, I have observed that Chimay blue is a little cheaper at Costco, so if you happen to want Chimay blue (it happens to be one of my favorites), and Costco isn't out of your way, then fine. But if you want nearly anything else from the hundreds and hundreds of beers that Colonial Spirits stocks, then you'll probably want to go here. I've also found the staff to be friendly and helpful. This spirits store in a small shopping area in Acton Massachusetts is a real gem. Tim is the manager and always cheerful. His staff is very knowledgeable. I usually go in for wines, and the ones they have are vast from all over the world. My latest purchase was from South Africa: a women-owned company called HER. Colonial had several varietals in that label. They also have an amazing assortment of beers. I know they have wine tastings, but I have never been to one. Their ad in our free weekly circular always has unusual wines. A very good & friendly/helpful place to expand your palate! read more

What a deceptive company!! They list items on their website with a price that *appears* to be the price of the item. Then below it they show an "add to cart" button. In fine print they say that the very first price you see is NOT the price of the item but only represents a 25% deposit on the item. They clearly did this on purpose to make it seem like you are buying an item for a much cheaper price than you actually are. I have been buying things online for years (alcohol as well) with thousands of purchases, and I have never seen something like this before. So naturally I canceled the item (within minutes of ordering) when I realized the advertised price was not the actual price. Then the owner said I had to pay a 10% cancellation fee!! Are you kidding me? I have had hundreds of online orders canceled and never not gotten my full purchase price back. He said the 10% was to cover his credit card transaction fees. There is no cc fee that is 10%! I'm pretty sure what they are doing is illegal. I will never shop here again. read more

Yay! I can say after a two and half year hiatus from Massachusetts Colonial Spirits is still one of my favorite liquor store in the area. Oh the wine. Aisle after aisles of choices. And the by bottle # discount? Buy more save more.... AND I guess I'm buying a case. But really the selection is top notch. Another favorite fact about the store is the sale bottles are often good wines at a decent price (rare combo, although FYI not counted towards the bottle # for the discount). But the fun doesn't end there... Want a really obscure Venezuelan rum so you can impress a special friend? They have it! BTW it's called Aniversario, and it's delicious. I recently went to this liquor store for a small bottle of Grey Goose vodka. As I'm looking behind the staff woman at the check out line to the smaller bottles she barks at me "Do you need help?" and I tell her no thank you, that I'm just looking for a small bottle of Grey Goose. The woman gave me a nasty look and immediately barked "You need an ID." Well, no kidding. I'm in a liquor store. I appear young, but I am definetly over the legal drinking age. To top it all off, I had dyed my hair a completely different color 2 weeks prior to making this visit so she was grilling me hard. She then proceeded to give me a bunch of attitude at check out. I questioned the price of the bottle as the labels were incorrect under the bottles on the shelf. She said "It IS Gray Goose hunny." I ain't your hunny... I should've left the damn vodka on the counter and went somewhere else but I just wanted to get my errand done and get to where I was going. I thought the store was very big and had a huge selection but this staff member needs to gain some social skills and a few lessons on customer service. She could have used her own dye job too if you ask me.... read more

They got this automatic wine sampler in the wine section that runs off a card they give you at the counter, "fo free" aannnd you don't have to make awkward wine chit chat with the a person handing out samples . You get four or 5 samples of what ever they have selected that day. Also they have all great selection of both high and low end spirits, what ever floats your boat. read more

Hands down, the best liquor store I've ever been to. I can mainly only speak to their beer selection, which even beats the new, local, dedicated craft beer stores. Their liquor selection is great (everything from Colonial branded to top shelf), and their wine selection and frequent specials are great. To other comments; I hardly think the lack of shot glasses warrants a three-star review and I'd prefer my liquor store focus on liquor. Second, having lived in NH for several years, I can say that Colonials prices are very competitive. The fact that profits go to local individuals and not the only State government that can't figure out how to implement EZ-Pass lanes is only a huge added perk. Overall, this is one of the best stores I've ever shopped at, let alone liquor stores. If you're a beer geek like me, it's worth the trip. If you have something specific in mind, just call - they've special ordered a lot of stuff for me, even if it's just a 6-pack of a newly released craft beer. read more

So I'm going to have to upgrade them to 4 starts for their selection although their staff still could use a lot of improvement. I stopped in here as I was driving by to see if they had any new beers in stock to pick up which they did. Then I was just browsing the liquor section and noticed that they did in fact carry Creme de Violet I had been looking for the other day. I had called them on the phone and the person who answered told me they didn't carry it. So if they could just get more helpful staff this place could totally be a 5 star liquor store. read more

Quite the busty selection of beer, liquor, and wine. I mostly stick to the beer, which they have a mondo selection of everything from the everyday staples, to domestic crafts, and hard-to-find imports. I've done some wine shopping here as well, and a gentleman assisted me, which was helpful since I was buying for someone else who was an avid wine consumer. Being in the check-out line is always a grand time due to the excessive carding techniques they go through. Add in the on-duty police officer standing close by to help to make you feel as though you are doing something wrong, maybe even a tad-bit illegal...kinda puts the fun back into buying alcohol again! read more

Note, this is totally beer biased, I haven't bought much else there. The selection is pretty stupendous. I don't think I've walked in there and not found what I have wanted yet. I order my 1/6bl kegs from Tim, the Beer Manager there - a very, very good guy. There's another beer guy who is nothing short of surly, so look for Tim if you have questions. Wine/liquor selection is pretty huge, but I have not shopped them much so no real comment. There is a very cool wine sampling bar in-store, which will likely earn them that 5th star when I get some time to hang out. ** Update - full on 5 stars. A little out of the way for me, but I'm always willing to drive a little extra if the destination has a good wine selection. The store is quite large and has a very good selection indeed. One thing that I liked is that there is always a quantity discount on wines starting with as few as 6 bottles (but, discount doesn't apply to specials). The selection and the discount made it easy to pick out a case of quality wines and keep the price at around $10/bottle! If you don't know what to choose, there is some (but not a lot) of information available in the aisles and a helpful staff is also ready to help. The beer selection in the back is also quite good. I'll likely make another trip back out to try a few different beers in the near future. Only thing I'll do differently this time is not try to go down Rt 2 at 5pm - traffic is terrible! read more

This package store has quite a selection and is one of the largest stores in MA. The only one bigger that I've been to is Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge. Wine and beer selections are incredible and the liquor selection is up there too. I was a little disappointed when they stopped ordering a mead that I am really into though. They have also lost a couple of really great staff members over the past year. My go to person for scotch no longer works there which is a total downer since I relied on him for suggestions for my scotch drinking friends. Altogether this is a really great place for selection and the staff is quite knowledgeable. read more

Party time, lots of hard liquor, but no shot glasses. We were pretty embarrassed. I thought we had a few, but guess not. We just used a liter measure ;-) The following week, when I was already going to be in Acton, I headed to Colonial Spirits to see if they had any. I remember this store when it was a small liquor store further down the street, and I came here when my daughter was 4. This freestanding location has plenty of parking and always seems busy. I've never purchased anything here (I shop at the liquor store in tax-free New Hampshire instead), but they seem to have a good selection of wine and beer. What they didn't have, however, is a shot glass. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that not having a shot glass at a liquor store is like not having chocolate at a candy store. This is my favorite liquor store to go to for everything alcoholic. It's large enough that I can enjoy spending some free time just going up and down the aisles checking out anything new that I may be interested in. I've just picked out some pretty good organic beer and some other standby's for a party my childhood friends and I throw for ourselves and our families every year. I also picked out the champagne to celebrate New Year's with while I was at there. There are lots of parking and I like the spaciousness such that I'm hardly bumping into another customer when I'm taking my time looking. This is my favorite package store in the area. I'm mostly a beer drinker and this store carries many different beers, a bunch that I think are local brews. I'm not always in the mood for the same old thing and it's fun to try something I've never heard of. They also have a nice large selection of liquor and wine, but since I'm not a wine drinker I'm not sure exactly the types they carry. There is a nice little area with a self serve wine sampler, a TV and a few seats. This is the best place around to return bottles and cans as there is a bottle return room with 10 machines, a counter in front of the machines to put your bag on and there is an attendant for the room to empty full machines and fix jams. The staff has always been friendly and helpful and the store itself is nice and always clean. read more

Unfortunately, "average" was invented for "stellar in one respect, bouts of incompetence in another." Great wine and beer selection. Helpful wine manager Nic (1 of the two wine manager Nics) when I didn't know what wines I wanted for my party. Helped me buy 3 cases of wine, and met my needs for good and crowd-pleasing wines at a reasonable budget. I liked 3 of 4 of his choices a lot, and 1, per my wife, was "the best wine she's ever had". Patrick had my keg of Sam Adams beer ready in the cooler days before the party. BUT they caused a near disaster through incompetence. Ten minutes before our party for 100, we try to tap the keg. Had it settled and iced for 4 hours ahead of time, all set to go. 4 of us experienced guys tried for 15 minutes. Man did we sweat, literally and figuratively, as guests began to arrive, the band began to play, and we had no beer! Called Colonial for help, and while willing talk about it, (occasionally placing me on hold) they were of no help. They had given me the WRONG TAP for my keg and it would not work. My buddy went out to a different liquor store and got the right tap, which worked like a charm, and saved my @$$. Thanks buddy, NO THANKS Colonial... You are a BEER store, and I asked you beforehand about how to use this tap, to make SURE I knew how, and you still screwed up! Yeah I am a little peeved... Post Mortem: Tim the Beer manager was very apologetic and nice, refunded the tap rental fee the other beer store charged me, and gave me a $10 discount on my keg. big whoop ... read more

The Land of the Living Dead! On March 12, I spoke with Tim, the President about a specific wine that I wished to purchase. I also asked him to set a side a case of the same wine as I would come in the following day to purchase that case as well as some other wines. He told me that I should ask for Brett, who would be running the store on March 13th When I first arrived in the store on 3/13, I did not see any store employees and I had to do a minor search before I found two lady cashiers standing calmly behind their counters at the other end of the shop. I therefore asked for Brett and the older woman seemed rather surprised and bent out of shape that I asked for anyone by name and she starting dialing some numbers. I therefore explained that I had some wine set aside and since no one seemed to be picking the phone I asked if Brett was not yet in the store. I think the woman finally made contact with someone because a few minutes later two men came down with two cases of wine. The older of two (who wasn't Brett) was introduced as the wine specialist and so I also asked him about tasting notes of the special on display (Tire Bouchon). He read the information at the display and described that it was from the Rhone area (something that I already knew). I also asked him about the Catalonian wine Copos Nature, and he took me to the aisle where he thought the Catalonian Wine was displayed, and said that this was all that he had from that region, I pulled up the store's website on my phone and showed him information about the wine. Ah, he said, this is our special and took me to the same display that I had previously asked him about, namely the Tire Bouchon! So I had to stress one more time that this display had a French Wine and I was looking for the Catalonian wine! By this time Brett came down and I explained the situation to him and he seemed rather surprised that I had not received the right help so far. He therefore contacted someone called Nick a couple of times before all my questions were answered. So I finally proceeded to the check out and discovered that in addition to the case of Chateau de Fontenille that I had ordered that there was another case of Grgich Hills that was also waiting for pick up, under my name! I then had to explain to the older lady that this was yet another mix-up. She then started ringing the wines through and seemed terribly confused when she thought that there were thirteen bottles of a certain varietal when there were only a dozen! She then tried desperately to squeeze twelve other bottles into a case that was clearly not big enough. Fortunately Brett stepped in one more time and not only helped to find the appropriate sized box but also repaired a mistake with the volume discount on their computer system. I had traveled all the way from Boston to purchase these wines for the upcoming Easter holiday, and quite honestly, this wasn't the sort of experience I expected after speaking with Tim the previous day. I also needed to get some white wines, but was so disgusted that I decided to take my business elsewhere. Yes, they do seem to have a large selection, but this rather clueless "deer in headlights" display was, shall we say, entirely underwhelming. Was passing through to visit a friend and was pleasantly surprised by selection and staff. It was near Valentine's Day and there was a martini and prosecco tasting going on, great idea! Also loved the idea of tasting some wines before buying any; for someone who doesn't know alot about wine this was great. Wish I lived in the area, this would be my store of choice! read more
