On the last visit I told him my big toe really felt painful after he removed the callous, as he was leaving his usual 5 minute visit with me. He turned around, never looking at my toe, patted my knee and told me "you will be just fine." and left. The pain was excruciating and I couldn't put weight on my left foot. I ended up 2 days later at Scripps Urgent Care where they told me I had a roaring infection brewing and put me on antibiotics and told me to soak my foot 3x daily in Epsom Salts. I also had 2 follow up visits with my PC doctor to check it a few days later where she put me on a second antibiotic. The saddest part was that two friends came from out of state to what was going to be a fun visit. I couldn't leave my house and they ended up waiting on me and we went no where because they depended on me to show them wonderful San Diego, and I couldn't walk. It took over two months to heal properly. I no longer am going there for care nor is my husband.

My 1st question was "has this surgery changed in 30 plus years? AND told him my story", his reply was "no, but you will not be in that kind of pain, if much at all"! Max 2 weeks in a boot and then back into shoes. Well, I wanted to believe him but really didn't. I have had a number of surgeries in my 70 years, and this is the only one I remember like it was yesterday. I knew I had to proceed, low and behold I don't even think I took 1 pain pill. In a week I told him I was ready to get back to my life and he said, "not so fast, you need to wear the boot at least another week, so you don't mess up what I did". Oh darn! I did and have never had a problem since. He also saw my left foot, as it too had a big bunion, but said, "until you are in pain", let's leave it alone. 3 years later, I am now in pain (it's not a pain you forget). I went to see Dr. Berenter and said it's time. He x-rays my foot and says, let's book it. I am going in next week for my surgery and not concerned a bit because I know he is the best and have referred many people to him in my senior community. The only thing that would be better is if his office was up in our neck of the woods. LOL

The surgery went very well he put my bones together with a plate and now 3 months after, the bones have healed very well and the fracture line is barely visible. I had a comminuted intraarticular distal radius fracture which he attached together with a titanium plate. I think he is the best and if you are in his care then I consider you very lucky! I will update as time goes on, but for now everything is great and I credit it to how well the surgery went and his professionalism and expertise. I had routine bunionectomy and hammertoe surgery on one foot in 2011. I must have bumped my second…read moretoe during recovery because it healed crooked. A year later I had another surgery to straighten my toe. The surgeon said it popped right back but he still inserted a screw. That screw didn't fuse and was uncomfortable, weird looking, and painful. I had another surgery and another and my foot issues became worse. From then on I had complications and all of my toes were affected after around 6 surgeries. I had many second opinions and by then my little toe had flipped and was impossible to walk with the nail side pointing down. One surgeon had said it couldn't be fixed and showed me how to tape it for comfort (FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!) but the tape fell off before I even walked out of the exam room. I found another surgeon that did fix my little toe issue and at the same time did a hammertoe surgery on my other foot. While I was ecstatic about my little toe the hammertoe surgery extended my second toe so far that it made me shoe size bigger than my other foot and was always getting bumped and tearing the nail. My fourth toe on the original foot then collapsed. I couldn't find anyone that wanted to touch this mess. Everyone said they couldn't fix my foot. One doctor did suggest sewing my toes together but I would rather lose a toe than have that done. The last doctor told me to wear only one type of athletic shoe (for the rest of my life) and then glibly said if I wanted to look good for an event to throw on a pair of 3 inch heels. Firstly my foot was so painful and deformed that there was NO WAY I could even put a shoe like that on much less walk in it. I told him I've never worn heels I just want to be able to walk, be out of pain and be able to wear shoes and sandals and not be mortified about my foot. I felt my life devalued by these doctors. I gave all my shoes away and was very demoralized. Looking online I found Dr. Wrotslavsky and was heartened to read his fantastic reviews, particularly from people with serious issues like mine. He didn't turn me away instead said that he could shorten the long second toe and use the bone from that toe to graft the collapsed fourth toe on my other foot. He said he's never seen it done but thought it would work. I did have some complications and after 3 surgeries he suggested removing the painful joints, fusing, and inserting a plate to stabilize my foot. I had to wear a long boot so that my foot could heal and the ligaments would not move my foot. It was a long recovery but after 4 surgeries with Dr. W I finally walked out of a podiatrist office wearing normal shoes and without a surgery appointment. Prior to the last surgery I couldn't even stand the pressure of a sheet on my foot, now I have no pain. I'm able to wear shoes, walk, and show my foot in sandals. Prior to 2011 I spent a lot of time hiking. But after the first surgery even walking became difficult. I had a total of 11 surgeries from 2011-2022. I spent over 2 years total wearing a boot; I literally hobbled and limped, and I splinted, taped, booted, and braced my foot for over 10 years. Dr Wrotslavsky understood how badly my foot issue was affecting my life. He valued my life, really empathized with everything I went through, and took the time to really think through every solution possible. He's such a friendly and nice person too and I felt so comfortable with him and his office staff. His office atmosphere is so much better than a lot of doctors I went to where it seemed like I was just another patient. Shortly after I had finished recovering I was standing outside Trader Joe's and a lady walked by and said, "I love your boots." I thought YOU HAVE NO IDEA! In my case, they charged me $750 for a consultation and then never billed my insurance as promised. I reached out via phone and email multiple times and 3 months later they filed the claim for a lower amount $475 of which my insurance paid 1/3 of. I am still fighting to find out why the billing amount was so much less but after their lack of response in the past, I doubt they will respond.
