IVA was my school of choice for my son, because LB Unified refused to let my son attend his home school when we moved to another part of Long Beach. LBUSD also made the school selection and enrollment process so much more difficult that I decided to pull my child out altogether. Save the drama for your mama. In comparison, IVA had an easy enrollment and application process. I was able to contact someone from the school every time I had a question or concern. The student-teacher ratio is something LBUSD has historically fallen short on, and with IVA teachers knew my son by name. The learning environment became a small community built on pillars of intellectual virtues. As a parent, I appreciated the one-on-one communication from my child's instructors. I also enjoyed the social gatherings of parents, students and instructors, when I did have time to participate. Really, it's a private school feel without the price tag. My son was afforded opportunities he would have never had experienced in LBUSD as far as athletics and extracurricular activities such as weight lifting club, photography, and yearbook committee. Geographically, the area of the school is a little rough, but the school does have a nice outdoor area in the back for student activities away from the "distractions" of LB Blvd.

The support is unmatched not only academically but also socio-emotionally. The community is diverse and welcoming. My child is challenged academically but not stressed and she loves her school and teachers/staff/faculty/admin. The way the material is presented and discussed is all truly with curiosity, engaging and to develop critical thinkers. We know there is nothing like IVA middle school in the best way possible.

Saved the best summer camp for last this summer. My son is going into first grade so this was our…read morefirst summer of summer camps and we tested out 6 different ones. This was leaps and bounds above all the others. I had walked by it last summer on a walk and immediately set a reminder in my phone to sign my son up for this summer. It isn't just how well organized it is and the fact that the kids are outside in the water learning new things and challenging themselves every day, it's the way the director/owner (and all the counselors) speak to the children. It's exactly how you'd want someone leading your child while they are away from home - they teach respect, are firm in holding the kids accountable for behavior, but all in the name of having a positive experience. We will absolutely be signing him up here next year for at least half of the summer. They offer full day and half day, we did full day (8-4), but I ended up picking him up around 2 a couple of the days just because it was so hot out. I have heard the counselors consistently encourage and actively ensure the kids drink water and reapply sunscreen and you can tell they genuinely care about each and every kid. This is only my son's third day and he's already bonded with the staff and talks about Matty (the owner) multiple times a day. He's never been on any board other than a boogie board and within 1 hour on his first day he was paddling out on his own on a paddle board. I can just see his confidence beaming from this camp. Thank you!

They take the time to understand each child as an individual and identify the most effective manner to communicate and educate them. They are taught to be respectful and kind to others. The nurturing and free thinking approach made such a positive change in my sons social development and academic growth. They foster a collaborative environment amongst the grade levels and student population as a whole. The children are taught to embrace one another's strengths and weaknesses and to work together so everyone succeeds and feels good about themselves. They elevate the children through incentives and other programs they make available throughout the school year. In closing, this center truly takes the time and works diligently to make sure each student has the very best experience and the necessary tools to achieve optimal results in their personal and academic development and growth.

The Lab is focused on making cutting-edge, evidence-based educational approaches available to anyone! It uses a mastery-based approach (inspired by the approach of the Khan Lab School in Mountain View CA) - where each child is met where they are and on building each child's independence skills in learning so each child becomes the "owners" of their own learning. The Lab offers a wonderful array of classes designed to build love of learning and build solid academic skills. My daughter took readers and writers workshops based on Caulkins work at Columbia where she developed outstanding writing skills, project based learning activities which were very engaging, everything from designing shelters to support unhoused individuals to one focused on important times in history (she chose the roaring '20s) and environmental issues among many others. Lots of outdoor activities, help with her homeschool curriculum, talent shows, cooking classes, gardening, field trips to museums and on and on. Always something great happening there. --- She aged out of the Lab and is now in traditional high school in a large public school setting. And she was SO well prepared! She started at the Lab in 3rd grade 2 years behind in reading and math. She tested on the NWEA a national test in 8th grade as college level reading and 11th grade math (2 years ahead of her 8th grade age). In her first year of high school, she made straight As, honor roll, and each of her teachers mentioned how much they enjoyed working with her and how skilled she was in navigating her work and participating in class. Another commented on how she was one of the few in his class willing to ask as many questions as needed to really understand what was being taught (something encouraged at the Lab) But most of all, and most importantly, she LOVES learning. Thanks to the classes at the Lab and her teacher at the Lab from 3rd-8th grades, Mr. T (short for Mr. Thompson) !
