Here's my previous draft: ------ My wife and I are moving to the area, so I decided to drop in on a Friday evening workout. I felt very welcome and that the coaches were looking out for me. Always a good sign. I was warmly greeted by Chad, one of the owners and he gave me a quick rundown of the box and how they like to consult with their athletes every 90 days to review goals, nutrition, etc. ------ Now that we've moved here and the 2020 pandemic happened, I can tell you a few more things. I've dropped in here twice, and coming from the East Coast, this altitude is humbling to say the least. The box is one of the largest I've ever visited. They can run a few different classes at the same time (and they do) whereas most places can only do one. The other members of CrossFit Colfax were very nice to me, and seemed to all know each other, which is one of the big things that like about CrossFit: the community is great. I've been doing some of their workouts that they email out to the members. I've talked to both Esther and Chad a couple times and they're both super cool. They really care about their members and the community. As many small businesses struggle during this time, I'm sure they are struggling too, but they ALWAYS are cheerful and excited. They have great senses of humor and seem to be the type of people that always have fun. They're adapting and I'm excited to see what the future brings for them and for me there. After leaving the gym over a month ago due to a personal conflict between the owners and myself, my membership was terminated. I attended the gym since just before COVID. I have had absolutely no contact with the owners since leaving. I did make some great relationships with the coaches. Today, I bought one of the coaches a cup of coffee. A couple of hours later, I received a phone call from the Denver Police Department warning me that if I entered the gym again I would be arrested. This is the behavior of a very unstable person. This gym constantly claims that they are a close community? The unwarranted and constant harassment from the owners is what dictates me to give this low rating. read more

I'm loving this place! I have been coming here for just over a month now and its awesome. The new owners are investing a ton of money into making this place one of the best CF boxes in the city. New paint, equipment (Rogue Echo Bikes & Ab mats) and a fun environment! There was a couple in from NYC a few weekends ago that did a drop-in and they were so impressed with the facilities--I highly recommend coming here if you are in from out of town. I have not fully integrated into meeting everyone yet, but for the most part everyone seems pretty friendly and I know the new owners want this to be a no-attitude gym. This is my 4th CrossFit gym here in Denver, and I find the coaching has been top notch. Although it is a little out of my way, I am so glad I joined and for all the reasons listed above. If you are seeking an excellent gym that is inviting, competitive, and fun. Then Colfax Strong-Strength is the place to be. I started my journey three years ago. I was 51 at the time so you may understand the unknown that I was dealing with at that time. I learned that trying to work out on my own, that I was not benefiting from my routine work out the way felt I should be. I talked with Chad and Esther (owners) and they gave me nothing but positive vibes and energy about the journey I was about to begin. I started out with their Fit class. After a year's time, I was confident enough to move, with great confidence, right into the CrossFit classes. I must say Chad, Esther and the all the coaches have really stuck by me as well as pushed me to be all I can be. When I felt that I didn't do so well on a WOD, the coaches were right there with nothing but positive energy and great feedback and a fist bump. I didn't feel as if I failed the WOD but was advised to what I can try next time and to always ask questions if I'm not sure about anything. If you're not sure and would like to know what this type of training has to offer and can do for you, I would suggest giving Colfax Strong-Strength & Conditioning a try and or do a drop-in class to feel the vibe! The gym space itself is great and the owners are good about buying new equipment and maintaining the existing equipment. The best part of the gym for me was the open gym space ... there is enough room and enough equipment to get done any workout one might want to do. A few items prevent me from giving it a higher review (and almost went with a lower one). 1. Other than the owners, I never really found the current batch of coaches very helpful. That's why I mostly focused on open gym and think it is a good option for people who are more experienced. If you are more experienced and want more than basic coaching, you may only want to attend classes taught by the owners. 2. I had to cancel my membership because I have moved up to Boulder. Unfortunately, the updated contact includes a 30-day notice to cancel. So I ended up having to pay an extra month's membership even though I am not able to use the gym more than 1 day a week (I wouldn't have had to pay the cancellation if I moved more than 50 miles away). 3. The owners have a weird phobia around chalk (check out their Instagram). There are regular "chalk shaming videos". I even got a couple of text messages warning me about my chalk mess. It got to the point where I would spray down everything and clean up other people's messes because I didn't want to get the negative texts anymore. Having a clean gym is one thing, but beating up your paying members over it is another. If you are in the neighborhood and are a beginner Crossfitter/Functional Fitness person, it is a good gym. read more

Training the past two days at CrossFit Colfax has been a blast. This is one of the nicest boxes I have been to during my travels. It's super "clean" and its a nice big box so you gotta lotta space to train The DENVER elevation is no joke! I was drenched just after a few drills, it was such a great workout. This is the fourth Crossfit gym I've been a member of and definitely the best. In addition to the space and equipment being fantastic, Chad and Esther (the owners) have cultivating an awesome community centered around working hard for an hour of your day and getting in great shape. Was traveling from out of town and was looking for a CrossFit gym to work out in during my stay in Denver. I walked in (pretty much off the street) and asked if I could do the WOD for the day. There were a few things that were pretty awesome about this place: 1. Jake (the Director) was really down to earth. No pressure to sign up, but was open to dropins (which personally I like because I have to travel a lot). 2. Lots of space. The place could easily hold a couple dozen people doing a WOD. 3. Nice people. One person was very kind and encouraging during the WOD, which I also like. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is in the Denver area. read more

I started doing Crossfit about three years ago at another gym in the area. While it got me hooked, I eventually came to realize that the coaching was lacking. Fast forward a few years, and I move back to Denver and begin looking for the "right" gym. I dropped into most in the "Denver proper" area, and even though I wasn't planning on it, I landed at Colfax. Here's why: the coaching. Sure, the location is great. It's located at Colfax and Emerson, just down the street from the Capitol, and this is about a mile away from where I live. I can bike, or I can stop by the gym on my way home from work. But truly, I landed here because this is the place that I received the most feedback and coaching in my few drop-ins. I know I have a lot of areas that I'm weak, and I wanted help in those areas. When I started, Jake was managing/coaching the gym, while Sergio and John were also coaching. All three of these gents know their stuff, and they work to ensure that everyone is doing movements safely and at a weight that challenges us at the right level. While Jake now teaches most of the classes, there are also some newer coaches that are finding their niches. The honest truth: I was hesitant to join. I didn't feel as though I fit in, the group was pretty tight-knit, and that meant that I felt like I knew no one for the first many months there. As soon as I became attending the same class time more often, I got to know more faces/people, and of course, that helps. That said, I've been there about a year now, and I am finally starting to feel comfortable. While that might seem odd, the coaching is worth it and the level of competition is also high. There's no doubt that I've improved in my time here. The gym is quite open to drop-ins, as long as you have Crossfit experience. Every week, there are plenty of new faces that need a gym while they're visiting the city. If you're looking for solid programming, coaches who know what they're talking about and will make you better, and an open space that can accommodate large classes, this is a great spot for you to check out. read more

Just signed up this week. Very large space with high ceilings and all new equipment. Trainers are very nice, applying absolutely no pressure to sign up after the free trial class. Sadly, this review is based on my interactions with this facility as I was never "blessed" with the privilege to work out here. That is, I was apparently deemed unworthy of their fitness programs. Also, it's unfortunate that zero stars is not allowed on Yelp. I am in Denver for the month and seeking a gym to stay in shape. I emailed to let them know I wanted to visit as I am new to Cross-Fit (brand new). I simply thought I'd try it out and mix up my workouts for a few weeks. I work out 6 days a week and get after it pretty hard. I'll leave it at this....I would have kept up. Unfortunately, I was told that the WOD for today was too complicated. They could not allow me to start with that program. Fair enough. I replied asking if there was a better time or workout to get started with? Nothing. No response. I'd think that something like...."stop in and let's talk" would have been a great start. I'm staying 2 minutes away! I understand safety but this comes across as pretty arrogant, elitist and unwelcoming for a sport that is supposedly built on group effort, encouragement and participation. Oh well, who was I to think I could just barge in to Rich Froning' s gym? I mean...I've even deviated from the Paleo Diet on one or two occasions lately and rarely work out with my shirt off. I've been going to Crossfit Colfax almost since they opened and I have really enjoyed my experience. In the last 7 months I have definitely increased my strength and endurance as well as feeling improvement in a knee that has pestered me with tendonitis for a while. Before you even think about doing Crossfit you should understand that it's not easy. You can pack a lot of movement into an hour and if you're not into digging in on the days when you think you're too sore to do anything, then this isn't for you. However, if you love Crossfit, or are really interested, this is the place to be. Both Sergio and Jake really take the time to make sure that you understand the movements and form before attempting a weight that is beyond your level. They are familiar with pretty much everyone's abilities who works out here and are incredibly valuable when scaling a workout down (that being said you may curse them internally, or even externally, when they tell you to add weight). I'm really not sure you could ask for a better experience than this box with both these guys training you. Now get off Yelp and come workout with them! read more

After an extended break from Crossfit that lasted way too long, I connected with Chad and Esther through the gym's website. I liked the idea of starting with their FIT program as a way to work back into a Crossfit program. Just as I was getting over the challenges (aka misery) of starting over COVID arrived, and the gym had to close. Chad and Esther were on it! They immediately starting emailing workouts and loaned out equipment. They started zoom workouts, and added coaching tips on utube. They worked really hard to keep the community together. When the gym was able to partially reopen in June 2020, they had a really good plan for social distancing and gym cleanliness. All the gym members were very compliant with the rules, and everyone cooperated and sustained a positive attitude through this long COVID year. Other good points......the coaches are excellent; the Crossfit programming is terrific; and membership community is very friendly. All good. read more

Swolfax, Brofax, call it what you like I really liked this place for the year that I was member. Space is good, coaching is great, people are excellent. During my time there programming was more "beast-focused," slow-heavy WODs. I left only because my work schedule was precluding me from attending scheduled class times. I hope someday to go back. Crossfit Colfax is all about quality of movement. The trainers are amazing at helping you move better and get stronger and faster at the same time. Since I started at Colfax I've picked up a ton of tips to improve my snatch and deadlift, plus I've improved my running and general physical preparedness.
