A bit of a stickler for looking at ingredients on packaging I need to befriend someone who reads Chinese/Japanese/Cantonese/Mandarine so that I know what I'm buying exactly. Pre-packed, wafer-thin beef and pork rolls to drop into your instant ramen noodles, millions of soy and oyster sauces, billions of chilli oils, gummis, Poki, bamboo shoots, it's happy hour at the freaking flavour factory and you've got the golden ticket. Of course, at least half of this place is things that I don't recognise and will probably never try (read: weird, so weird) but I try one new thing every time I come here. Doesn't always pay off, but 1 in 3 times it does. Like the chilli oil with cured pork chunks that's now my new favourite condiment, holler. Just don't buy the garlic that's imported from China - it's bleached, and the girl at Cornersmith Picklery told me it goes bright blue when pickled, naaaasty.

Now being from the US many people would think this is related to once great discount store I grew up in the 70's and early 80's. This is no where near that as it is SOO much better. Woolworths is one of two markets within Macquarie Center, the area's main "mall". Being from the US I never expected a supermarket inside their shopping mall but hey it makes sense. One stop shop for everything you may need. Though the market is no where as big as I am used to in NY it fits perfectly into the area. The produce and meats are very fresh tasting. The chicken and eggs come from free range farms and the snacks and chips were great helping me through the long hours. The nice feature they have here are that there are a lot more self service check out line and they are staffed with very helpful employees. This and the overall cleanliness of the store makes it quite and enjoyable experience wandering up and down the aisles. If this type of market were states side I would certainly be a regular as I am here.

Imagine that but with Italian Australians yelling "beautiful strawberries, two for four dollar, two for four dollar!" and you have Superfresh. With plenty of fresh fruit and vege, good prices and plenty of Asian produce, it's no wonder that this is one of the main hubs in Eastwood's 'Chinese side'. I always see an Aunty of some sort when I'm here - whether a real relative, a friend of my parents or a parent of my friends. Wear good shoes and be prepared to lose all concept of personal space, particularly on Saturdays. It's always a bit overwhelming for newbies, and who knows how the line for the checkout really works, but it's better than legging it to Flemington and you'll emerge with prettier veggies than the gwei lo next door who shops at Woolies. Just don't take all the good bok choy.
