4 stars for their samosa and mint cilantro chutney!! Samosa are a lovely deep fried pastry filled with veggies, spiced potatoes, peas and LOVE! These are by far the most flavorful I've ever had. Unfortunately, Cold Springs Food Mart is located off a very winding road about 12 minutes from Placerville. Customer services isn't really existent which I can over look because its basically a convenience store that makes food. Mondays they don't serve food but have pre-made samosa's food sale. I didn't really want to leave a negative review because it seems that a lot of people love this place, and because there aren't many Indian food places out this way. I also appreciate that they're a small family business and I don't want to criticize hard working people. However we grabbed two dishes as a takeaway and both were difficult to eat. One was lacking in any flavor at all and the other was so intensely salty that it was inedible and we aren't picky eaters. It was like a mouthful of seawater. We ended up completely throwing one away and going hungry. Service was very friendly and premises seemed clean and inviting enough I'm assuming this was probably not their usual standard based on other reviews here, it was just our experience. read more

Looking for a place for lunch and this popped up! Inside this brightly painted, ultra clean convenience store is a hidden gem of an Indian food haven. If you love Indian food you must try this homemade food. If you haven't tried Indian food, this would be the place to test the waters. The food is excellent. Prepared with care with quality ingredients. I tried the chicken samosa with a cilantro mint sauce: perfection! Crispy light crust chock full of chicken and some veggies to balance it out; so yummy I could've easily eaten 4. The butter chicken was outstanding. The chicken was tender and was perfect with the delectable sauce. This was excellent chicken; practically melted in your mouth tender over basmati rice. Great rice. The portion was enough for 2 but of course I kept it to myself. This eatery is not far so I will be returning for more delicious food. I highly recommend this place to you if you already love Indian food or want to experience it for the first time. The lady at the register was super friendly and will recommend items for you. The kitchen gets 100/100 for cleanliness so you cannot go wrong. Give this place a try and support local small businesses. And since it's also a convenience store you can pick up beverages or anything on your list at the same time!! Win-win!!! There is ample seating outside when it's not raining!! Woke up in the mood for some good Indian food. Problem was that we now live in a rural area and we haven't heard of any Indian restaurants in this region. So of course I searched for one on Yelp and I came across this place. It's a convenience store with a restaurant outdoor setting on the left. We were greeted by a friendly woman and said we could sit anywhere we liked. We used to live near Little India in Southern California, so we've had our fair share of authentic Indian cuisine. I have to say that I was impressed by their food! We ordered the butter chicken, chicken biryani and of course, garlic naan. The biryani was good but the butter chicken was so full of flavor. One word that best describes it would be "intense." It really satisfied my Indian food cravings. The garlic naan was fluffy and had a good amount of garlic, just the right amount. If you've never had Indian cuisine, I highly recommend you give it this place a try. Spice Kitchen is legit Indian food. read more

My daughter is home for a month and LOVES Indian food! Last night we went to the Spice Kitchen and it was awesome! Outdoor seating only, but we were fine with that. A Delightful Surprise- Nestled in the great of California Gold Country, this former convenience/video store is now the best Indian food I've had. We had the butter chicken, chicken biryani and garlic naan. The biryani is perfectly spicy and the butter chicken was rich and garlicky. I can't remember the last time I had to write such a poor review for a restaurant, but unfortunately in this case, I feel it is necessary to alert the Yelp community because there are currently only four reviews - and how could they all be five stars??? When considering ordering the Indian food from this corner store, please remember that this is a *corner store* - it is not a restaurant. While this may be a fine place to grab items you forgot at the grocery store, it should be your last resort for takeout. Let's go item by item through the dishes that we ordered, as I can only attest to the dishes we have tried: The Chicken Tikka Masala ($15) : Normally our favorite Indian dish, but this evening it was our biggest disappointment. Let's be honest with the Yelpers reading this review - that neon red sauce in this Tikka Masala comes from a generous amount of food dye, not the heavy spices and tomato paste that should cause the orange-red color. In addition to the lack of flavor (probably missing ginger / tomato paste), our two orders of Tikka Masala were each about half the size of most Indian restaurants. I actually believe they may not have had enough left over and may have split one order to make enough for two! There may have been 4-5 very small pieces of chicken per order. A shame. The Saag Paneer ($12) : Now, this is where things got a bit scary. Something tasted off with this Saag Paneer. Not in the way that it was bland or doused with a commercial food dye - more in the way that it tasted rancid. After taking one uncomfortable bite of this I tried one more small bite to be sure, and I am legitimately worried that the spinach may have gone bad... Luckily we didn't eat very much of it. The Garlic Naan ($3) : The three dollars is for one small flat of naan bread that may have been previously frozen. Not our worst naan ever, but definitely can't be the best either. So there you have it - my unfortunately critical review. Unless this place has recently taken a turn for the worse, I cannot imagine anything keeping the "restaurant" side of their business open aside from the fact that they are the only option for Indian food for miles. My new favorite stop while visiting Coloma. Needed some eggs late at night and was ready to drive the long route to find a grocery. Passed by while they were closing and they were so very nice and let us get what we needed even after door was being locked up. Thank you! Super friendly and just what we needed. I love Indian food and tried two of their "Spice Kitchen" offerings today for lunch. It was my first visit here but won't be the last. Their butter chicken was the BEST I have ever had (and I've tried many in California and in England). The flavors were just exquisite. The chicken had a subtle tandoori flavor, and the sauce was the smoothest and creamiest I have yet encountered. Not overly spicy but just enough. This place is a hidden gem and I can't wait to try more from their varied menu. The employees were very pleasant and the environment tidy and clean, too. read more
