The Granary Restaurant - Large schnitzel

Rounding up from a 3.5. My husband picked up some schnitzel on the way home, so I only tried it…read moreover an hour later. Because it was in the cardboard container for so long, by the time my husband got home the container was kind of damp from the heat and moisture, and some of the sauerkraut stuck to the bottom. I originally just wanted the wiener schnitzel, though they use pork cutlet instead of the traditional veal specifically for wiener schnitzel. I decided to go with the mushroom schnitzel instead, since it seemed popular. I asked for the mushroom sauce on the side instead of on top because I didn't want the schnitzel to be soggy after travelling. It had been awhile since I had spaetzle, so I got that and braised cabbage instead of the standard potatoes and gravy and steamed veggies it came with. My husband got me a large schnitzel, which I'm glad he did because it was quite thin and the large was a good size. I was hesitant to reheat it because it was so thin and I didn't want to overcook it. I was also super hungry (I didn't eat lunch beforehand to save the room) and didn't want to wait. The schnitzel was good with the slice of lemon as well as the mushroom sauce. The creamy mushroom sauce tasted like Campbell's condensed mushroom soup with some mushrooms added, but that's actually one of my favourite canned soups so I can't complain. The only downside was that it was cold and thickened in the containers, so I probably should've reheated the sauce. The spatzle seemed a bit overcooked because it was a bit gummy. I was surprised to find it had the same mushroom sauce on top of it. It was ok, but it would've been better with just butter, and probably would've been a much better texture if I had it freshly made. There was plenty of braised red cabbage. It wasn't too sour and surprisingly sweeter than I expected, but good and hearty. This definitely would've been better in a non-cardboard container, but more environmentally friendly, I guess. My husband got the large Cordon Bleu schnitzel that was stuffed with black forest ham and cheese, whipped potatoes with gravy, and steamed broccoli and carrots. I tried the schnitzel and while good, I still liked mine better with the sauce on top. The potatoes were pretty good, very smooth with a dark gravy, but not sure if they were homemade. Overall good, filling meal. Would love to go there and eat-in someday so that the food is still hot and fresh!

I really like The Seafood Grill--it's perhaps one of my favourite seafood spots around in Ottawa…read more The ingredients were fresh and delicious. Although the portion was not the biggest for its price (I got the paella and two spring rolls, which ended up around 50 dollars for me), they were filling, and the seafood ingredients were very solid. The paella was super delicious, especially the chorizo sausage bits. They were bursting with flavour, which really complements the other seafood. My friend got the Tony's Bouillabaisse, which I thought was delicious too (although I don't think she liked it all that much). The spring rolls were super yummy. They were fried to crispy perfection and filled with steaming hot shrimp, crab bits, and lettuce. It was super fun to eat, too. My favourite thing about The Seafood Grill was how freshly cooked every single dish was. All three dishes came out steaming hot, which I knew they had prepared freshly in the back. All seafood restaurants should do it like The Seafood Grill as the gold standard. I think I'll be back next time I'm in town, especially if I can visit the Kanata area. I really want to try their fish and chips and all the other dishes. Great service (I loved the cold water). The vibe was fun (tho there were a couple of flies, which I assumed were inevitable in the middle of summer).

Always a great experience. Fantastic food…read more Casual ambiance. Excellent service. Been dining here for over a decade, and it never disappoints.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Cute little bistro in Perth, ON…read more We lucked out and they had lobster rolls on their menu when we were there. They were delicious. The Long Version: The hubster and I had lunch at the Rocky River Cafe and it was fantastic. They have their regular menu but then they also have a special menu that changes daily. We were thrilled to see lobster rolls on their special menu the day we went. It was $23.95 for a lobster roll, coleslaw and fries or a salad. I got mine with the salad and my husband got his with fries. The lobster roll was big, much bigger than at other places out east. The bun was like a hoagie rather than a hot dog bun. Bigger is always better! Lol. The lobster meat was plentiful and really tasty. I liked that they didn't mix the lobster meat with the mayo but rather slathered the bread with mayo and filled the sandwich with buttered lobster meat. It made it easier for me to remove some of the mayo, since I'm not a huge fan of mayo. The bun was soft and fresh. I had asked for the salad dressing on the side and the server even wrote it down because she said "oh I have to write that down." Despite all this, the salad came dressed :( It was a bit overdressed for my liking, but not excessively so, and we were hungry, so I just ate it. It was a spring mix, a slice of cucumber (it was cut on the oblique, so not as stingy as it sounds), a ring of red pepper and a few grape tomatoes cut into quarters. The dressing was an herb vinaigrette. My husband's fries were delicious. I sort of regretted not getting fries, haha. The coleslaw was mayo based and had cabbage and carrots. It did not have much seasoning to it. I did not enjoy it and gave most of it to my husband. My husband also had a coffee after the meal ($3.25). Service was pleasant. We chose to sit in the little front room which just had 3 tables in it, so it's a bit secluded and quieter. The main dining room is bigger and more open. We enjoyed being in the small room but it was a bit cold in there. I don't think the insulation is good (it was freezing outside). Washrooms are upstairs and were also very cold. Although oddly the landing before the washrooms was very warm. There was no hot water in the washrooms. Only ice cold water to wash hands. Yikes. Despite the cold washrooms and cold dining area at the front of the restaurant, and my overdressed salad, I still really enjoyed my meal and would return. Street parking or paid parking lot parking only, but street parking is free for 2 hours and lot parking is free on weekends. Review #38 (2025)
