Definitely one of my favorite wineries and tasting rooms in Benton City. Located in the Red Mountain AVA near Benton City, their tasting room offers expansive views of the vineyards. The tasting room is designed into the landscape and is modern and elegant. There's even a bell tower that's visible from miles away. This tasting is picturesque and a prime spot for events. I've completed numerous tastings and attended release parties and dinner at Col Solare. My recent experience was their Harvest Dinner with the wine maker. The 4 course dinner was paired with their exceptional wines. The event was hosted by their wine maker, Stephanie Cohen. My favorites were their Rosé, Tenuta and Cab Franc. Service is also noteworthy. During my last pick up party, a staff member gave me a tour of their barrel room. It's these little touches of customer service that always impresses me. I ended up purchasing a double magnum of their 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon. Overall, I highly recommend Col Solare. I just wish they would open a new tasting room in Woodinville. Being a fan of Italian/Tuscan style wines I was really looking forward to this place. I was quickly shocked at the tasting fee ($50/per person). I have never seen this outside of Napa. I decided to try it anyway, hoping to be surprised by the wine. To my surprise an Italian/Tuscan inspired wine with no Italian/Tuscan style wines. We tried Merlot, Cab Franc, and Cab Sauv. All of which were a bit underwhelming for me especially considering the tasting fee. If you are looking for Italian style wines in the area I recommend Chandler Reach also in Benton City. If you're coming to Col Solare for the views and the beautifully decorated space, it's easily 5 stars. Honestly, that's exactly why I wanted to come here. I saw photos of the tasting room and it is beautiful! We had our pooch with us, so we didn't spend any time inside. We sat in the back patio, they were kind enough to give our pooch some water. First, there were only 3 tastings offered for the price of just under $22 - that's extremely steep IMO. They were generous pours and we did get an extra tasting of their Rose. The tasting fee is waived if you buy $100 or more worth of bottles. The 3 tastings were really great. Full bodied and earthy reds. But I was turned off by the high price for the tastings, and most places will waive the fee if you buy 1 or 2 bottles vs. a fixed amount. This was my favorite winery on a recent tour of Columbia Valley wineries. The setting and grounds are spectacular and the wines are outstanding. The tasting price point is typical for a premium winery as quality tends to not come cheaply ($22 for a generous 3 wine pour). Feel free to "revisit" any of the wines sampled. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and pleasant. We enjoyed our tasting inside where we could monopolize our server's time with questions, but they will gladly serve you outdoors where you can take in the expansive vineyard views. This winery and tasting room is located right smack dab in the middle of Red Mountain. For those of you who aren't familiar with Columbia Valley wines, it's like where all the best grapes in this region come from. So to be able to sip your wine in the presence of some outstanding vines is priceless to me. I really liked the 16 cab Franc and the 16 Cab Sav should open up really nicely if it's cellared for a few years. Our visit to Col Solare was nothing short of world class in every aspect of the word. From the time we hit the parking lot until the time we checked out we were treated like family, nothing short of VIP service. Although our tasting was advertised to be just 3 wines we were treated to just about everything on the menu. Each wine was presented to us in nice stemware and not once did we reuse a glass. Monica was officially our server but we were also spoiled by Ian and Eddie. All three were very knowledgeable of the wine we were being served as well as the wines of Eastern Washington. We enjoyed every wine we tasted but did have a couple standouts. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Malbec and the 2016 Syrah were all standouts. Wines are priced at the luxury level but seem reasonable in comparison to comparable wines in Napa. Our visit to Col Solare was indeed memorable. I only wish we would have saved it for last because now all other wineries in Eastern Washington will be judged based on Col Solare. Is that fair? Don't care, I am on vacation and therefore I make the rules... For this visit I give Col Solare 5 stars. Woohoo! As good as it gets! read more

The tours were not available when I went, but it was also near closing time. However, we were able to catch the tasting for about ~$25 -- 3 wines (2006, 2007, 2008). One of the more expensive, if not most expensive wineries in the area. Hmmmmm, winegasmic as it touched my lips. Hello 2007. We also had some unusual sausage meats, including kangaroo, venison, etc. It wasn't unbearable... I would say pleasant with the mustard, but not something I'd go out of my way to eat regularly. Today, we spent the morning in a tasting and on a tour with Ian. It was amazing! The ambiance is perfect. The vineyards are indescribable with their beauty. Long over-due post, and only giving a second star because of the beautiful property & views. Went here last April for Spring Barrel with a group of my girlfriends for my birthday weekend. Overall we all had a good experience, so we put it on the list to visit this year! Looking back, we all wish we would have skipped the second visit! As soon as we walked through the door, we were treated very poorly. The judgmental staff right away was hesitant to acknowledge our group. Of course we were laughing and having conversations that come with the fun festivities, but none of us were being inappropriate or disrespectful. The manager proceed to move us all into their banquet room which seemed like a wonderful gesture, only then to tell us we needed to leave! AFTER two girls had purchased two very (emphasis on very) expensive bottles of wine. Speaking with others who have been here, it seems that they only give customer service to those who have "champagne" taste. If you don't fit the profile of spending hundreds of dollars, they will look the other way. They are good at putting on a luxury persona, but that's as far as it goes. read more

The location is beautiful. They have great views and their buildings are pretty. And that's where the goodness ends . Despite being listed as a top winery to visit, I think hospitality and experience are just as much a factor in loving a place as much as what they offer. The facilities feel really pretentious when you walk in. That is validated by the judgmental looks you receive (from in our case the woman behind the rafting counter ) as if we just walked in after rolling out of bed. ( not the case). We had just been to another winery ( which was actually quite busy) and they took great care of us and we really enjoyed sitting on their patio. There were 3 wines. One $50 and 2 $75 bottles. The best was one of the $75 bottles , of course . Wine is decent but just down the road you can pay almost half the price for better wine and care. ( I suggest Kiona, Fielditas, Anelare, and Frichette). Oh and one last thing I will mention, one of the employees ( who we had just seen at the previous winery and said he worked at Col Solare ) had met up with his girlfriend / partner, whoever and they were making out in the seating area. I don't think he was working, but For a place that was supposed to be so upscale that was pretty tacky. read more

We had high hopes about this winery which appeared to live up to expectations until we actually got inside. So, we will start with the pros. The estate is beautiful and expertly farmed. Since they are a supplier to Chateau Ste Michelle, they have some money and knowledge poured into the vineyards and how you have to drive through the vines of grapes to reach the tasting room. The facade up to the winery was gorgeous and was picture worthy. This has an amazing view of the surrounding hills from high on Red Mountain. Then, we walked inside to a beautiful tasting room which was complete with fireplace and conversation dice at the tables. This is where the experience stopped being enjoyable. The cons: We were not sure if the tasting room was even open even after opening the door and having to ask if they were. A warm smile would have gone further than a blank stare as we entered. Once we got to the counter, the server explained how they were not like normal tasting rooms and started by explaining the history of the winery and then breezed over the three wines available to taste. Since they only had the three, we decided to get two taster sets for the three of us (I was driving but still got a few sips). They do slightly larger than normal pours, but they poured every wine at the same time and did not explain anything other than their vintage year and primary grape used. While we did enjoy the ambiance, the wines were less than outstanding. They all tasted good and were 'drinkable' but did not jump out at us after our excellent experience and better wines at another winery earlier that day. The entire time we tasted, the attendant was on the phone and did not even notice when we had a small spill and then did not even offer to help clean up. I would say that our help was maybe an anomaly, but she never introduced her self. The worst part about the experience was when the bill came. $54.50 for two tasting sets of three 2 oz. pours. A typical glass of wine is 4 oz. that means we paid nearly $18.00 per glass of wine which is more than we paid for three tastings of six wines altogether at another tasting room. I understand wine is not meant to be cheap, but I believe in quality deserving price and the quality was not there. Overall, I think this winery could be a great place for a restaurant and bar that does not focus on their wine and uses the beautiful environment to feature the Red Mountain Vineyards area. read more

Bring your camera! - We got an impromptu private barrel room tour. It was awesome. Their facilities are spotless. It was cool to see their barrels aging by vintage. - They had grappa! One of the only wineries I've ever seen carry grappa in WA. You can't taste it, but you can buy it. - Generous pours. Cons: - Expensive. Worth it, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny for a bottle of wine. - The staff needs to be trained up a bit more on their wine knowledge. Holy Hell. If I could give this 10 stars, I would. We rolled into this place with about 30 minutes to spare before we had to leave to catch our flight in Pasco. We sheepishly explained that we were in a rush and the two women working there rolled out the red carpet for us - speedily delivering our two wine flights and a bevy of delicious foods to us, including a free cheese platter that we didn't even order, just because they were being nice. And the coolest part was, even though they hustled to get this all out to us, nothing felt rushed. They still explained every wine, the intricacies of each vintage, and each cheese with detail and intelligence. We left feeling more relaxed than when we arrived! Somehow, their attention to our time constraints made us feel like we weren't in a rush at all. Oh - and BESIDES all that awesome customer service, THE WINES WERE TO DIE FOR. Every single one. Their goal, as they both independently told us, is to make the single best Cabernet in the state of Washington. And I think they are doing a great job achieving that! Not to mention the absolutely gorgeous, Artesa-like modern building & grounds. We sat outside on the patio and overlooked Red Mountain. It was the day after the "rapture" (May 22, 2011), and I sure felt like I was in heaven! I hope that more people find this gem, which is why I wanted to write here and rate it a 5 star joint. It's tough to find things to do in this area of Washington, so I highly, highly recommend visiting Col Solare. It will be the highlight of your trip! This is a gorgeous tasting room with delicious wine (red only!), tasty food & friendly staff. On Saturdays during the summer, they offer a cichetti menu as well as flights, single glasses or bottles. The wine is amazing & they only have a few vintages available at a time - so you aren't overwhelmed with having to choose. The view of the vineyards & the extended landscape from the deck is breathtaking, especially during sunset. They do not have a lot of shade, so bring a sun hat & sunscreen...they will make sure you have plenty of water & you can always go inside to cool off a bit. Great experience and great wine! I visited with my friend this past Sunday right after the tasting room opened. I really love how they serve a flight versus a tasting so that you can go back and forth between your three wines to ascertain the differences between each and determine your favorite. Zack was our guide on this journey and he was wonderful and humored all my questions with good nature. The tasting room itself was quite beautiful with wonderful views. Their wines were stellar and probably the best we tasted throughout the weekend. An interesting luxury wine experience (as they like to be known) vying to be the cabernet winery in the area. The winery is unique in that they our one kind of winery also called Col Solare, and a tasting flight allows you to taste three vintages of the one wine. The generous pours of the three vintages (2006, 2007, and 2008) cost $24 and we were not offered a tour. I was bit overwhelmed by the woman behind the counter and her fairly hard "sell" and uptight demeanor. She obviously memorized a script and it came off as forced. However, at the end of our stay, as we were saying our goodbye, she relaxed and gave us great information about the nearby wineries, speaking quite highly of a handful of them. She kept saying "...they're a small production, keep that in mind..." as if that were a negative characteristic. I embrace small productions and family-owned and operated wineries. Col Solare is a joint venture between Chateau St. Michelle and a winer group in Italy. We did not try the food, as we drank our 3 glasses and immediately left, however, I do remember that almonds will cost $8. A bottle of the 2007 cost about $85. The view is amazing. As you walk up the very many steps, you start to get a glimpse. Then, when you reach the top, you see Benton City area and freeway in the distance at base of the mountain. We chose to drink our wine on the outer patio (there is an inner patio without a view and an indoor "salon" - a room with two large tables, and a kitchen counter with a sink and cupboards) but we soon realized that we couldn't enjoy the view as we sat because the handrail of the patio was so tall that it obscured our view as we sat. Perhaps, a six foot tall man could sit and drink wine and actually see the view at the same time. Overall, with so few wines to drink and a view we couldn't enjoy as we sat and sipped, we won't be returning anytime soon. read more

Have been in all of Red Mountain tasting rooms and Col Solare is by far the best wine being made on the hill. We were treated like family by Deb and Arron in the tasting room and the quality of the wine is comparable to Leonetti and Quilceda Creek but a third less pricey. Read Kevin D's review and suggest he and company visit lesser wineries rather than complain about one out of his price range, step up or shut up Kevin, you get what you pay for.
