I would give a zero if I can. Our daughter did a full evaluation here and we were informed the academic part is not covered by the insurance, which we are okay with. We were never given any estimation about how much this will cost nor did we received any bill, until the administration called me asking a credit card to pay the bill. I asked to have the bill send to me and to my surprise they are charging very high amount for the academic part. I asked the administration if there is any discount for this bill if I pay in full. She told me she will talk with the doctor and get back to me, which she never did. Two months later, they tried to charge the credit card on file without notifying me and failed. The administration called me again and asked for payment. I asked her about discount and this time she did set up an meeting for me and the doctor, which I appreciated. The doctor explained a lot of things but refuse to give me any type of discount. What I feel unreasonable is that the insurance paid the doctor about $1700 for nine hours of work but the doctor is charging me $1500 for a three and half hours of work. I understand there is difference when insurance negotiate price versus paying the part personally, but the hourly cost is more than doubled !! I tried to explain this reasoning to the doctor and in the end she became very impatient with me and started to say she was wasting the time which she would be able to charge more money. That is very unprofessional. Anyway, I refused to pay an unreasonable bill and even if they will send it to a collection agency, I am fine with that consequence. They will get much less money that way I guess :) I guess the lesson learned here is always ask for estimation before you do the evaluation, otherwise you will be shocked later by the bill. read more

Dr. Ferdico is a very talented neuropsychologist. She did a great job diagnosing our son. Her billing manager successfully managed to negotiate a single case agreement with Cigna, so the diagnostics were covered in network as opposed to out of network. We also utilized Cogwheel for a month of ABA therapy. The therapist was wonderful with my son. The tough part of ABA is it is expensive (out of network for us), and parents do not get to watch to learn anything from it. Our son needed social skills training, and the first month of ABA really helped him gain confidence. We weren't seeking out compliance with authority, as is the purpose with many who seek ABA. We did not seek to hinder our son's voice or dismiss sensory concerns. This clinic is still in start up mode. If in network, it is a great option. Dr. Ferdico is working hard to build a team that will provide occupational therapy, ABA, speech therapy, and diagnostic services in one place. Cons: As with many clinics of its type, your credit card will be charged regularly and without warning up front before insurance is billed. If you are five minutes late, you will be charged $20. If they end the session five minutes early, you will not receive a credit. If you need to cancel therapy, you will pay heavily if you do not provide 72 hours notice (e.g. $400). They prefer three weeks notice if you are ending treatment, even though I was advised that the 30 day cancellation clause was only for preschool patients. So, read the fine print. Horrible management. Watch out what they charge for orelse you will be shocked looking at the bill statement. The owner is the rudest lady I have ever seen who has absolutely no empathy for any kids or parents that show up there. It's all $$$ running on her mind. Therapists are nice and focused but good ones always leave within couple of months. Pros: The children and families are wonderful. Cons: No one should ever work here and parents should look elsewhere for services for their chidren. I have never seen such a lack of compassion and understanding for children and their families before coming to Cogwheel. It is not uncommon to hear staff, INCLUDING Dr. Ferdico (the owner) make snide comments about simple things such as families being a little late due to behavioral challenges at home, or parents simply asking for more therapy hours for children who need them. People who are not even in the field of ABA honestly have more understanding for what these families go through than the people running this clinic. This lack of compassion also shows in the way employees are treated. Staff are rarely granted breaks and are sometimes stuck waiting 30 minutes for someone to relieve them for a quick bathroom break. It is also extremely common for staff to be scheduled for more than 5 hours without a lunch break. This can often be fixed if the employee asks for lunch at the appropriate time, but they are made to feel like they aren't a team player even though they are only asking for what they are entitled to under Washington State Labor Laws. Staff are so overworked, and their voices are so rarely heard that nearly every week someone calls out "sick". Overall this is a horrible environment to work in. Dr. Ferdico talks down to her staff AND the parents, turn over rate is extremely high (7 employees leaving in less than a month), and the staff are generally not supportive of each other. If you are a new employee coming to Cogwheel, you should expect a cold shoulder and for people to treat you like you don't know how to do your job. read more

we had really tough time with this clinic, especially the owner. I got Ben's fund to pay for the ABA therapy, and Ben's fund allowed the clinic to reimburse the therapy cost I have paid. However, the clinic did not want to do so, and the reason is, according to Daniela Ferdico, the owner of the clinic, "they want to protect all children and family in the clinic". Does anybody understand what it means?? Be aware of how your payment is used. for 1 hour therapy, they charge you for 1.5 hour therapy cost because they need 15 minutes to prepare for the therapy (turning on computer, logging in, bringing several toys to the therapy room from a motor room which is 5 feet away) and 15 min to write report. The report is a joke. No systematic data collection at all on a daily basis. I'm in Tadpole study right now with UW autism center, and Tadpole study taught me how shitty the services and programs were at Cogwheel. I'm glad I'm done with Cogwheel. The clinic has very high turn-over rate of staffs, too. Also, be prepare with surprise BIG costs here and there without any notice! It will occur quite often. If you question about the billing, you'll be yelled or treated like an beggar. read more

very positive experience - Adrienne (the manager) very flexible and accommodative, she worked with my insurance ahead of the appt - did not have any issues so far. Breanna (OTI) is super professional and great with kids. She is flexible and understanding too - i had a hard time letting kiddo crying during separation and she let me staying in the room playing "furniture" for few sessions. David's (BCBA) report addressed all my concerns. I would highly recommend this team - they gave me some hope! Everyone at clinic is very friendly and my kiddo actually started saying 'hi' and 'bye' in this place which is a huge accomplishment for him already. read more

Cogwheel is one of the institutions that we have no hesitation in giving five stars. Our son has been blessed with Autism Spectrum and Downs Syndrome. Prior to his attending Cogwheel we were pretty much on a steep learning curve as to what would be the best way to educate him and get him prepared for an independent life someday. Oddly enough it was almost by accident we found them but right off the bat we were very encouraged by the warmth and reception we received from Dr. Ferdico and her staff. But the results of his attendance and that of his therapy profile have yielded results that have been nothing short of outstanding. The staff and therapists are nothing short of miracle workers to us. Our son has simply soared and he absolutely loves going there. Everyone there is very professional and receptive to our input. They take the time to listen. I can't recommend them enough if you are looking for a place to send your special child. They would be in really good hands. read more

We have two autistic children. Our younger one is more severe and in bad need of ABA therapy, but we have been on waitlist after waitlist for months because the ABA market here is saturated. Then I saw an advertisement online for Cogwheel stating they have openings on the Eastside--I called and was thrilled to hear that they could take Noah! I promptly filled out the paperwork, gave them both of his insurance policies (Regence Platinum primary and Aetna PPO secondary via the City of Seattle), and scheduled the evaluation for my sweet boy who is SO in need. I should mention one of the biggest challenges for parents with autistic children is the severe costs associated with this condition, and in our situation that is doubled. Our two boys have 8 neurological conditions between them. It can be scary and crippling trying to manage the schedules and costs associated to meet their needs. Taylor at Cogwheel kindly sent me the benefits for both insurance policies for out-of-network coverage. Out-of-network the deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums are much higher obviously than in-network. She suggested that they could petition Aetna to pay the in-network rate of 80% due to the saturation of the Seattle area, but that would only be possible if Aetna were primary, so per her direction I cancelled his Regence policy and proceeded just with Aetna to take advantage of that possibility. His deductible was met on the Aetna plan. The initial visit took about an hour. They evaluated Noah and wanted me to pay $800 out-of-pocket for that visit. I told them no - that I'd like Aetna's response to the treatment plan prior to forking out the entire cost. Aetna wrote ABA into their contracts in 2015 so I knew that it would be covered. They then told me they needed at least 20% of the cost. I furnished a credit card to pay the 20% ($170) hoping that Aetna would cover the other 80% of the balance owed per Taylor's direction. I was then told that they wanted payment up front on a weekly basis! That was hard to digest. I was concerned that I wouldn't benefit from the write-off between the total charge and the maximum allowable per the insurance contract, but Noah's need was huge so I allowed them to proceed despite the red flags popping up. At this point, the only thing Cogwheel talked about was money but not much about what they could do for Noah. On November 12th, the day I was scheduled to review the treatment plan at Cogwheel, Taylor sent me a bill via email for $386. I sat there stunned. They had seen Noah once for one hour and I already paid the 20% ($170). Now they're trying to collect another $386 from me for the same visit?! I still don't have an EOB (explanation of benefits) from the insurance company to see what they paid. When I reached Taylor, she seemed to panic mid-call and said she couldn't help me right now. A few minutes later I received a call from Dr. Ferdico who had been part of Noah's evaluation. She stated that , I "only" needed to pay the $216 of the $386, as the earlier $170 went toward it. She didn't bother to apologize. When I asked her what the $216 balance was for in the first place, since I already paid the 20% of the visit charge, she didn't provide an answer. When I asked if I could see a claim determination from Aetna she said they didn't have one. When I asked how this works with the write-off between the total charge a provider bills and the maximum allowed by an insurance company she didn't know what that was. When I asked if they have a determination from Aetna about paying the 80% vs. 50% she said no. When I asked if I would be reimbursed after Aetna pays them if they had collected too much from me up front she didn't seem to have an answer. She also claimed they had spent 5 hours on the phone with Aetna so far on Noah's behalf, but when I asked if she had a ledger of that she told me to stop arguing with her. All she did was put it back on the "terrible" insurance companies who make it so hard on people and who don't have a network to accommodate this ABA. I'm actually not confused by the insurance company at all, but I can't be Cogwheel's cash cow, which seems to be their business model. At that point I told her that I can't possibly proceed with them. I cannot afford to give them their "guesstimated" charges prior to insurance processing on a weekly basis, especially if they don't even know if Aetna will pay at the 80% level. I reminded her that I have two children with autism and this up-front and seemingly random weekly expense is not in my comfort zone. Noah would need treatment several times a week--that charge would be huge! So I will secure another individual policy and wait for a more reputable organization to contact me. In summary, I think this is a big racket. If you take your children to Cogwheel, be sure to have a credit card with a very large credit line for them to keep on file and randomly charge. And don't ask any billing questions! read more

Cogwheel Clinic is exactly what we needed! My daughter was recently diagnosed with Dyslexia with Anxiety NOS and was referred to a different clinic for reading/speech help. After just a few visits she resisted going back to the point of throwing tantrums and crying because she was so uncomfortable with the therapist. Finally after months of searching I found Cogwheel through an ad and thought I would try a new approach. My initial consultation was amazing! Not only is the office clean, warm and inviting but the therapists and staff are top notch. They are knowledgeable, supportive and know how to approach each client so they can be successful. I had no trouble making an appointment that worked with my daughter's school schedule and better yet, my daughter LOVES going to her appointments! I highly recommend Cogwheel clinic! read more
