After a long walk from Brighton Marina to the Pier, and a lot of shopping in The Lanes, we were ready for an Afternoon Tea! This Tea Shop is in the heart of "The Lanes", a picturesque location amidst brightly coloured shops, cafes and restaurants, in narrow, winding alleyways that make for a unique shopping area. It was lucky we went in at 4.30pm... They close at 5pm, but we were welcomed in as one of the last guests before they announced they were closed. It also meant we not only got a table, but the place started clearing out before we'd finished, so we ended up being the last customers, which was nice. It's a cute, cozy little tea shop, pretty on the outside and inside, with pictures of Brighton on the walls and an eclectic mixture of teapots, milk jugs and cups. It had been many years since I'd last had a "cream tea" and this didn't disappoint. We ordered some fruit scones and some plain scones (both were yummy but I recommend the fruit ones - the raisins & sultanas are really plump and juicy!). We also tried our scones both ways - cream then jam (the Devon way), and jam then cream (the Cornish way)... I'd been brought up the Devon way, but discovered the Cornish way is actually more to my liking! Both were yummy! We didn't buy any cakes, but the cakes (as well as the scones) are made fresh daily and looked delicious. And I must say, the tea itself was fresh and superior quality - loose leaf English breakfast, rather than bagged, really makes a difference. Our server was very sweet and friendly, and then, at the end, since we were the last customers, the shop owner came out to talk to us, and was super friendly and welcoming... She asked where we were from (always fun, as I'm British, but my husband and daughter are American). Despite it being the end of her day, she didn't rush us out at all, and enjoyed chatting with us. If you must drink at Starbucks though, this is the best branch in the city. It's five minutes walk from the sea-front and so the perfect place to pick up a take away cup and head for the beach. The staff are a hundred times more friendly and knowledgable than in the other branches, the shop is clean and tidy - all the mess seems to get cleared away as soon as people leave! - and the atmosphere is more relaxed. Miraculously, the coffee tastes better here too. Maybe it's because the staff are older and more experienced or because they actually drink the coffee themselves? Who knows. The lattes still taste too milky and weak for my liking but the espressos and frappucinos have a good kick to them.

They advertise at the top of the station with a poem, and there are other station related poems posted in the window of the café. As well as teas and coffees and soft drinks they also have a full bar, which makes this station café rather better stocked than most. The food on offer is quite traditionally British if you catch my drift, e.g. The takeaway sandwiches are on bright white sliced bread, but the thing that sets this café apart is the service. It has been owned by the same couple for 20 years, and very recently was under pressure to close and be replaced by a chain. However the residents of Lewes did what they do best, stepped in and saved the café, and I'm glad they did. I went in the other morning to get a snack, and the gentleman serving me was very friendly and chatty. Just as I was about to pay, I realised I didn't have any cash on me. Rather than let me go away empty-handed he told me it was fine, I could take my items and come back and pay him another day. It is so heart warming when incidents like this happen. It is one thing to provide good service, it is another to put such a level of trust in your customer. Plus he said he liked my scarf. I went back and paid him the day after.

Small Batch = Big Win…read more After surviving some truly terrible hotel coffee, I was seriously jonesing for some good stuff. Enter Small Batch, which more than did the trick. As I posted up here for several hours in meetings -- I enjoyed a variety of items. Flat white, latte, Americano, Green tea. All exquisite, well crafted, and served with a smile. The loos are VERY clean and orderly, there is a lot of nice seating and the cafe is very stylish without being ridiculous. Comfortable and sleek. Woods and dark irons, smart folks behind the barrista bar and small sandwich and cake offerings. The vibe is mellow, to my knowledge there is no wifi -- so people are truly coming for the coffee and conversation. I'm on board.

Low and behold they gave me a box. THEREFORE, small batch staff saved the pigeon. Ok I lied a bit.. I was too scared to get the pigeon in the box, so I called the RSPCA.
