I frequently find myself referring to locations according to their proximity to a fro-yo or ice cream shop, and I plan my errands around nearby Yogurberry's or TCBY's. Anyways, this is at least my fifth summer vacationing in St. George Island, FL, and I've always felt like my frozen treat options here were lacking. There's Aunt Ebby's, which is somewhat similar to Bruster's, but in a more divey, beach town environment. It's popular, but I crave healthier options like fat free soft serve or sugar free italian ice after a long day on the beach. Upon arriving for this summer's adventure in St. George, my family immediately spotted a new cute wooden hut advertising shaved ice. It was about 6 p.m., and they were closed, but we vowed to stop by the next day. We did, and it was glorious. There were at least 30 flavors, and 4 were sugar free. The green apple was delicious, and service was friendly. At $4 a pop, it ain't cheap, but I'm happy to support the local small beach town businesses. We asked what time they usually close, and we were told about 4:30 or 5 p.m. every day. Based on this experience alone, my review would've had a higher rating. However, we returned the next day around 3:30, and it was closed. With parched throats, we sadly drove back to our beach house. We returned again today at 3 p.m., and it was closed... again. Every day we've been here, the weather has been perfectly hot and sunny, and plenty of people have been out and about. I don't get it. Along with shaved ice flavors like pink lemonade, root beer, watermelon, passion fruit, and tangerine, Island Ice offers hot dogs and chili dogs.... when they're actually open, of course. I like to play hard-to-get sometimes, but not when it comes to food.

It's not a full…read moresize grocery store but does have the basics like drinks, beer, wine, produce, bread, etc. There is a more full size Piggly Wiggly in Apalachicola (about 25 minutes away) if you need a little more complex items. Parking lot is often busy in the afternoon so just be patient, or come a little earlier in the morning.

It's a Blue Bell ice cream shop that normally serves sodas, floats, and malts from a classic fountain setup. When we visited, they weren't serving anything from the soda fountain due to the local water issue. Still, we ordered a chocolate and coffee malted, and it was excellent -- creamy, rich, and immediately familiar. It reminded me of the kind of treat I'd get with my grandfather at a neighborhood candy store or luncheonette growing up. Inside, the shop is a mix of ice cream counter, candy store, and gift shop. They sell shell collections, coconut patties, Florida-themed candy boxes, dog treats, and tourist Aplachicola T-shirts ($28 each). It's a quick, fun stop that gives you a glimpse of old-school small-town Florida. No frills -- just good ice cream and a little nostalgia.

We were fine with the information, but that was literally the only words from the people who worked there.
