My family and I went here for Mother's Day (on the Saturday, not the Sunday). It was extremely busy, but we had made a reservation, so we didn't wait long for a table. They appeared to have sufficient wait staff working, but possibly not enough staff in the kitchen, as it took about an hour for our meal to be served. Our server was super nice and very upbeat (considering she was being worked off her feet, that was pretty impressive). My Mom had a glass of wine, but we discovered that the wine listed on the menu was different from what they had in stock because the LCBO no longer carried the brands they used to serve. My Dad and brother had beer from the tap, which is what I should have had. I had a bottle of Stella, which had a best before date maybe a week before. I did point out the best before date to the server, and she offered to bring me another beer, but it tasted fine, so I let it go. Although, for a restaurant, they should probably stay on top of that a little better.
We each ordered a meal for 1 that came with rice and two entrees. I had the lemon chicken and deep fried shrimp (which came with sweet and sour sauce for dipping). I also had a spring roll as (sort of) an appetizer. Overall, the food was good. Although their lemon chicken is a whole chicken breast, breaded and fried with the lemon sauce over top. I prefer it when the chicken is in chunks, but that's a personal thing.
In general, the restaurant is run down. It's a 100+-year-old heritage building that's now a Chinese restaurant, so it's a bit of an odd duck. It's up on a rocky outcrop, so if you sat on the patio, you'd have a great view of the lake and lock. Parking is okay but gets crowded easily. If there's no parking in the lot, there's plenty across the street and it's a short walk up to the restaurant. In the winter, I'm sure it's more adventurous to get up to the parking lot! The decor and furniture are old, but in some ways, it adds a bit to the charm of the place. It is in no way a fancy place, I saw people there in sweats. And it is most definitely NOT authentic Chinese food. They don't even have chopsticks available.
This is a small town, Chinese restaurant. It's one of the few places the locals can go without driving 45 minutes into Peterborough or Lindsay. And it's open year-round (which is a big deal). And it's relatively inexpensive and they serve both dine-in and take-out. I rated the Cody Inn a 4 out of 5 because it was what I expected. 'City folk' might expect better and therefore might rate it lower, but this is not the city. read more
