LOVE this park! During the day, this place is crawling with children (naturally, because it's a park with play structures), so I tend to come with friends at night. The concrete slide is the best! At night, it's even better because you can't really see how long or steep it is, so it's always fun to bring new people here. There's always some cardboard at the bottom that people ditch after they're done, so if you don't have any, don't fret. It gets super dark, so I would suggest bringing a flashlight. I've never felt unsafe, it's just nice to see where you're going! read more

We had a nice time here. The park is not too far from the street it is just a little hidden. Older, which I means yes there are some trees here. We had a nice time besides the tots playing with my kiddo that had adults really far away. The kids were playing too rough so we left. My little guy and I even went down the cement slide. Next time we will bring light weight pants and long sleeves just in case of a scrape on that as I was nervous about my little ones bare arms. read more

A hidden gem nestled in the hills of Berkeley. On a clear day you can see the Golden Gate Bridge as you are overlooking the beautiful rose garden. Definitely a family oriented park with playgrounds, a giant slide, basketball court and plenty of picnic areas for that summer bbq. The people seem to be extra friendly as this is such a beautiful setting... I think they all leave their worries behind and just enjoy the nature, the setting the view. read more

Although the cement slide is not as great as the Seward slides in SF, it's still pretty enjoyable. They have picnic tables nearby, bbq pits, baskbetball courts and other things to make your already great warm summer days even better. read more

Another gem in the East Bay -- love the concrete slides. Get your cardboard ready and slide on down.. brings out the kid in all of us. It's right across from the Berkeley Rose Garden, so it's great to be able to meander over there. Nice place for a BBQ and picnic and some trail-walking. read more

There is a long concrete slide at this place... And every time I get on the top of the slide, my heart begin to race like a little kid. Because I know I'm in for a longest 5 second ride. It's an S shaped slide with slightly banked turns to keep you flying off the edge of the slide. There are card boards here but if you can try to bring your own waxed cardboard for that extra speed. Keep your feet on on the cardboard for maximum speed which translates to maximum excitement. After you're done, you can donate it to a kid with a worn out cardboard and watch his or her face light up. One of these days, if I see a plastic snow sled at a garage sale, I'll pick one up just for this slide. I haven't seen anyone go down the slide on a skate board but I'm pretty sure someone had done it. If anyone wants to try this, I want to be there to watch you fly off the edge of the slide or eat some sand when you plow through sand at the bottom doing 30 mph! Stick with card boards and it'll be safe and fun. Best of all... it's freeeeeeee!! read more

Pretty damn awesome. Had a BBQ here and there was plenty if things to do. Bball courts, playground, hiking trail, huge cement slide, rose garden across the street. Yeah the only down side is parking and if you plan to BBQ be sure to reserve a spot. read more

Good size park. Clean and safe. When we're in the neighborhood we like to stop by and play a little. It has a sand pit, swings, slides, nice grass, and a concrete slide which goes well if you have a piece of cardboard to slide down with. Once in awhile on a hot day if you're lucky you'll run into the guy with a ice cream cart for a nice refreshment break :). Cross the street is the Berkeley Rose Garden. This is a nice and quiet little park in North Berkeley. The shade made hanging out very comfortable. The best part is the concrete slides! They're a ton of fun. Make sure to bring some cardboard because sometimes there arent usable pieces left at the bottom by previous sliders. I didn't BBQ, but I remember there being a little spot to, and I'd love to come back & just make a nice afternoon of it! read more

What an awesome park! Just two weeks after taking the family to Disneyland, it was quite refreshing to see the kids so excited about something we did not have to pay for or wait on line for two hours. Although I must say I was a tad surprised at some of the ages of the kids on the alpine slide. It was fun to watch. Lot's of fun! Great park. (And since it is in Berkeley, you can be as weird as you like. You will fit right in). read more

Love this park! It's good for my three year old and my nine month old. They have a big open area for running around, playing with a ball or just relaxing with a picnic. It's sunken down from the street, so you don't have to worry about your child getting near cars. And the concrete slide is fun for my husband. ha. read more

we love it here! we bring the kids all the time! i love the huge slide carved out of the hillside (please bring some cardboard to share ) i love how the tot lot is fully enclosed and my curious 17 month old still can't figure how to get out. the tunnel that leads from the park to the rose garden is full of fun for the little kids. Also if you see a park ranger...ask him the route to the hidden waterfall up in the hills. its really cute and a neat little experience. don't bring the little ones...only the good walkers read more

This park has a little bit for everyone. It has a gated-off area with wooden structures for little kids, slides and monkey bars for older kids, and a forested area with lots of trails and beautifully preserved scenes of nature for adults. There is no specific one person that I would recommend this park to, because everyone likes a little part of it. There is a giant concrete slide which never gets old. There also is a beautiful rose garden on the other side of the hill (not to mention the echoing tunnel under the hill that connects them!) The trails are extremely quiet, and go far away from the main park so there isn't any kids in the area. The roads are riverside, through the woods and through one or two fields optimal for picnics. There are also beautifully designed wooden / stone bridges that zigzag over different streams. There is no one person I would recommend this beautiful park to, so here are a few of the many people who would enjoy spending time here: kids, teens, parents, hikers, meditators, sunbathers, dog-walkers, families, tourists, and countless others. That is why I give this park a huge thumbs up! read more

When my kid pops (any day now) - this is the park that I'll be taking him to. It's clean, plenty of other families and their kids around as well as friendly four-leggeds. Though, you have to keep them on leash. I chanced upon the Tamalpais (stairs) path which was a pleasant surprise. Though, I still have yet to find that concrete slide! Recommend spending a lunch hour here if you're nearby and bring kids, if any as well as your pets. read more

I played here as a kid, and now I take my kids here myself. The one thing you have to watch out for in this park is that it is not fenced in, and dogs and unwanted people can approach your children. But lets face it, that can happen almost anywhere. go through the tunnel to one of the most beautiful sights in the bay area, the Berkeley Rose Garden. This is a treat for you after the kids have rolled down the lawn and gone down the cement slide a hundred times. read more

I am an original California Girl having grown up in San Francisco. My parents use to take my brothers and sisters and I to these slides in the 70's. I am now 44. I still have a lot of great memories as a matter of fact we were just speaking of these slides this morning. Imagine 5 of us coming down the slides at one time or racing down the slides head first on some cardboard. It appears there is a lot more going on at the park now, but when we were kids the slides were just enough. I look forward to the day when I can possibly return just to climb to the top and slide down again. We could never remember exactly where they were located, however, I always remembered in Berkeley - thank God for the Internet. Well I hope that the slides will bring great memories for anyone that tries them. Unfortunately, we don't have anything like it in North Carolina!!! California always the best!!! read more

WARNING...that slide they are all loving, gave my children horrible burns, pussing, open wound, swollen, wrap around their arm burns. Make sure your children are dressed in LONG PANTS AND LONG SLEEVED SHIRTS, with CLOSED TOE SHOES. Three days later, and my 5 year old is still in pain. It is a lovely park with nice amenities, though the Restrooms were DISGUSTING. read more

Great park for a picnic with a big group of friends. I love the concrete slide and sports facilities- basketball court and baseball field. There are 2 attractions at this park worth mentioning. Imagine a bunch of physics grad students, drinking beer at their annual physics picnic and then discovering a gravitational assisted human wave guide ... er, I mean a slide. This slide was built waaay back, in the 1920s I think, back when kids got hurt on playground equipment and lived to tell about it. After a century of weathering, the first time you go down the slide, you may not be very impressed since the friction of the concrete surface holds you back if you are in jeans. But the secret is (a) sit on a piece of cardboard and (b) line the bottom of the cardboard with wax paper. Do this about 20 times and the slide will open up and take you to the next level. You will go so fast, you will probably fly off the side of the last curve of the flume. Be warned, after the slide is primed with sufficient wax lubrication, little kids will no wax paper will also go really fast and I've seen them wipe out in tears at the end since they go flying into the sand. This slide is like the Steward Slides of San Francisco, which have huge exposure on Yelp... The second attraction is a secret hidden waterfall, the only one in Berkeley, but you'll have to find it yourself. read more

you have to get off the beaten path - thats the way I live my wife. people just take their kids and play in the playground. go beyond. there is a trail that takes you to a secret waterfall that is 30 feet high, there are also trails covered in redwoods as well as steps that tkae you to one of the most beautiful streets in berkeley. you can do a nice loop with the kids that will take you by rose steps a series of med. homes that have great views of the bay. read more

great place fo kids of all ages...i brought my 7 year old twin cousins here and they had a blast...if your child is scared to go down the slide go with em! it is so fun...cardboard to slide down on are provided for you...a short walk over is the rose garden...my cousin started singing beauty and the beast theme song...very cool walk through and well kept...tennis lovers too can play in this scenic place...great way to kill an hour or two of time...also great place to take a date too... read more

As much as I loathe Berkeley, this is a place that I would never get tired of if I go with the right people.It is my favorite "secret" area in Berkeley. I'm a large kid at heart and I love exploring, so naturally I enjoy the large concrete slide, the swings, the whole playground, actually. However, the park is not the only perk of Codornices Park. The most adventurous way to reach this park is to enter through the tunnel at the base of Rose Gardens. It can be really impressive to someone with whom you want to share the adventure. After completing your quests on the playground, you can venture up the hills/stairs and cross the bridge just to do some good old fashion exploring and trekking. You used to be able to cross a path and find a marvelous secret area, but a fallen tree might be blocking it currently, or I do not remember how to reach that area, but have been there twice. Look for a path that follows the stream and find a bridge and a large stone step way to reach the top. If you ever find what is beyond there, you can witness pure beauty and it is a wonderful photographic opportunity as well. Pros: Playground, concrete slide, picnic tables, basketball courts, wide open field, beautiful scenery, across from Rose Garden. Cons: You should go to the bathroom before you get here; the best secret of this park may be blocked. If you have a Berkeley bucket list, make sure this park is on it. It is worth it. read more

Really awesome little park after walking up a semi-treacherous hill from the downtown Berkeley BART (since it's a park you ARE walking, right?). Codornices seems to always have people during daylight hours, from the basketball courts to the concrete slides, and even accommodating some toddler birthday parties in the picnic shelters. We spent our time in the upper field between the baseball diamond and the hill playing football and soccer. I wish I live closer to the park and knew people who lives close so we could have regular pick up games. Take advantage if you and your friends are nearby! read more

The concrete slide is what makes this park, and the tunnel to the Rose Garden. The kids really liked the slide, and they played there for a VERY LONG TIME. The only problem was that a camp was being held there, and some middle aged kids were being cussed out by their counselor - not a lot of fun to see. I have such fond memories of visiting this park as a child and now I get to share it with my own child. There are 2 tall cement slides (my kid is too small, but I enjoy them), a big kid playground, and a tot lot with a sandbox. There are also basketball courts and a large grassy areas. I don't give this park 5 stars because the bathrooms are disgusting! EEEW. I have heard you can walk through the tunnel to the rose garden to find much cleaner bathrooms. I will have to check that next time I visit and report back. read more

One of my favorite east bay parks. Great field area , play structures, baseball field, basketball court, cement slide, and a short trail circuit. Cross the street to enjoy the Rose garden and it's tennis courts. It can get crowded on weekends. read more

I remember the concrete slide. The people I watched used waxed paper instead of cardboard, or, nothing at all. Age didn`t seem to make any difference. What I liked best were the huge swings right next to the slide. After my family and I were done with the swings, the people sliding said, "swing time" and went over to the swings. read more

My dad first took me and my lil' brother here when I was about 3 or 4. Since then it has been my FAVORITE park. Although, I do miss the old wood structure they used to have there, and I wish they hadn't of fenced off the park where the playground meets to hill up to the trails (i used to climb up it when i was 5 thinking i was cool). I love it there, everything from the concrete slide (REALLY, WHERE DO YOU ACTUALLY SEE THOSE?!), the swings, the softball field, and the trails. I love it. And the tunnel to the rose garden still kind of scares me. But it's totally worth going through because the view from the rose garden on a clear day is spectacular :] Thank you Berkeley for still keeping me happy after all these years. read more
