I would give zero stars if possible. It is basically 40 hours of lecture and you are encouraged to not ask questions. The environment is toxic and does not foster creativity or inclusiveness. If you have no prior coding experience you will not succeed in this place. They do not teach or explain theories. They only make you watch videos and your instructor mentor is actually in another country. I was there for a week and didn't learn anything. Quit and got my tuition back but still lost it on the $1000 deposit. I quit a good job that led to a lot of opportunities for a lot of my excoworkers to take this course and instead I got played by them. The instructors don't even teach they have the other students in the program ahead of you help you write code. I started Coding Dojo with big hopes but not a ton of confidence. I thought "can I really learn three new stacks in three months?" I own a web development company and manage a team of developers who create powerful web and marketing applications for our clients. I have an MIS degree and a lot of experience managing coding projects, designing websites in Joomla/Wordpress and editing code but I had never created a web application from scratch; I had always directed developer teams and used existing tools like Wordpress or Joomla when I was doing my own projects. I was a student at Coding Dojo about a year ago, and despite the stress and frustrations with the lessons/assignments and whatnot, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the dojo. I understand the frustration that people have had with the dojo and not being able to obtain a job in the coding field after completing the boot camp, but you only get the most out of the course if you put in the time and effort. With that being said, attending the dojo definitely altered my mindset to becoming a better problem solver, and I utilized this newfound mindset to continue learning technologies that would lead me to obtaining a career in tech (in this case, I focused mainly on React.js, which the dojo did not have a curriculum in during the time which I attended). The relationships that I developed during my time at the dojo also prove to be invaluable, as I continue to maintain contact with some of my cohort-mates. Despite that not all of us continued to pursue a career in tech after the boot camp ended, we continue to push ourselves and motivate each other towards whatever goals that we wish to pursue. As for the instructors, it really depends on your learning style. Some people learn better with someone verbally going over materials, while others are self-sufficient with simply reading text and following examples on-screen. Some instructors simply read over the materials already displayed on the curriculum, while others have smaller group activities to ensure that the students have a better understanding of the material of the day (the latter method of which I prefer). I had a great experience with Coding Dojo at their San Jose location. I had applied to several coding bootcamps, but made the decision to attend the Dojo based on location and price. I have no regrets! The instructors and staff did a great job of welcoming us from the start. However, be known that this is a very hands-off learning process. Do not expect to get an answer to a question whether the instructors know it or not. They are meant to help guide you and show you the proper way to learn to code and teach yourself to be a self-sufficient developer. My cohort went through PHP, MEAN, and Ruby on Rails. We were not given an option to choose which technology stacks we wanted to do, however I believe that has changed now. If given the option, I would have went with Python, MEAN, and iOS/Ruby. There is not much demand in the job market for PHP, especially amongst startups. Python and Javascript are the two main languages that seem to be the most in demand by companies. Make sure to study algorithms and take it seriously when the instructors do a daily algorithm. Studying that will be taking your first steps to becoming an engineer. Also, you get out what you put in; thus make sure you stay the full day and put in a full day's effort. Do not get stressed if you fall behind the rest of the class, just try to focus and ask for help when needed. A coding bootcamp is not for everyone...It is 12 weeks out of your life where you are spending a minimum of 10-12 hours a day at your computer or in class. When I started look at the different boot camps Coding Dojo was the best fit for me. I was looking for the fastest way to pick up new technologies I was not familiar with. And I loved their approach of teaching - "Strength trough struggle" and they bought my attention with doing algorithms every day. I remember my first day at the Dojo. I was so frustrated, a lot of going on, so much material to learn, new people around, do this and then that and so on. I realize that I have to adopt really fast. And I did. The things to remember going through the program are have enough of rest, eat on time, do your best to understand the material, look at your classmates code, see different approaches to the problem, work in groups and remember why you are doing this, remember your goals so you can keep going! I have learned a lot during the last three months. A lot of new technologies, how to use them. But the best things that happened to me during this time is meeting so many great people and getting to know them. This boot camp sucks. I attended with some coding experience. The instructors don't explain stuff well there were multiple times I advised the teacher I was not getting the material and the answer I got was it will make since. The school is also relatively expensive. I took the course with planning to change career fields and I feel I barely learned anything more than what I already new. I came into the Coding Dojo bootcamp with very little prior coding experience. However, I found out that becoming a good developer is possible even if that person had totally different background. I also came from a different background and decided to change my career to Web developer after taking a basic Python course from online. One of the reasons I want to become a web developer is that I can create whatever I can think of with coding. In order to learn more and improve my coding skills, I decided to attend a coding bootcamp. The reasons I chose Coding Dojo were that it offers 3 full stacks and also has a great curriculum. I gained a lot of knowledge and learned a lot from there within 14 weeks. The instructors are really helpful and knowledgeable. Their teaching strategies are really helping us to become efficient developers. Their 20 minutes rule is training us to become independent and self-sufficient developers since we have to figure out how to fix the bugs and how to improve our codes on our own by reading documents online when we work in tech industry. When it was close to the first day of school i did not feel like i was ready so i asked if i could join the later class that starts in a month. They tried to act like it was their decision of what i could do and refused to refund me back my deposit. I had to report them to the BBB to have them give me a refund. I was extremely pleased with the way things turned out. I knew I would learn a lot and I'd be challenged, but I didn't know I'd have the amount of confidence I do now. The support from staff and my fellow cohort-mates was phenomenal and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The atmosphere was always positive and welcoming. Three stacks in three months seemed ridiculous at the time, but I got there and I got there with a huge amount of confidence. Even at times when I couldn't see the finish line, pushing through the struggle paid off twice as much. There was plenty of opportunity to grow as a person and of course as a developer. I recently graduated and am freshly entering the tech world, so I don't know how the tech industry is as a whole, but I really enjoyed the environment at Coding Dojo. The instructors and my fellow students were all very friendly, and the vibe was generally very relaxed and easy going. There is a biegarten literally a 1 minute walk away and that also made the experience extra fun. With that said, learning to code requires dedication and persistance. One of the rules at the Coding Dojo is that when you are coding, you need to first struggle for 20 minutes before asking help from an instructor or TA. You can ask a fellow student, but you guys must also struggle for 20 minutes first. This may seem counter intuitive too many at first, but in my opinion this is a great policy. This really teaches you to become more self reliant, creative in searching for solutions, and a better problem solver. This is also a simulation of the coding environment in the real world. BUT with that said, if you're completely stuck on something and you gave your best effort, definitely ask for help after 20 minutes. There's no point in being stuck for longer than that. The TAs and instructors that I've worked with have all been very intelligent and helpful. They can find the problems in your code no problem, but they want you to try by yourself first. When you actively engage your obstacles, that's how you really internalize what your doing. If someone just handed you all the answers, it may feel good at first but it would be hindering your long-term growth. I'm a big fan of the learning platform offered by the Dojo. I've heard different opinions from various people, but for me it provided me all the tools to delve into coding and eventually build web apps. I personally learn a lot better by doing projects as opposed to heavy lecture based curriculum. The Dojo provides demos and lectures, but I still prefer learning by reading and doing. Before I came to the dojo, I learned html/css/jquery, basic javascript and python through code academy but nothing related to servers or databases. In fact, I've never even heard of many of the technologies we learned. By going through the Dojo, I've been able to develop web apps that are currently deployed (online) which is awesome in such a short amount of time. Still, with that said, it took a lot of hard work and long hours (70-90 hours a week for me). Nothing will be handed to you. Just because you enroll doesn't mean you'll magically become an awesome coder. You have to earn and struggle through every obstacle and achievement you make. Ok I feel like I've started rambling a bit. My take home message is the Coding Dojo provides a great environment to learn. You have to embrace struggling because coding is hard. I was very nervous and scared when I came in the first morning. I was 42 years old, a woman, and no prior experience with programming. Computers were for checking email, getting on Facebook, and buying things on Amazon. I arrived early and saw one other person sitting in the fundamental cohort area. And it was another woman! Or course, I chose the seat next to her and ended up sitting next to her for all three stacks. We found each other's typos, struggled through assignments, stayed late, and laughed together. And I imagine we will share each other's struggles and joys while going through the process of finding a job. I have thoroughly enjoyed the comradery and atmosphere at the Dojo. It is relaxed but we are still expected to learn and get through the assignments. Anytime I was stuck on an assignment, there was always a fellow student to ask for help. And it was very useful to try to help someone else who had a question. It would reinforce what I had learned or if I had actually learned it. The instructors are friendly and approachable. They were there to help if needed but expected us to help each other and use Google first. I cannot believe the things we were able to learn and build during our time at the Dojo. read more

In 3 and a half months I learned HTML, CSS, JQuery, BootStrap, Pythong (Flask and Django), Mean stack, and Ruby on Rails. They encourage copy pasting instead showing you the way to learn and be able to figure it out later. the platform is terrible as well, i learned more with $10 Udemy course then whole section of their Python or JavaScript. way over priced, since they don't do job guarantee. I came into the program with no prior coding experience (I knew what an html opening/closing tag was, but that's about it). I finished undergrad with a degree in Psychology (heavy on neuroscience) and a minor in dance. I was pre-law, took the LSATs, and realized that that path was not quite for me. I was interested in marketing and curious about the tech industry, so after graduating in August I began working for a tech startup in Mountain View. While marketing is definitely interesting, what I really wanted was to learn to build the app (the startup's main product was an iOS app) and work on its more technical aspects. So I talked to the CEO of my company about his experience and suggestions (he had a master's degree in CS from Stanford as well as plenty of experience in the field), took an HTML/CSS class from Codecademy, a tech/media law course from Coursera (to get familiarized with the history, economics, and legal issues of the field) and wanted to learn more. Learning online was free, however not as effective as I had hoped when it came to coding. So I did more research and found myself at Coding Dojo's open house. The rest, as they say, is history. The hours sounded intense, however the program's curriculum and approach seemed promising. So I took loans, signed up, and gave my boss a few weeks' notice. As other students have said, you get what you put into the program. The curriculum is fast-paced and there is much information to absorb in a very short span of time. However, if you give it your all, there is so much to learn! The tools and skills I have gained here over the course of the program are incredibly useful, and quite frankly more than I thought I could learn in a year, let alone a few months. The instructors are very approachable and interested in the students' success. One of best aspects of this program is its flexibility. Unlike university, here the focus is learning, not earning a grade/certificate. If you don't put in the work, that is your own loss. Update This place is a scam. If you have no coding experience you will fail. The way they trick people is to offer former students a $1,000 referral bonus so they make it sound good to recover some of the money they wasted going there. They are way understaffed and to compensate for that there favorite thing to say is "if you haven't tried and struggled for a couple hours don't ask us for help." You would think for the price you pay for the bootcamp they would teach you hands on but all you get is a cubicle and the online platform which is not helpful. They expect you to learn Html, CSS, and Javascript in the first week. It took me 3 months of self studying to learn Javascript to the point they expected and they had about 10 slides and an easy assignment to make you feel like you are learning. All I got out of this was a huge bill and in no way was I even close to being hireable. After a few months I could no longer try to learn this and just ended up going back to my old job. I joined Coding Dojo because I ran into a wall when trying to learn programming on my own. I was really excited about the idea of learning 3 languages in a short amount of time. The environment that Coding Dojo puts students in, fosters collaboration and a lot of pair programming. The instructors and TAs aren't going to hold your hand through this program. You will have to be very diligent and organized with your time. If you go into this program with finding a job and building a career as a developer, you seriously need to put the time in and forget about outside distractions. Because all of the instructors and TAs went through the program, they were pretty good at answering questions about assignments. Some of my classmates did not have any programming background, but by week 3/week 4, they were caught up and comfortable with the language. Take advantage of these hackathons and project weeks. During the short amount of time, you will learn a lot and reinforce what you know. You will also be exposed to the process and environment of working in a small team. I came to Coding Dojo trying to redefine myself, and it helped me do just that. I had a bit of experience programming before, but nothing formal, and most done on my own. It's not easy. If you don't have the dedication to invest a sizable amount of time, you will not succeed. The amount of time people put into this program really shows in terms of ability and results. It's supposed to be a struggle, but like their slogan says: strength through struggle. Even with my previous experience there were plenty of times that I just wanted to bang my head on the table. But the great thing about coming in every day and putting in a decent amount of time is having the TAs and instructors there to help you. It's also great knowing that your cohort-mates are also struggling with you; it shows that what you're trying to achieve is not something just anyone can do. It's fun. I truly enjoyed myself here, and I've gained a number of good friends through my cohort and the instructors. I met a lot of different people and learned a lot not only through the platform but through them. There were times we didn't get a lot of work done, but it was okay. Stay away from the ping pong table. It's rewarding. Seeing yourself build projects from scratch that you originally had no idea about and probably thought were close to witchcraft is incredibly satisfying. And when you look back at how far you've come, you'll wonder why you ever doubted yourself to begin with. This program IS for everyone. The instructors do a great job of not leaving anyone behind. Previously I had a college degree in Computer Information Systems, but did not feel like I was prepared for the real world at all. When compared with other bootcamps in bay area, no one teaches three different Full Stacks within 14 Weeks. Thats one of the main reason for me to choose Dojo instead of other bootcamps. My class had some really incompetent people in it, and so the environment is not very rigorous because you're always catering to the least amongst you. This school is definitely set up as a business, so they want to maximize profit more than anything else. Here's something else that really disturbed me... ZERO of our instructors had any real-world coding job experience. Not one had held a tech job outside of Coding Dojo! I found that mind-boggling. How do you teach someone to be something that you've never been? Thirdly, trying to learn 3 Full Stacks in 12 weeks is an ABSOLUTE JOKE. Every other bootcamp focuses on 1 Stack for 12-14 weeks, and Dojo is going to focus on 3, with the low-quality of student that they bring in? It's just a pipe dream. I really cannot recommend this school. Even their instructors don't go work in the tech sector. read more

Location: Seattle, WA Coming into the program without any coding experience was a little overwhelming at first. Though the struggles at first were tough, the progress I made in the end was truly remarkable to me. I didn't believe the people who told me while I was limping my way through the PHP stack, that it will get easier and things were would eventually start clicking. It wasn't until I wrote my first callback function in the third week of the MEAN stack that I started to believe that it could be true. The first few days of the RUBY stack were more of the same struggle, until I hunkered in for a weekend and pushed through the assignments and came out being able to write code without thinking much about it. The whole experience was eye opening, and since I was willing to put the effort into the material, I was able to come out with knowledge I had no idea I could have. The instructors during the dojo were a big part of the experience, and helped a ton along the way. They were always there to answer a question along the way, but never just gave you the answer. They really practiced what the dojo speaks when they say "strength through struggle". I am glad I invested the time into this experience and am really looking forward to what life has in store for me next. This experience will travel with me for a long time. read more

After realizing I wanted to grow my technical knowledge in coding I decided to enroll in Coding Dojo. I have had little experience here and there and wanted to boost my skills to further my passion in to web development. Being at the Dojo for three months taught me a lot about fundamentals and multiple stacks where I feel it would have taken longer had I done it myself with out the resources and support they provide. The instructors have been great motivators and support through my whole process here. And the platform is always improving, providing more detailed instructions and descriptions to follow. Personally, I have had some struggles and there were times where I really wanted to give up, but being able to talk to classmates and teachers really kept me on track. I also really like the fact that the Dojo is open 24 hours allowing me to spend extra time on holidays and weekends. Since there is so much to learn I often found myself spending over 10-12 hours a day including weekends. I really enjoyed the algorithms as well, doing them in the morning provided daily exercises to start your brain up in the morning. read more

Before coming to Coding Dojo I was a high school teacher in Hawaii. While working in the classroom, I had so many ideas for web applications but I had no way to make them a reality. Codecademy and Udemy only scratched the surface and didn't teach me the bigger concepts involved in creating a fully functional app. I decided that I wanted to learn how to code in a more formal setting so I did some research on my options. Going back to a university was an option, but would take too long (about 3 years or more) and would be too expensive. I heard about software bootcamps and started to look at Seattle, since I knew it was a great city for tech. I chose Coding Dojo because the staff was so friendly, and I was impressed by the three full-stack curriculum. Now that I'm graduated and have received my black belt, I have created multiple functioning apps and am confident that I can make many of my ideas into a full-functioning product. My cohort at Coding Dojo Silicon Valley began towards the end to September 2015 and concluded on the first week of January 2016. I accepted a full-time offer as a Web Developer at a digital agency on February 20th, 2016. I was very hesitant about joining a bootcamp, I knew I wanted to enroll in one eventually, but prolonged the process for a very long time because I wanted to feel perfectly prepared for this expensive decision. After completing the bootcamp, I can say with complete confidence and honesty that enrolling in Coding Dojo was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my entire life. I was hesitant, and when I talked to people about wanting to embark on this journey their eyes would often times pop out of their skulls when I told them how much the 14 week program would cost. However, I am so glad that I took the leap and am forever grateful for the challenging and fulfilling environment that Coding Dojo offered. I cannot compare my experience to other bootcamps, and I can't compare my experience to other Coding Dojo locations, but I can give you insights into my personal experience at Coding Dojo Silicon Valley. One thing that routinely stood out to me was that the instructors truly care about you, and your success. If you are willing to put in the work, your instructors, TA's and fellow students are there to catch you when you fall. I was often impressed with the patience and enthusiasm of my instructors. No question is stupid and no question was out of the scope of conversation. Want to discuss a framework that isn't in the curriculum? No problem, find an instructor and ask away. I came into the bootcamp with a good amount of experience with HTML, CSS and a tiny bit of Javascript. As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to be perfectly prepared before entering the bootcamp. I wanted to be at least have a surface level familiarity with most of the technologies that I would be using throughout the bootcamp. I think there is a fine line to walk here. I fully believe that you will get more out of any bootcamp if you have some experience with web development or programming. In my cohort, people with experience excelled, and those with zero experience had a tougher time. However, I would not prolong the application process for too long. Give yourself 2-3 months to nail down the basics and then dive into the bootcamp. You will learn more in that environment than you ever thought possible. Put simply, Coding Dojo Silicon Valley provided a really fun and positive working environment. They allowed me to come in and work on stuff before my cohort even started. And, I continued to go there every day after my cohort ended, so I could work on projects and my job search. To this day, almost a year later, I still stop by to say hello and am greeted by the friendly instructors. read more

While the learning platform is not perfect and can sometimes be confusing, overall, my experience was a very positive one. The Dojo does a great job of teaching you things that would take much longer to learn on your own, providing a great learning environment. While somewhat hesitant about joining the coding work, I feel very capable having made some real world applications. The things they say about this place are true, in that you get out what you put into it. They won't hold your hand, if you want to excel you have to put in the time, effort, and determination. And that definitely should when you compared those that would consistently do algorithms and those that wouldn't or comparing how well they do on the belts, moving forward in the platform, ect. This is especially true in debugging your programs, there was a huge difference by the end in those that tried to do it on their own and those that always asked for help. In closing, If you want to get your money's worth out of Coding Dojo, you have to put your all in to get it, you can't just sit back and expect them to somehow magically give you these skills, do that, and it'll be worth it. read more

I loved my time at the coding dojo. I learned how to learn which is the most valuable of all the skills I learned. I now have motivation and determination to learn other programming languages. There seems to be no obstacle that I cannot get over. I am looking forward to continuing my journey as a coder and learning many more technologies in the future. It was a huge challenge but it would've been more a challenge to learn all I did without Coding Dojo's help. Having a fun and considerate cohort made it a lot easier for me. I guess I got lucky with that one. The TA's and instructors also helped a lot in overcoming many of the topics and concepts I used to consider extremely intimidating. Angular was a scary monster lurking in the shadows until the platform exposed angular for the beautiful, majestic framework that it is. There was a lot I had trouble with but I learned the hard way that any concept can be understood if you stick to it and always remind yourself to never, ever, give up. There were many times I wanted to give up. There were many times I got mad. But all the anger in the world can't get me closer to my goals and thanks to Coding Dojo, I learned a lot more than the goals I set out for. I surprised myself with the knowledge I've learned up till now and the amazing part is, Coding Dojo also taught me even after these three months are over, this is only the beginning of the journey. read more

My experience at the dojo was more than I expected. It doesn't get any better than being able to work on projects with other coding dojo students and struggling as well as figuring out the concepts together and go through the whole program together. I definitely am going to continue studying the platform with the other stacks that I did not do during the bootcamp. Coding dojo has made a great experience for me and allowed for a great environment to learn the content. I enjoyed the platform and the projects that was involved with the program. All the concepts helped me better understand the fundamentals of the web. I made some good networks with the coding dojo as well as the connections made with the students who were at the dojo going through the same experience with me. It was great to work with people who wanted to pursue similar goals as me in learning web development and coding as a team. Something that my experience lacked was the bootcamp life which was because of my location and having to travel back and forth a long way to home. But that didn't make my experience any worse.
