I agree that this place really needs to kick their food up a notch. Their salsa is pretty well-balanced with occasional chunks of tomato which was enjoyable but they need a much spicier option. Nothing to say about the chips and the pickled carrots were nowhere need pickled enough. They were barely tangy, not spicy at all, and still raw and crunchy. I ordered the Cocula which included a taco, torta, and tamale with sides of bean and rice. The best thing about the dish was that they really don't skimp on their proportions. The torta was covered in veggies and pork with a tablespoon of sour cream and guacamole on top. My pastor taco was probably the best thing out of the three and was decently seasoned although I've had much more flavorful pastor elsewhere. The taco could have used some more moisture as the meat seemed a little dry. The tamale was the weakest part as the chicken inside was meager, dry, and honestly flavorless. A real chicken tamale should be filled with warm gooey chicken cooked in a spicy green chile sauce! The overall best thing on the whole plate was actually the beans which are greasy as heck but sooo filled with flavor it was hard to ration it throughout my meal. The rice wasn't bad as well, not the weak over-cooked tomato-sauce rice you get at cheap restaurants. Overall, the food here is somewhere between average and good. If I could, I'd give this restaurant 3.5 stars as it's better than average but I'll probably never crave this place like I do my favorite restaurants. It's a nice clean place to visit with friends perhaps but i'm looking for a new go-to place in this city and this place isn't it. read more

I love Cocula. It was my first Mexican restaurant experience when I came for a job interview down the street. This is where I fell in love with Chilaquiles and several restaurants later, they're still my favorite Chilaquiles...with salsa verde, not red. Also, great margs, and 1.49 for a big ass coffee with cream and sugar in the mornings. They use the same styrofoam cup for coffee as they do for the fountain drinks. The waitresses are super sweet and the manager (I think) is very nice. You can definitely have a super hearty meal there for under 10. read more

Saw this place while walking from the California pink line station to the Criminal Courts builidng for jury duty, came back on the lunch break and glad I did. Inexpensive but very nice food, with sort of a west-coast style. Ingredients very fresh; the salad you get on the side of the dinner plates is more elaborate than at most Mexican places (cucumber & avacado in addition to lettuce & tomato). I had the enchiladas suizas, and the cheese, sauce, and ground beef-potato mix was everything I was looking for. Chips great and homemade, salsa pretty good. I got a free cup of chicken soup with my chips, so that's bonus. Service was cheerful and incredibly fast. All around a good experience. And with the fast service I was done in plenty of time to hike back to court. read more

It was such a rip off I ordered a michelada and I didn't even taste the beer it was all tomato. I told my server about the issue, she immediately had an attitude about me even suggesting my full beer wasn't poured in. She said it was the ice even with the ice that means I would have beer left over which should of been left at my table, no left over beer was left at my table. I even ordered 2 extra beers to compliment my miche and the owner still had a bad attitude about me even bringing up the issue. I will never step foot in there again!!! Super bad service! I come here on Wednesdays for the 5.99$ frozen margarita special. They usually taste like they have no alcohol in them so I order another shot of tequila on the side, so I know the alcohol is going into my drink. Today is Friday and I came for frozen margaritas. I asked the waitress how much they'd be. The menu said 11.95$. The waitress said 13.95$. I asked how many shots are in the drink. She said two. I said to please make the drink virgin and bring me the two shots, because for 14$, I want two shots of tequila for sure. She said it's premade and if it's not strong enough, she'll add some more. I said "no", " bring me what I asked". And she did. I got the frozen mango margarita with 2 shots of tequila on the side 3 times. She informed me after my second one that " next time you come and order like this we will charge you golden, which is 15.95$". I then ordered a third and she said "we will charge you golden". I said " I believe you were referring to the next time I come here. ". So she brought the third and final drink with 2 shots on the side. I get the receipt. I thought it was nice that she only charged 11.95$ for each drink (!!!) which is still really really expensive. But then, they charged me 2$ for their chips and salsa, which I've never gotten charged for. So, they suck. And I feel like I arm wrestled all afternoon over pricing of a drink, which in all my years I've never experienced. I left no tip. I would have tipped if they didn't charge me for their complimentary chips. I want to say I won't go back but I will. They'll probably do something vile to my drinks because of this review. read more

Horchatta!! Best I have had in a while. Order almost anything here and it will be good. Like the food love the atmosphere with friendly waitresses. Tortas can be hit or miss though. Some days the bread is fresh, and others it's ok. Also try the Milanesa torta( good breading). read more

The food is good. Yes! But not worth it. The old man at the counter is rude & has horrible customer service. He changes prices and talks to you however he wants. I've been there 3 times & i get the same thing every time. So i was just there & the price was almost $5 more than usual & i asked him why. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and OMG they were delicioso! So much flavor and so well prepared. My BF got the chicken burrito and he said it was one of the best he's ever had. Stopped in because we couldn't resist the name (insert juvenile snicker here). We pulled into the private lot (nice) and walked in to find the location really nice, clean, and friendly. I went to wash my hands and came back to be happily surprised not only by the usual basket of tortilla chips and salsa that you'd expect, but also a cup of a really nice chicken and vegetable soup and a big bowl of limes. The waitress that we had was extremely friendly. Audrey and I made the effort (and it is an effort) to order/converse in Spanish and she actually happily went along with us. I've noticed in many establishments staff will just answer you in English even if you make the effort to speak in Spanish, so it was nice to actually get the chance to dust off the seldom-used language skills. Aside from nice wait staff, the food itself proved to be excellent. I had a pork stew that almost tasted like it had a mole, and Audrey T. had some kind of chicken dinner that looked awesome (and disappeared as quickly as mine did). Margaritas at Cocula were quite strong, but not in a sip-and-gag kind of way; I'm sure a pitcher would have put us out of commission for quite a while, but we had things to do. I would definitely recommend hitting this place up with a small group of friends that enjoy good food and strong drinks. I'm putting the price as moderate because I'm including the drinks, which you really shouldn't miss out on; otherwise it's a pretty cheap, large meal. read more

Please I am saving your time not to come to this location. My tacos were very blend no flavor whatsoever I had to trench it with salsa. My sister enchilada was hard as a rock . Also my sister and I got mixed drinks a piña colada and mines a paloma. Her drink had no flavor and no liquor. My drink was light with liquor which ok fine. I told my sister she should have the waitress and the bartender (FYI I think she's the owner) to ask the waitress if it's a virgen drink or taste it because trust me this drink did not have no liquor. The waitress kindly took it back and guess what that drink once again was not a regular piña colada you would order at another restaurant. Ok, I feel as if the owner didn't care on satisfactory. So I decided to play music with Touch tunes, once I played the first song I couldn't hear the music at all. I asked the waitress if she can put the volume up she said sure ok. Guess what volume went from a 2 to 5. Finally I come to my sense this place is not worth my time and owners don't care about a customer coming back. 15 minutes later the waitress comes back to give an explanation why the music wasn't loud enough. I told the waitress I been here a couple of times so it's strange that's now a problem. I told her I'm sure if other customers had the same problem they sure wouldn't like it. I was not going to leave a tip but felt bad not tipping a hard working person who was "trying to provide service". So as we walked towards the exit I was going to hand the waitress her tip. Just like in the pictures shown, there are huge amounts of cheese thrown all over the food!!! Just melting with cheese!!! If you're not a fan of cheese all over your tacos, make sure you let the server know. Our server was really nice , not much interaction just takes the order :) . Prices were decent, 11.95 for a combination plate. I had the enchilada , tostada and steak taco . It came with rice and beans .. The rice was very flavorful not salty or greasy and had the frozen vegetables in it and the beans weren't watered down and didn't taste like it came from a can . What I didn't like was even though i received a nice portion of food, it looked like slop thrown on the plate. The steak taco didn't have any flavor in it but dripped out with the grease and it was served on a hard shell with shredded cheese tomato and lettuce . The enchiladas sauce had a basic flavor wasn't very spicy or authentic , but for only having one, I had to search for it underneath the beans , sauce and cheese that was thrown all over the place.. I had the chicken tostada , it had sour cream , more beans, lettuce ,tomato and avocado slice, shredded cheese! .... I guess to sum it up, the flavor of the food had Taco Bell feeling. I ordered for pick-up after work. So once I get there over 30min ago my food was still not ready. So I waited. When I saw the guy coming out with my order (looked like he was a manager or something) I saw him reach into my bag and get one of my frenchfries and eat it. We stopped by for dinner and we got chips and salsa(to much cumin),and no pickled jalapeño.I order the cancun combination and my husband the caldo de res. My dinner was overpowered by cumin spice and the caldo no flavor just water. The only thing that was good were the beans and rice.
