Vanderbilt Branch YMCA

This is the only location in New York that I know of that offers aqua cycling, which is one of my…read morefavorite workouts. The instructor is nice and the bikes are in good condition. However, the experience could be better. I am not a full member of the YMCA - I pay for just the aqua cycling classes. They expect you to buy a full package (8 classes), but don't offer refunds if you have to miss one. There's limited availability on Tues and Fri nights. Also, the aqua bikes are in a swim lane of a pool that's used for lap swimming, so it's not the most relaxing situation. In addition, the gym facilities are pretty old, especially the locker rooms and common areas. I would consider taking more aqua classes if they offered more days and instructors, but I don't think I would be interested in using their other equipment or becoming a full member.

My wife and I are moving from the area and are sad to be leaving the YMCA! Overall, this is a…read morefantastic option for weight workouts (free weights, machines, bench/cables, squat racks), classes, the pool, and the cardio space. The gym is fairly large and takes some time to get used. There is an elevator for use to go up and down all 5-ish floors of the building. Hours - could have been more convenient if it opened earlier than 6am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. Availability - there are plenty of cardio machines and weight stations available. If specific machines are not available or being used, there are plenty of alternative options. But RARELY has this happened. Pool - is super convenient to have and does get busy earlier (the first few hours after opening) than later. There are multiple lanes. Lockers - nothing super fancy. It looks a bit like a high school locker room, but with a steam and sauna. It's always been clean and I have no complaints here. I think the only recent issue has been that many of the water fountain filters needed to be replaced for a couple of weeks. They have fountains (like in an airport) that show filter status - and it had been on red (needs replacement) for a while.

I am so happy to share this review about NORY in the Upper West Side. We are new to the city and I…read moream so glad I found NORY. My kid has loved spending the winter break here everyday. The instructors in the class are kind and fun, the instructions for parents were super clear, the check in and check out processes are smooth and easy. The other kids coming in seem to be happy as well. I can make reservations for camp days online and They also have early drop off and extended pick ups available The projects they have done every day last week are interesting and engaging for the kids. My 5 year old comes home and demonstrates them every day. It has been fun watching him be so happy and engaged there. Apparently he even made a friend or two. And, most important thing is - everyone I have interacted with at NORY has been so kind - yes, each and everyone! I wish they'd also expand to do afterschool programs in the UWS, because I would want to sign up my kid for that... But meanwhile, we hope to be back in the next break season for camp again! Thank you NORY team.

Nory's STEM-focused curriculum keeps the kiddos engaged while also teaching them teamwork, problem solving, creativity, and many other fine and gross motor skills that are appropriate for their age group. I was very impressed with the woodworking projects my son would bring home nearly every week for 7 weeks; the woodworking projects gave him hands on learning opportunities at such a young age. Also, the staff during my son's time at camp, really cared about my son and other kids in the program. The site director at my son's UWS site - Mariam - is such a phenomenal (calm, supportive) and incredible leader. Mariam and her staff did such a wonderful job supporting my son's social development - esp. his curiosity and high energy - during the summer period. Additionally, Nory's Co-CEO (Peter Seo) was always available to listen and take feedback from parents - and in one instance, he incorporated changes right away! This spoke volumes to how much care he and the Nory team put into ensuring that positive experiences are what a child's time at camp should be centered on! My partner and I are already planning to register our son for future programs (holiday camps during the 2025-2026 school year and hoping for another summer one in 2026); I highly recommend NORY to any family looking for a learning and care focused camp program for their little ones.

"It was so cool that when I finished lunch I could go do whatever I wanted, I didn't have to follow a group like in other camps." Her favorites were the giant slip and slide, the film studio, and the game show at the end of the day. She also liked how she could always go get a snack from the counselor in the cafe whenever she was hungry. "There was fruit and goldfish and homemade yogurt things. It was great!" The setup of this camp allows children to really take ownership of their day, from what they choose to play, to when they eat a snack, to who they spend their time with. It is a very unique idea for a NYC camp, and it was the perfect place for my daughter. She can't wait to go back!

I don't know about the other locations, but I think the person who runs this location (Mike) really goes above & beyond! My daughter loves all the activities and the counselors are all great. I've spoken to a bunch and they all seem to be college seniors or work in education (not the teenagers that some other camps seem to have). We didn't know what to expect since I couldn't find any reviews and didn't know too many people who went last year, but this has truly exceeded all of our expectations!

Play was a key word and when I would spy on them from a distance, giggle and huge smiles! If the world were perfect, all kids would get to engage with their surroundings in this way.
