I pass by Coco Bongo right often and figured it was time to stop and see what this place is all about. The sign on the front advertises "Authentic Central American & Mexican Food". I figured there might be a pretty awesome taco in here...and there was. It's an old Captain D's building, in a not so great part of town, so it's a day time lunch to-go stop for me. The inside is nice and clean, they have counter seating as you first walk in and tables and chairs in the dining room, the dining room has a jukebox and a few big screen tv's. I got some strange looks the first time I walked in as I was the only non hispanic patron there...kinda like in the movies when the needle scratches across the record and the music stops and everybody looks up. Some basic Español is helpful here no doubt.
The first couple of times I stopped I ordered tacos and all were awesome, they do shrimp tacos and they were great. Tacos are street style on corn tortillas topped with onion & cilantro with the red & green sauces on the side, I had a Molida (ground beef) Sope once also which was really good, nice seasonings with great flavor. One visit I ordered a plate from the Hondurian side of the menu, "Pollo con Tajadas" which is a breaded fried chicken leg quarter on a bed of fried plantains and fresh chopped raw cabbage, topped with pico de gallo and dressing of some sort with pickled onions on the side. It's a pretty dish, but it was kinda bland to me. The chicken didn't have much meat to it and plain cabbage and unseasoned plantains just didn't do much for me...the tacos and sopes are outstanding though. I'll definitely stop back by for those and try some of the other items they have to offer. The menu has plenty to choose from, there is a Mexican section and a Hondurian section.
