ZERO STARS After three years of trusting them for simple sanitary trims, my King Charles Cavalier came home clipped, patchy, and uneven -- and instead of owning their mistake, the owners denied it and refused a refund. My dog is five years old, and I've never once brought him anywhere for a full groom. He has always received a "sanitary cut": bath, tidy paws and legs, light feathering, and trimming of sanitary areas only -- never clippers or topcoat cutting. Cavaliers should never be clipped unless the owner requests it, and reputable groomers know this. They'd always followed those directions until this visit. This time, he came home with a dull, uneven coat. When I called, Carlos said "only scissors were used." That wasn't true -- and even if it were, only feathering should have been trimmed. Ron later confirmed clippers had been used. I asked for a refund. Their written reply: "We have groomed him several times and he has always gotten a 'fix scissors trim all over, including the top to make it consistent with his whole look.'" "Somehow, this time, the final results do not look the same to you... the same way that could happen with your hairdresser." "Our groomers deserve to be paid... That is why we do not refund payments for this service." "We can offer you to come... so the other groomers... can take a look and fix anything you would like." Their response was rude and dismissive. I've only ever asked for sanitary cuts -- and that's what I'm charged for, not a full groom. I declined their offer to "fix" it because the damage was already done -- the coat had been cut short and uneven, which cannot be repaired by more trimming. The right thing to do would have been to issue a refund and own up to their mistake. Instead, they made an already upsetting situation worse by refusing to take accountability or listen to a loyal customer of three years, leaving me feeling completely disregarded. THEIR REPLY IS EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED: Carefully worded to deflect responsibility while sounding professional. It subtly reframes the situation to suggest I misunderstood, while portraying them as reasonable and consistent. After three years of going to the same groomer and getting the same service, why would I suddenly complain if nothing had changed? The only thing different this time was what they did to my dog's coat. Our pets are family, and no one knows them better than their owners. Coco and Toto is half the price of everywhere else in the neighborhood for good reason. My dog who always loved boarding PANICKED the last time he came here (stress panting, yawning, crying) - he hates it and that's good enough for me to never go back. This place, like another reviewer said below, fed my dog the wrong food. My two dogs come in together and always had different feeding plans since they started. They fed my larger dog their normal food. They fed my other dog, who has food sensitivities, the other dog's leftover food (which he refused) instead of the food he came with (so he didn't get to eat at all). They completely forgot about his food, evidently just because it was refrigerated. I learned of the mistake (and my dog not eating) only when I did not get my container back and asked where it was. The check in process was always chaotic. They don't appear to keep records or know who is coming in that day - they shuffle through a bunch of paper to find the form you filled out possibly months/years ago when your pet first came in and look at that, basically ignoring what needs to happen during that stay. The dogs also have to go to the bathroom on puppy pads or AstroTurf here, which they never tell you until they ask if you want walks. They charge $15 just to walk the dog outside, which I could never trust they actually do. read more

My family has been coming here for our maltipoo pup for years but I recently had a very negative experience. After picking her up from the grooming appointment, I noticed my dog was feeling uncomfortable and then saw a blood stain on my sheets. The groomer had shaved too close to the skin on her neck, an area where dogs commonly scratch, and within not even an hour she was bleeding. When we brought her back to the store, the owner took zero accountability for this incident, and didn't even APOLOGIZE for this mishap. Instead, they told US to not come back. I've never experienced such little sympathy or poor customer service from any business, let alone from fellow dog owners. On top of receiving a bad haircut, my dog now has to wear a cone. We bring our shy beagle Harry to Coco and Toto about 4 times a week for last 2 years as we both work and he's pretty loud and needs lots of pets. Whether day care, boarding or grooming Coco and Toto has been exceptional and exceeded all expectations. The owner is there daily and charges less than he should so everything is affordable, yet provides excellent care and long hours (8pm weekdays and I've been late and they are never difficult or judgmental / 7pm weekends). Harry has had ear infections, paw allergies, fever and every time they catch it and call us to let us know and still take care of him for the rest of the day. They keep vaccine records current - actually. At the end of the day they love Harry and take perfect care of him. They are who you want taking care of your dog. The other day cares in the area are negligent consistently. Throw me a...dragged Harry by his collar to a time out when he wasn't aggressive / just hyper - was caught on video even, bath and b let a dog get out and into traffic... If you are in Hell's Kitchen or adjacent, take your dog here. And if you are leaving nyc, board your pup here regardless of where you live, I promise you, the love, knowledge, experience, care is unparalleled in NYC and totally worth it!!! read more

Although the groomers work tirelessly, their hard work is not enough to make up for Ron's unprofessional and rude manner. It is mind-boggling that he believes the best way to have a conversation with a long-standing customer is to be incredibly rude and unprofessional. Thank goodness other dog day care options have open in the neighborhood over the last few years. I took my pup here a few times and then she started to show signs of stress whenever we would get close so we stopped brining her. I witnessed the staff spraying dogs and kicking the dogs in their "care" (see video), which is why I felt compelled to finally write this review. Everyone is courteous and professional and they try their best to accommodate me. The grooming is always consistent and looks amazing. They take their time vs being in a rush to get to the next dog and it shows. People literally have stopped me in the street to ask where my dog is groomed. My only complaint is having to wait too long for an appointment! In the early part of the pandemic when I was working remotely, I took my dog to a groomer where I was staying who gave her the worst grooming I've ever seen. It was terrible - she looked scalped. This is a mixed review -- the nice people who run this shop do some things great and some things could be improved. Staff: Friendly and conscientious. They will call and check in if they have a question about your pet or if something of note happens while the pet is being boarded. They answer questions when asked. They ask about the dog and the human. Five stars. Dog boarding: Compared to others in the neighborhood this place is reasonably priced and ethical. The street window allows you to observe the dogs (unlike other places that frost the windows and charge you to see your own pet via a webcam). My dog loves it here and always wants to go back. They also screen dogs before accepting them for boarding which is good because it means that dogs that are reactive or aggressive are not accepted -- but I don't think they screen strictly enough. Dogs of all sizes are boarded together. My pup is small and there is this pair of beagles prone to displaying bullying behavior. I now ask if the beagles are there and won't leave my pup if they are. Three stars. Grooming: This is the area that needs the most work. I groomed my pup here once but never again. They said they did hand stripping -- but what they actually use was an undercoat brush and clippers. The groomer was late for the appointment, which meant she wasn't there when I dropped off my dog. And she never called me -- imagine getting a haircut and having a barber who doesn't ask you any questions. In the end the trim was minimal and I had to repeat the process somewhere else as my poor dog has a thick coat and was suffering in the heat. They also didn't seem very familiar with my dog's breed, at one point casually mentioning to me that a bath was included when my dog's coat shouldn't be bathed! One star. Average: 3 stars read more

I adopted a small dog from animal control and he was incredibly cautious, he was around 10/ 11 months old when I adopted him and 12 months when he started at coco and toto. For the first two months after the adoption, brady had been so scared to play with other dogs or approach other humans. After about a month at coco and toto, I noticed a change; Brady was more confident in so many ways. I started to see that he was approaching other dogs and even humans at the dog park. The staff at Coco and Toto are incredible, Brady has friends there and every time I have looked in the window after dropping him off; I see him running up to the staff in the daycare room with the "so happy to see you" butt wiggle that he does. 5/5 They value the dogs and their relationships with the owners. This would be my 2nd experience with Coco & Toto and I am very pleased. I love how they have an entire grooming package that includes everything a dog would need to be cleaned and groomed properly. I have a Mini Goldendoodle, and since I love her shag so much, she tends to get very matted and they always remove all of it, which is pretty impressive. I have only been here twice but unfortunately twice wound up being headaches. I am done The first time involved leaving my dog at 2 PM for basic grooming. I was told by 5 PM that they were finally getting to him. Needless to say I missed a Broadway show that evening because it took that long to get to him. There were no apologies. The attitude was: "yes, it can take a few hours for us to get to your dog" Having heard the story, my dog walker offered to be the one that could take the dog there and then pick him up. Little did I know that they would not "release the dog" if I had not paid yet. So I was busy at work and my dog-walker was there to pick the dog up and but they would not "release" the dog because I had not paid yet. But you see they did not make it easy. You see, they would not accept payment over the phone. Needless to say I had to drop everything, leave work downtown, and literally go pick up my pooch personally way out of the way on W 11th in Hell's Kitchen and pay in person. A complete lack of flexibility and a huge inconvenience. Once again, this place had managed to affect my entire evening and yet insisted that this was MY problem. The woman said: We don't release a dog without payment. Really? So i am at work downtown and my dog-walker is there and you won't take my credit card over the phone so now you have basically screwed my day and made my life impossible. And the lady dug her heels and was like: I am not going to lose my job releasing a dog without payment. She made it sound like a dog is being permanently released from the Soviet Union. Ridiculous. Call me crazy but my cleaner's picks up and drops off my clothes and they have my credit card in their system so this really does not need to be this complicated. My dog-walker could not believe it especially because they had referred people here So, this is a business with a complete lack of trust for its customers. God forbid you should let your dog-walker pick up your dog even though they have your address, phone number etc. They build ZERO sense of family or trust. One way or another, this place makes basic dog grooming very difficult, either by taking hours to groom your dog and making you change your entire day or by telling your dog-walker that the dog cannot be released. And all along they will just insist that they are RIGHT. I will add that whenever they are either way late grooming your dog or refuse to release them to your dog-walker you have to physically go pick-them up at their completely out-of-the-way location. Yes, they are on 11th Avenue on the fringes of Manhattan. No subway nearby at all. As I say, I have only been there two times and both times have involved my having to take taxis over to 11th Avenue (completely out of the way) and to pick up my dog because they took 3 hours or because they refused to let the dog leave with my walker. Cute names like Coco and Toto don't matter when the actual service is lousy and inflexible . AWFUL. never again read more

My dog, Betsy, has been visiting C&T one day a week for the past three years. Betsy is a rescue, so she's hyper-sensitive. When she first arrived at her forever home she was jumpy and had some major social issues with people and other dogs. She was unable to stay in another doggie daycare environment, where she was frightened and aggressive. The folks at C&T were warm, welcoming, friendly and especially patient. Do NOT bring your dog here for daycare. While the front desk staff is sweet and attentive, the actual workers with the dogs are untrained, impatient and inexperienced. My dog has been to 4 different daycares and this is the only one where he's come out with a bladder that takes 3 full minutes to let out, every single time. There is only one young worker inside the dog room at a time and I figured out why they put stuff over the windows. In the small little holes if you stay long enough without being see you will see them squirt the dogs in the face with a spray water bottle anytime they start to play with each other - and I mean even a cute little nudge. I even saw the "caretaker" fling his body at a dog in a "come at you" way trying to make the dog flinch with fear when the dog tried laying 3 times in a row, despite being sprayed. It's just awful - if you care for your fur baby don't bring them here. My dog now has tons of anxiety about loud noises and sudden movements that he did not have before. I know pickings are slim for a good daycare in NYC but you're better off somewhere else! read more

Or: check their other reviews & notice how much longer & more detailed their reviews for other places are. -- notice how similar so many of them are. Same vague praise, same structure, ending with "RECOMMEND!", vague claims about the dog liking the place, claims of having moved away, claims of comparisons to other similar business nearby. -- one of the more "convincing" ones was WRITTEN BY AN EMPLOYEE. Stinks to high heaven. I'm baffled by all these claims of the in-store staff being so friendly and professional. They have always given me the impression my existence is annoying to them. One particular front desk woman seems to go out of her way to do everything and anything in the world rather than help customers. For example, on more than one occasion, I and others have just stood there waiting around watching her leisurely straighten out shelf merchandise, talk on the phone*, putter around on the computer etc. rather than help the people who are physically there waiting. They seem to have a very "uggggghhh everything is such a boooother" surly teen kind of attitude. Horrible customer service. My friend used Coco & Toto for dog sitting for three nights when she was away and the dog sitter left her dog for over 24 hours alone, possibly up to 48 hours so that the dog was left to defecate and urinate on the floor of her apartment. The way she found out that the dog was alone (the dog sitter was lying to her) was because police were called because the dog was barking non-stop. I am the emergency contact she has listed with her landlord so I got the call to go over to the apartment to deal with the dog and the police (there is a police report, videotapes from the building, etc). Coco & Toto were COMPLETELY useless in dealing with the situation, they didn't want to see the video, they would not release the name of the dog sitter and would not say if the dog sitter was getting fired. Apparently only after the dog sitter did something to other client was she fired. My friend asked for some compensation---after all, she had to toss a rug in her apartment and her dog now has major abandonment anxiety. Coco & Toto only told her they would take the dog sitting off her bill, no compensated dog walks, etc. WOW! So she just didn't have to pay for the dog sitting that didn't happen? My apartment records suggest that our walker cut corners and didn't do the full hour walks - some of the in/out time difference was 40-43 minutes or so, which means our dog was getting closer to 30 minute walks, after taking into account elevator travel time and setup time. Given both my wife and I working long hours and our dog being high energy, it was very disappointing and upsetting to trust a service that took advantage of us. Management failed to rectify the problem when it was brought to their attention. He asked for proof of the apartment records, because he'll "need to evaluate and fire the dog walker upon confirmation," because he "craves truth" or something along that effect. I wasn't willing to have my actions lead to someone's employment action (second chances?). Their doggy daycare area is one big room where big and and small dogs are all together. Dog owners beware. When they finally looked up in annoyance to hand me the paperwork for a daycare visit, it was so apparent that they couldn't care less about my dog and his time there. I'm a new owner and I really wanted this to work out because we live in the neighborhood. When he went into the dog pen, dogs were snapping at him and the staff just stood there and did nothing as he ran into the corner for help. This is the kind of care they give here. Do not go here! 1. Most doggy day cares in the city provide open windows for people to look into and observe. At Coco and Toto, the windows are covered and painted. This is sketchy and not healthy for the dogs. 2. The owners cram WAY too many dogs into the small room at once. Today I counted 30 dogs in one room. 3. I watched dogs bite and hump other dogs as the one human in the room watched without taking any action. 4. There was urine in the room and no one went to clean it up.
