Myrtle Grove is a great place to go fishing, duck hunting, and just see the bounty of the wetlands…read moreof Louisiana. There are crabs, ducks, gators, fish, and all sorts of other wildlife in abundance. The Marina offers supplies and live bait for your adventures. Even if you don't have a boat for a small fee you can just fish right off the docks of the Marina (and there are some huge redfish jumping all over the place around the docks). It is the only place in the area so some of the things are priced at a premium so plan accordingly. The Marina offers an excellent fish cleaning station that is so convenient that it makes it worth your while to pay the launch or dock usage fees so you don't have to do the messy job at home. Definitely one of the best places for redfish, crabs, and trout within range of a very quick drive from New Orleans. Myrtle Grove Marina video review: https://youtu.be/s8UaWHms7zg

I never forget my "chalmatian" buddy was fishing like mad and this old black guy driving an antique…read morerusted pickup truck, sitting on a 5 gallon bucket with a cane pole kept bugging him. The guy was like "wu, wu, wu, what did you use for bait"?? His stuttering got to be so bad he could hardly get the words out. He was like that attorney in "my cousin vinny". He kept asking a bunch of questions- "do, do, do, do you fish the top or the bottom?" "Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, yo like live bait or u, u,u, u, use beetles?" When the guy asked him "we, we, we, well how many fish did you catch?" my boy replied "5, 5, and 5. (Pointing to each of the three persons in his group as he said 5) Why!? What the fu@& do you CARE?!" and he hurled some insults about his speech and intellect... The guy didn't stutter one bit. He pulled out a badge and said "I want to know because I'm with wildlife and fisheries. You're not 5, 5, and 5- because I've been here watching you the whole time. You're 5 & 10 over the limit at $500 a fish. He is zero, and he is zero (pointing at the other two guys), so could you please sign this citation and I'll see you Monday morning at the courthouse on canal st. with your $5000 fine!!" We all liked to die when the guy lost his "disabled act". Everyone let their guard down partially because we were in a place where you pay, think there's some type of protection, but nope!

What a great day fishing! I contacted Captain Dave of Pelican State Fishing Charters to take me,…read moremy two young (7 & 9) kids, cousin, and cousin's 13-year-old fishing. So glad I did. Captain Dave was amazing with the kids - patient and fun. He was incredibly knowledgeable and an excellent teacher for the kids and had great tips and tricks for the more seasoned adults. I've fished reds and specs many times before, and still came away learning new things. Captain Dave took time to engage all the kids based on their age and skills. He keeps an orderly boat and made sandwiches and had cold drinks. We did well on the fish. Everyone on the boat got their Bull Red! We had a nice eclectic mix of sheepshead, specs, slot reds, and bass. He had us on fish all day. We pulled in an ice chest full and caught just as many not in the slot. When we arrived in the morning, we pulled into an area cordoned off with an electronic gate. We drove past a beautiful mansion-type lodge and parked right next to the pier. Totally secure, no worries about losing anything from the bed of the truck at a public marina. We had a quick safety brief, kids used the restroom, and off to the fishing spot. We were there five minutes and boom - my 7-year-old landed the first fish of the day. From there it was on. Captain Dave strategically moved and communicated with other captains from the area. There is solid teamwork. He kept us in fish and we moved to new spots when other boats started crowding us. He never brought us to a dry spot. When the live bait was depleted, well past our allotted time - we went back to the dock. We took pictures and then wandered the comfortable grounds of the private lodge while Captain Dave cleaned and portioned the fish. Free ice was available to pack our catch for the ride home. All in all, an amazing day. My kids already want to book another trip! We will be fishing with Captain Dave again, for sure. I highly Pelican State Fishing Charters. A great experience and memories I will treasure.

Why I chose Pelican State Fishing Charters…read more "I fished the area for over 40 years and had a boat, camp and connections." "Over the years of growing up down in Happy Jack in Plaqumines Parish, my family had a fishing camp on lot 73 and were down there since I was five years old." "Every weekend and every summer my dad and his five brothers were down there. My cousins and I played and learned the basin." All those memories from "Captain Dave" brought back so many of my own memories. And while I grew up on the streams and rivers in Colorado, the one thing that determines how successful you will be is knowing the waters. If you don't know the waters, everything else is worthless... OK, almost worthless. My first memories were camping on the ground with a canvas tarp over the sleeping bags. The morning coffee warmed my hands holding the tin cup and my "innards" as the acrid taste trickled down. (Who knew I could ever like the stuff, let alone end up drinking three pots a day, later in life.) And the opaque white fishing rod with a metallic green fly fishing reel (I didn't know it was fly fishing reel for probably the first five years, or so), split shot, a tin of worms and a jar of salmon eggs. Most important of all... Dad and his knowledge of the rivers. I learned all the fishing holes in 11 Mile Canyon from him. Same with Metberry Gulch, the Arkansas River and the Roaring Forks. Much later, I tried my own hand at new places. And I did OK as I read the waters... but it wasn't the same as knowing them... not by a long shot! Captain Dave is like Dad. He knows the waters. He has lived on them. Fished on them. Shared them with others. The "waters run through" him. And yes, it is a lot like fishing with Dad. I learned a lot of things from Dad and when it comes to serious fishing, Rule #1, go fishing with someone who knows the waters. I am glad I did.
