I was at Northgate Market in Santa Ana today, to pick up some ceviche. For those of you outside of…read moreCalifornia, Northgate Market specializes in providing Latin American centric groceries and authentic Hispanic pre-prepared deli-style food service. I love their ceviche. Not only is it the best price in southern California per pound, but it is the most delicious and freshest I have ever tasted. I went to the "Pescados" counter and ordered a pound of Ceviche de Camaron and a half pound of the their Senegal Style Ceviche de Camaron as well. The lady working at the counter looked at me and shook her head. She said, "Estas segura?". ( are you sure?) " Es muy, muy picante". I said, "yes", "Si". "Me gusta mucho spicy" I said in my "Spanglish". She shook her head in disbelief, looked at me right in the eyes and started walking backwards holding up one finger. "Un Momento" she said. She then called in the back for someone, not breaking eye contact with me. Another lady came out and asked the first lady something , ( I did not hear). The lady she called out for, walked up to the counter, her brow furled. "Ma'am", do you understand that she is telling you that this ceviche is very, very spicy?". I nodded my head and said, "Yes, I love hot food". "Es mi favorito". My Spanish sucks and I am embarrassed at my accent when I try to speak it. But I think I got the point across. They both shook their heads and with their eyes opened even wider in disbelief. The first lady handed me my tubs of food and I was on my way. It occurred to me when I got home and I was both crying, sweating and my nose was running while eating this ambrosia of spices; I wouldn't have believed me either. My dishwater blond hair, blue eyes, and middle aged, pasty skin does not come across to anyone as someone who enjoys that kind of pain in their food. I laughed as I took that last bite of my lunch, "The lady was truly worried that she shouldn't sell this to me without getting a second opinion." She was trying to do me a favor. It was sweet really. So anyway, NorthGate Market is just the best . They really care about their customers.

Ok pay attention: everything is not what it seems they have specials posted upfront just to get ur attention to go in and purchase be careful because they will over charge u with the regular price when u bring up the sign they say its old promotion everything in this store is old all the baskets u see inside with a buy 1 get 2nd free its bogus everything in the basket is way over priced in reality u paying full price for each another thing the store is filthy its groce the fruit they put out is not fresh to prove what im saying is true look at the hot dogs they trying to sell they been their weeks I seen the same wieners in the same position just rotating to make it look good go in there and see for yourself they are so tiny cause they shrunk from all the time they been there plus the machines are dirty the soda machines are dirty the icee machine has the same issue u can tell they been still for weeks maybe longer. And here is the biggest kicker the biggest fraud of all they have a paper posted right where u pay that says they got an award for the best convenience store in orange county OMG! This spot does a lot of volume so the prices feel very reasonable (and they don't try to gouge). I say specialty beverages store because the vibe feels a lot classier than your usual liquor store and more like one of those chains, but with a much smaller footprint and more curated selection. The folks here have always been helpful and great. This place used to be on my regular rotation of places to visit and buy whiskey and beer from when I lived in the area. I don't get out here much any more, but always a fun place to visit. I recently visited in late May 2025 and I'm not sure if it's still the same ownership, but when I frequently visited years ago I used to geek out with the guys here about beer and whiskey. My recent visit was for a single barrel select of EH Taylor. Such a treat and the pricing was more than fair! Really wish there were more places like this closer to where I live now, but this spot is a fantastic place.
