Owner was very kind, BUT his work was less than stellar. He hand stitched and it was crooked, big bulging non-matching thread, and not professional looking at all. He should have been upfront with me before doing the work (and he still charged me!). I ended up taking them to Mardy's Shoe Repair in Newton (166 Needham St). Was referred by harness shop in Wellesley and was told to ask for Oleg. Dropped off my item and Oleg wasn't there. I and had to really hold back from getting into an argument with such a rude and aggressive workman who took the order. He had no desire to even want to talk for me to explain some of what I was looking to have completed. Not sure his name, but wasn't Oleg. Came back to pick up. Met Oleg who was very nice. I bring boots, shoes and purses here for both complex and simple repairs. He works quickly and does an excellent job.

I had used them a couple times before but the first time they replaced the soles of my reproduction Victorian boots, the glued the lining down with a large fold in it, but I could still wear them so I just let it go. I got a couple other soles replaced on reproduction shoes so I figured it would be alright if I took in my favorite pair of heels that were a bit wobbly from use and asked if there was a way to just secure them. When I got them back, they had not just secured the heel, but had replaced the support part with a piece of metal that was clearly too short for the heel and left a giant ledge in the shoe, making them completely unwearable. One of them also had a piece of string poking out of the bottom that looked like it was trying to hold the metal down, but was not working. They tried to shine it up to make it look pretty but it did not chance the fact that I could not wear them! When I went back to get my money back, the man at the counter told me to come back the next day when the owner was in, and when I saw him, he reluctantly returned my money and said if I get my money back, he wants his hardware back. So he ripped up the lining, took out the metal, and gave them back with the cushioning destroyed and the lining not attached at the top. I had to take them to another cobbler in order to repair the damage and it ended up costing me more because of the damage that had already been done to them by these people. I went here because of all the good reviews. My experience though was very different. I brought in a pair of Red Wing moc toe boots to have the cristy soles changed to leather soles. They looked great until I saw the crooked and inconsistent Goodyear welt stitching. I was told this was the best they could do with old machinery. If you don't have the capability to do a job with the tools you have you should turn down the job. I would've understood and gone elsewhere. Instead I wasted my time and money. I've worked in the athletic shoe business for almost 30 years and these shoes went from first quality to seconds. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I've never been treated so poorly at any business ever. Back story: My dog chewed on my boot and rather than buying a new pair, I thought that I would try to get it repaired. I did some research and came upon this cobbler shop. I also read a news story about the shop's struggle through COVID and thought, why not help out a local business. I brought my boot in and asked if it was possible to repair. I said several times that if it was beyond repair, no big deal. I was told yes he could fix it. Wouldn't be perfect but it would look good. I left my boot and my phone number. Three weeks go by and I hadn't heard anything so I called the shop. It was ready, $25 cash or check. Went in the following afternoon and my boot looked awful. The stitches were crooked, a different color than the rest of the stitching in the boot, and very widely spaced. The upper leather trim was just slapped on with glue without any attempt to blend the two pieces together nor any closing/cleanup at the laces. There were also spots of dried glue all over my boot and dirt along the trim where the restitching was done. I began to share my concerns about the stitching color not matching in size and color. That is when the guy started yelling at me and throwing spools of thread towards me, telling me that it's not his fault my dog chewed my boot and to wear pants to cover up the boot. After arguing what seemed like an eternity, he grabbed my boot and began ripping the stitches he made, further ruining my boot, creating tears in the leather and finally threw the boot back at me. I am so disappointed and disgusted at the way I was treated. It would have been better if he'd just said he couldn't repair my boot from the beginning. read more

The owner was abrupt at first and then went on to full rude when I tried to get an explanation for the repair of my zipper. The guy was more interested in having argument then professionally explaining how he was going to fix my zipper. Look elsewhere. read more

I brought my 10+ year old boots to get the heel replaced as they have been over loved and under cared for by me. He leveled the heels and replaced the soles. They look brand new and now I have better soles than before! The turnaround was VERY fast and they look as good as new after a tune-up and polish! read more

Oleg can fix any shoe or leather item! I always bring in my work heels that get beat up as I run around. He will change the the heel tip, redo the sole, and make sure they are polished. He also cleaned one of of my white suede sneakers that I stepped in mud in. I dropped them off covered in mud and he was able to make them look brand new. He will try to fix anything your bring him and always gives you an honest answer if it is worth repairing or replacing. He has saved me from rebuying many of the same shoes and makes them look brand new. He has a real skill and is passionate about his work. read more

I always need to look up the business hours to make sure someone will be there and came across some negative reviews. I have had shoes repaired, I have been told something was too far gone to spend the money one, I had a rip in a Patagonia coat and post repair- couldn't find the repair. I have been going here for years and my observation of the 1 star reviews seem like folks want to pick on Oleg's personality or require a bit more personal service than the rest of us. I live in Framingham but choose to travel the 20 minutes to takes me to get to Oleg's shop because he is worth that drives (and more).. There are plenty of other Cobbler's closer to me...but none that greet me so warmly each time I come to his shop and do what I consider such a great job at restoring or cleaning of my family's shoes the way he does. STAY AWAY!!! The owner, Oleg, is VERY RUDE and gruff. I inquired about restructuring the heel on a pair of sneakers in the same way as the pair I was wearing. He immediately said a flat out "No". He told me to take a knife and cut the back myself. What???!!! WOW!!! Obviously, politeness is not one of Oleg's strengths. The shop is tiny and filthy. The entrance is very narrow and can only accommodate one person entering. As soon as you walk in(and while you wait) you breathe in the strong TOXIC CHEMICALS. If another customer walks in, it's an extremely tight squeeze to find a place to stand while you wait. I brought my Ugg's here to be repairs as they tore at the seam. The gentleman stated he would unsee the remaining portion and sew it back together. He did not do this. He stuck a leather piece of material inside the boot for make the repair which was clearly visible on the outside. He also used bright yellow thread when the boot was tan. When confronted about this the owner took my boots and paid me what I paid for them but I was furious. Haven't been able to find those boots since anywhere as they discontinued them. I recently brought my military style boots to the shop and had the soles and insoles changed. The shop was highly recommended to me by a friend and it defiantly lived up to my expectations. When I picked up my boots I was immediately very impressed in their appearance as the soles and insoles were changed. I read a lot of positive reviews about the shop and Oleg specifically. So when the time came to resole a pair of nice dress shoes, I chose this shop over sending them to a national repair center associated with the manufacturer for resoling/reconditioning. Tips I learned from this experience, what you should expect: 1) Customer service is second to getting the job done. Not that Oleg was rude, by any means. But it's about the job. We had a nice conversation, as long as he was telling me about his life and work, and how things should be done, which brings me to... 2) Be prepared to be told "the best way" to do things. I respect his expertise and experience, but I had to insist to have my leather soles replaced with leather, as opposed to the rubber soles he thought I should have used. I got the feeling he often gets his way by pushing his way. Not overly hard, but still. I had to convince him that I only ever wore my dress shoes inside, out of the weather, so I didn't need the rubber soles. Which, again, brings me to.... 3) I try to do a little research when it comes to repairs on higher quality items, if for no other reason than to understand the craftsman (and Oleg is a true craftsman) when they explain their approach. But two things slipped by me: First, a high quality resole will job includes a channel in the sole into which the stitching to the welt is done. I knew enough to ask for a Goodyear welt, to match the original shoes, but my shoes were resoled with the stitching on the surface of the sole, and not in a channel around the outside. This means that the stitches will wear away more quickly than if they were embedded in the channel. From what I've read since then, this is an easier way to do it, but it seemed more to me like cutting corners, particularly since the original soles were constructed with the channel. Secondly, the sole was only replaced to the arch, not the whole sole. I've never had my shoes done this way by any manufacturer. This was clearly easier to do, and it undoubtedly meant a less expensive repair, but it would have been nice to have heard that explained when I first dropped them off. 4) Finally, bring cash. They don't take credit cards here. Am I happy with the resole job? Yes... it's a good job, with some minor "I wish he would have done it this way." A full sole repair, with the stitches in a channel, would have cost more an taken more time, but would have lasted longer than the way it was done here. You can arguably chalk that up to a communication failure (see #2 above). Do your homework if you have a need to have something done the truly "right way" before going here. I would use him again, and I shouldn't have to ask for things to be done a specific way, but next time I'll be better prepared. And I have no doubt that Oleg could have done the job I wish he had done, if I'd only asked. read more

They did an amazing job with an expensive Prada handbag. My handbag had held up very poorly over time. The leather was saggy and the bag had completely lost it's structure. Neither Prada nor Saks said they could repair the bag. I so appreciated that Cobbler Shop was willing to try to fix it and the result was better than I could have hoped for. The bag looks new again and is now reinforced to hold it's shape forever! Oleg was very fun to deal with and fixed my bag very quickly. My wife had an expensive pair of Fendi boots that needed repair. I saw the other reviews here on Yelp and decided to give him a try. I called ahead because it was late in the day and I wanted to be sure they were open. Oleg answered and said if I was coming, he'd wait. It took me forever to get there due to traffic but he was indeed waiting after hours for me to drop off the boots. He asked when we wanted them, had them done very quickly and they are perfect. Just picked up a pair of riding boots that I had Oleg reconfigure. These were custom boots I bought 20 years ago but never used. Today's styles have zippers up the back so I brought them in for Oleg to add a zipper. I have large calves and it made it very difficult. Oleg worked with me over the course of 3 fittings to get them just right. I must admit that I was hopeless as to how they would turn out after the 3rd fitting and dreaded the idea of having to spend $1200 on a new pair. But Oleg is a MIRACLE WORKER and he transformed them into exactly what I needed!!!! I can't say enough good things about this shop and Oleg. The time and attention he took with me was wonderful.
