A great place to…read morestart Barn Island in Stonington is one of the best places to launch a boat in Eastern Ct. It has a huge parking lot but since it is so popular it frequently fills up so people park on the side on the road. No one seems to mind but it does make for a long walk back to your vehicle. The ramp is steep but the water usually deep so it's easy for even a relatively large boat to get under way. Once you are in the water you have several great options. If you are in a kayak you can go north up the Wequetequock river, or south out to Stonington, Long Island Sound, Sandy Pt. or Napatree Point. This whole area was absolutely hammered by the 1938 hurricane and a beach in the area used to be called Kitchen Beach because appliances ripped from cottages were found buried in the sand for decades after the hurricane. Fortunately no hurricanes have hit in a while and the area around Barn Island is called Little Narragansett Bay and is usually quite calm. If you want more excitement in your yaking you can paddle out to Napatree Pt and old Fort Mansfield where rocks, old fishing piers and heavy wind and waves can conspire to give you a near death experience if you desire. Pretty good surfing out by Napatree also. For something less exciting you can go over to Watch Hill and get ice cream and some good seafood or just land on a isolated beach on Sandy Point Island. This was actually a part of Napatree but the hurricane literally tore the spit of land away and is now a rolling island. If you go east you can explore the very cool town of Stonington. Barn Island is a great place to launch no matter what your intentions are or abilities are. Just make sure you get there early during the summer weekends or you just might be in for a long walk to get back to your vehicle.

A Westerly Gem -- We Had the Time of Our Lives! My friend…read moreand I rented a tandem kayak for the day from Watch Hill Outfitters, and we genuinely had the time of our lives! Harrison and Mike were wonderful from beginning to end. Harrison was patient and took his time making sure we had everything we needed, understood the kayak and launch, and had a general idea of the kind of experience we wanted. The launch itself was incredibly easy--much easier than several other kayak launches I've used--and before long, we were off with six glorious hours ahead of us. The tandem kayak was perfect for two friends looking for a little adventure, a little workout, and a LOT of conversation and catching up! It felt stable and comfortable and would be a great choice for beginner-to-intermediate paddlers. And what a beautiful route! We paddled through downtown Westerly and beyond, then eventually turned around and made our way past the Westerly Yacht Club, taking some time to meander through the estuary. Listening to the birds, exploring the little waterways, and enjoying the quiet and serenity was absolutely lovely. Six hours gave us enough time that we never felt rushed--we could simply explore and enjoy the day. When we returned, Mike greeted us with a huge smile and cheerful conversation while we returned the kayak to Harrison. And, of course, we had to spend some time with Ruby, the beautiful and lovable black Lab who appears to be the true overseer of operations at Watch Hill Outfitters. This is a friendly, local place with real personality--not just kayak rentals. They also have an enormous assortment of fishing equipment and accessories. Harrison and Mike made the whole experience easy, welcoming, and fun. Watch Hill Outfitters is a definite Westerly gem and absolutely worth the trip. We will be back!

At first it sounded too good to be true but I took his word and went. The trip can only be described as a dream. Walle had local connects in El Paredon from a private chef to local surfers. We were able to score clean glassy waves every single day. The food was included and consisted of fine dining at restaurants that used locally sourced ingredients as well as homemade meals from a private chef-thank you Andy Manzi. The best part of the trip was the vast improvement of my surfing skills thanks to both Andy and Walle's professionalism and coaching style. Walle was able to capture aerial drone footage of me surfing and we'd review the footage in the hotel room on the big screen. Walle and Andy then provided micro-adjustments suggestions to my surfing and they have since carried my skillset miles! I visited Remy's this summer when my son's bike needed a repair while we were on vacation. It turned out to be much more complicated than I realized, but they still took the time to repair the bike while I waited so my son could get back on it that afternoon. We don't live in the area and hadn't purchased the bike from Remy's, so they certainly didn't have to go out of their way for us. The fact that they did meant so much. A broken bike might seem like a small thing, but when you're a kid on summer vacation, it can ruin your whole week! Even more importantly, while working on the bike they discovered a significant safety issue related to some DIY work we had attempted at home. Their thoroughness and attention to detail may very well have prevented a serious accident or injury. I'm incredibly grateful that they didn't just fix the immediate problem--they took the time to make sure the bike was truly safe. Everyone we dealt with was kind, knowledgeable, thorough, and incredibly helpful. One other takeaway from this experience: buy your bike from a great local bike shop! We live in New Hampshire and had purchased my son's bike online. If I had it to do over again, I would absolutely buy local. Having knowledgeable people you can turn to for ongoing service, maintenance, and advice is worth so much--and Remy's has a great selection. I can't recommend Remy's highly enough. It gets periodic and professional tune ups, and they're always a pleasure to deal with. Always a pleasant exchange. This is the exceptional part. I have a friend who is homeless, and I found a "beater bike" to give to him. I brought it to Remy's, and we all decided it was too far gone to resurrect. The guys looked at each other, smiled, and one of them went in the back and wheeled out a pretty decent bike that was made serviceable rather easily. They gave this to me for my homeless friend! He loved it, jumped right on it with a huge smile on his face, and I know we helped Improve the quality of life for someone down on their luck. This is the kind of people that you deal with at Remy's! That means a lot to me. I'm glad to be their customer.
