The Kayak Centre - Wickford, RI

The staff at The Kayak Centre are among the best in the industry. Very knowledgeable and courteous providing timely information for the beginner through advanced customers regarding kayaks and paddle boards. From accessories to clothing there is something for everyone. Stop in and check them out.

I had the best experience buying two paddle boards this Christmas. I went to the store multiple times to look at different boards and to ask questions, and to get comfortable with my purchase. The staff never pressured me to buy anything and were nothing but polite. Matt was the person who helped me with my final purchase. I ended up with two matching boards and was very pleased with the knowing that I was getting the right boards for my wife and I. Matt even offered to deliver the boards to my house. I will be back for other gear and and would highly recommend the team at the Kayak Centre to anyone looking to buy a board, kayak or outdoor gear.

A great kayak store located right in the center of Wickford. A good selection and yaks and accessories but more importantly a great staff that will always take the time to answer stupid questions and offer realistic advice. The Kayak Center also offers different trips and instruction for the beginner to the advanced. A great place for someone looking for their first yak because of the low pressure sales approach of the staff.

Two friends and I rented kayaks at their Wickford location this Thursday...all three of us were first timers & nervous, but wanted to try something new on our vacation! The staff was great! The guy at the front desk was cracking jokes with us while we were signing our waivers. The two instructors outside were very informative and patient with us. :) The scenery was beyond beautiful! We didn't want our two hours to end lol. I left Rhode Island yesterday and this was in my top two favorite things I did while vacationing here. (it's tied with taking a evening boat cruise)

We are looking for, among other things, a smaller tent (ours is huge) that we can easily lug around with us and REI has a large selection. We signed up for their membership several years ago. Just tell them your phone number when making a purchase and you get credit for the purchase. We picked up a UV protective t-shirt as a gift for someone. It was reasonably priced imho, very soft and moisture wicking. Brilliant. I should probably get myself one too. BTW, the company no longer offers bags. None. So bring a reusable bag if you plan to shop here. It's just another way to reduce waste and be a good steward. Some of the prices can be high, but not everything. They sell Patagonia which is an expensive brand, as well as other, more moderately priced items. You just have to know what you want and what you are willing to pay. If you check out the bulletin board upstairs, they offer guided excursions that look really fun. I check out their selection of hiking poles as I am looking to buy some. Everything from really reasonable basic models to foldable, light weight pricey models. So you have options. They have pet items. Personal care items. Clothes and shoes are upstairs. So many types of water bottles. Camping items for both the thru-hiker and the car-camper. Check them out. They are a good resource and the staff are friendly and happy to assist.

However they sold us a boat trailer without a title. we used that trailer three times. Once to drive across the state, once to put the boat in the water. when we took the boat out of the water the axle snapped. Also the lights never worked. I did leave a message to see if there was any warranty as we bought the trailer barely 3 months ago. No response. No call back. Now we are getting the trailer repaired and wondering how to get it registered without a title.

The person who answered was very helpful, asked my name and said they'd set the impeller aside. We walked the 1.2 miles from town (it's what cruisers do) and got to the shop. We had our dog with us and asked if it would be OK to bring him in (it was about 85 degrees out and he was wiped). Not only could we bring him in, but they even provided him a bowl of water. The impellers were on the side, just like they said they'd be. We wandered around the store and it was a really cool place - lots of things you don't always see, and the consignment part of the store had some really neat things. After we paid for our stuff, we decided we wanted to cab it back. We called the cab company and they said they wouldn't allow dogs in their cabs. The owner's son said there was a pretty big storm coming, and he actually drove us back to the dinghy docks in his own car! I'm all about buying local and supporting local businesses. When you have customer service and friendliness like this, it's pretty much worth any price (and for the record, their prices were very reasonable). I would definitely recommend a visit, if just to check out the consignment area.

The check-in process was very efficient. We filled out some forms in one area, paid in another, and then got our kayak in another. We went from parking to being in our kayak in about 5 minutes. Note that we got there about an hour after it opened so it wasn't that busy yet. We drove by later in the day and it was packed, so I'd say the earlier you can get there the better. It was also hot so water, sunglasses and hats are helpful. Kayaks are in good condition and it's about a 20 minute paddle south to the north end of the Narragansett town beach. There are also motor boats around but most were very nice and gave us plenty of room. There's lots of wildlife around especially birds so would be good for pretty much anyone. Would highly recommend and would definitely go again.
