What a great day with Capt. Merv! When we showed up at the dock he was waiting and all ready to go…read more We placed our drinks and snacks in his ice chest and off we went. It was like having a local family member taking you out for the day. Whatever we wanted to do he knew just where to go. We visited the sandbar, so we could say we did it. When it got busy we were ready to see wildlife and go snorkeling and Merv did not disappoint. We pointed out landmarks and other interesting facts as we trolled along. We plan to use his service again when we visit Key Largo again. If you are looking for a great day don't look any farther.

He was so quick to answer all my questions and is so knowledgeable on the entire area. He was amazing from start to finish-- showed us so many areas and shared the history of pretty much everything we saw. We saw sharks, a sting ray, grouper fish, a ton of fish, barracuda's, and more! He was so amazing that he even brought stuff for us to snorkel with and has a great recommendation list on what to bring with you to make everything be as smooth as possible. We cannot wait to come back and bring the kiddos next time! Merv you were an absolute GEM and we can't wait to see you again!!!! 100000% worth every penny spent. We haven't stopped talking about the turquoise blue water that made all my dreams come true! WOW.

The best part about it was the no fuss. It was very stress free and easy to rent them plus there were no restrictions on where you could go. This isn't the type of place where they put 3 buoys in the water and tell you that you can do laps around them until you get tired. My family and I had a blast exploring reefs, islands and sandbars for two hours. The shop is part of a boutique hotel. I'm thinking about staying there on my next trip. It's very nice and quaint and quiet.

They have a Tiki hut that lost its liquor license and they had a grill that was closed. They never answered the phones and while the girls were nice it wasn't worth the cost. I asked to be moved to a tent site and I was told I would have to pay for both sites as I needed a boat ramp. Oh and my boat was actually in front of the person next to me's camp site. So when the person on my right needed to access their jet skis they did so in front of my tent area and I had to go onto my campers to the left of me's campsite to get onto my boat. OHHH and the ramp. Well that can surely be extended about 6 ft. Don't bother trying to get in or out in low tide and even in almost high tide we had to have someone help us push our 21 footer off the trailer. I told the desk this and they said the property was sold so who knows what will become.

The staff was friendly and very helpful pointing out places to eat, fish and visit. Showers and bathrooms were clean, marina and beach clean. I don't blame the campgrounds for this...just uninterested parents. We will be back for sure.

We got to watch two presentations with the keepers. Afterwards, they were doing a medical check on a particular dolphin that was having stomach upset. A nice man came along and told us "a keeper smarter than we will be along soon, but I can answer your questions for now. Oh, there's someone smarter than me now!" And he gestured to one of the summer interns. They both laughed. He told us all about each dolphin and their story. He told us about the hurricanes 10 years ago, and how the water rose far above the dolphin enclosures, offering them freedom, but none of them left. It was clear he really loved these animals. He walked away to assist the team working with the dolphin. The intern turns to us and says "that's the founder of this place. He's here every single day. He's the smartest of all of us!" She was great too. She said she's been dreaming of being a dolphin trainer since she was a kid. She was from Texas, but you could tell she was exactly where she was meant to be. I hope they hire her permanently. We loved the dolphin research center and will definitely be back someday!

This time, however, we brought our kids along too. In 2021, my wife did an encounter that included shaking hands/flippers with a dolphin, rubbing their back as they swam by, and performing a couple basic training signs. For this trip, we each did the Memory Maker Meet encounter, which included the shaking hands/flippers and back rub, but most importantly, having a dolphin paint us a picture. We each chose two colors and held a canvas out while a pair of dolphins (Reese and Louie on that day) took turns spinning around with paint brushes in their mouths painting the canvases. It was very much worth the time and extra cost. Throughout the day there are opportunities included even with basic admission to watch training sessions or learn about caring for dolphins. You can very easily have a fun day and support a great cause at the same time.
