This rating is not about the quality of Coast Roofing's work, but about the company's ethics, specifically those of the owner, Robert. I first contacted him early in July, telling him that we needed our roof cleaned. The first question I asked him was whether he could do the work by our hard deadline of August 1, because this was for insurance purposes. He assured me he could do this. He came to our house, looked at the roof, took several pictures, and then sent us an estimate on 7/9/26. I replied on 7/15 with a couple of things we talked about that weren't in the contract and one thing that I remembered incorrectly that should have been. When I got no reply, I sent a followup email on 7/21 and called Robert. It wasn't until then that he told me that he wasn't going to do the work and we would be better off calling somebody else. IOW, he waited until a week before the deadline before telling us that he wouldn't do the work. This has left me scrambling to find somebody and unable to get work done. (I'm self-employed.) There were several areas where the plywood under the tiles had rotted and thet pulled off the old tile, did all the repairs, and put on the new roof in just a few days. The crew was fast, efficient, and they seemed to enjoy their work. The craftsmanship was good. The communication was clear. Robert came out to inspect the progress along the way. Coast Roofing replaced my shingle roof in early 2023. The biggest issue is that the shingle nails they used were too long and broke through on the other side of the roof, which was especially problematic under the eaves where there were hundreds of little holes with protruding nails. When I mentioned it they said they used the shortest roofing nails they make. I don't know if that's true but it seems like nail length is an obvious thing to check before replacing a roof. They sent out a guy to do repairs but he didn't bring a ladder so he could only work on the first floor eaves which was only about 25% of the job! For the eaves that he could reach, he trimmed the nails and painted over the spots, which worked ok. You can still tell there are patches but unlikely anyone will notice unless they are looking for it. Anyhow, he said he'd come back with a ladder but never returned. I called and emailed Robert at Coast Roofing numerous times to schedule the repairs but I got the run around for a while. It took months and lots of calls before they completed the job.  I also asked upfront for the extended warranty from the shingle manufacturer and Robert said no problem. The manufacturer requires the use of their underlayment and other accessories for them to honor the warranty and later I learned you also have to file a form and pay extra for it.  On the first day when they put down the underlayment, I could see that they were using two different brands. I called to sort it out and he said it didn't matter the brand of underlayment but I knew that wasn't true. The bottom line is that I'm not sure what coverage I'll have if anything goes wrong years from now. Of course, even if everything is done by the book, the value of an extended warranty is questionable so might be a moot point. Also, five of our window screens had rips presumably due to falling shingles hitting the screens as they tore off the old roof (and I have before and after photos to prove it). I definitely recommend removing all of your screens before getting that kind of work done! read more

Robert and his team are great. I've used them on two houses so far and would happily use them on a third. The first house was new with flat concrete shingles due to the architectural design and the fire zone of the building site. We used a breathable membrane due to having closed cell foam insulation under the roof decking. A complex roof with multiple hips and valleys. Excellent workmanship and advice on tile options. Great crew with a sense of humor and no objections to the owner walking around on the roof while they were installing, especially after I didn't break any concrete tiles while doing so. The second house was a remodel with a tear off and replacement with a combination of welded single ply membrane and composition shingles. Excellent work, fast clean and consistent. Great service. Tore off our old hot mop roof and installed shingles. When we found out that our skylights were cracked, they quickly picked up new thermal glass Velux units. What a difference. No heat even in direct sun. Very conscientious in making sure all the little things were done right. We had our roof replaced in October 2016, just before the rains. It is perfect. No leaks, no loose shingles, no problems. We are absolutely thrilled with the roofing job Robert did for us! After getting at least 1/2 a dozen different quotes we picked out Coast Roofing. One of our primary concerns was the 3 skylights we knew needed to be replaced along with the new roof. We had an over-sized, "custom order" one in our living room. One of the previous contractors gave us an absurd quote of nearly $2200 for replacement & installation. Coast Roofing replaced all 3 of our skylights for less than that! Robert went to bat for us by calling the skylight manufacturer, getting suggestions for replacement, then discussing our options & helping us pick out the best solution. He was very innovative! Where do I begin, Robert and his crew (especially Alex) are AMAZING!!!! I can't say nothing but good things about Coast Roofing. I am so impressed with their work ethics, their professionalism and their beautiful work. We had to reroofed our existing home due to damages and the new addition so it was important to find the right company that could do the work. I interviewed four roofing companies and received quotes. Coast Roofing wasn't the highest but they weren't the lowest either. In order to pick the right company for the job, I ask each company to give me an address of a project they are currently working on. Based on Yelp and some other reviews I chose Robert and his company to re-roof my house in Morro Bay. Presidential shingles must be applied a certain way, so I was a little worried about our complex roof geometry. His team did a perfect job. We were away for several days, but the updates and communication were great. Our landscape maintenance guy had told us horror stories and was worried about how much cleanup he'd have to do afterwards, and was then amazed when there was none. Got bids from four roofers to tear off and replace the composition shingle roof on our two-story home in SLO. I chose Robert at Coast Roofing and could not be more pleased. His pricing was reasonable and his crew delivered a great looking roof. In addition to all of the standard work (install new drip edges to match the color of the new roof, reset three skylights with new flashing, replace and paint all the pipe and vent flashing, etc.) his crew also reinforced our broken fireplace cap and installed a new solar attic fan that we had purchased at Costco. The day after his crew had finished Robert came to inspect the roof and found found debris on the roof and in the gutters that should have been removed.
