I'm kind of surprised that I'm the first to review The Backyard. I thought this place had been open…read morefor some time now, and there are definitely people coming (more on that later), but somehow I'm the first Yelper up. Well, I'll be happy to write that this spot is a solid four on the Yelp scale. I was here a few Fridays back for a friend's birthday and things were fun for what we were expecting. Now what I mean to say is, The Backyard is basically what you would think to find at your friend's house in the summer, just multiplied a few times. You've got your full bar area, a plethora of games (table top shuffle board, darts, ping pong, etc.), and the biggest draw: cornhole. You see The Backyard is really a fantastic spot to play this tailgating game. They have many lanes available and there's even leagues that take place here (it's legit). Having said that, coming on a night when there is said league leaves you with only one corn hole area. That's fine, but if you want to really play along with a whole bunch of people, a different time period might be better to come. You could of course choose to instead play those aforementioned games. Well the ones I listed were free to play, but the air hockey and pool tables still cost money. And in total, there are only one or two of each of these games. I truly thought we'd have an issue getting to play them, but actually the crowd there was really just for cornhole. And there are some tables in the back with a handful of board games if you really just want to sit with a drink and hang out. Drinks are all you can muster here because there is no food, but they don't have a problem with you bringing in outside eats (at least for the party we were attending). Mentioning that bar, the beers available were relatively basic (outside of one good Sand City brew), but they had some mixed drinks as well and the bartenders were quite friendly which is always a nice little touch. Overall, The Backyard has a lot to like. There's definitely some fun to be had, though it might depend on when you go and what is available to you. Don't expect to eat (no grilling taking place in this backyard), but you'll get probably find a decent drink and some friendly competition while here. Maybe now it'll get some more Yelp love with a review out there in the world!

I had to drag myself all the way out to Port Jefferson, which is about a million miles away on the…read moredarn Long Island Railroad from Forest Hills, to go to a friend's father's wake. Wakes always depress the hell out of me anyway, but afterward we ended up at this bar restaurant. It's a totally regular, blue-collar joint. Nothing fancy or phony about it at all. They had the usual stuff sitting out as the wake crowd shuffled in. Trays of wraps, wings, pasta, Caesar salad, sausage and peppers, that whole routine. Average food, really, but it got the job done. Everybody was feeling pretty happy as the drinks came in and went down celebrating this mans life on this depressing planet. It wasn't great or anything, but it didn't pretend to be, which I respect. If you really want to know the truth about the dining area, the whole setup in there was funny as hell. On one wall, they had all these cartoon posters, or whatever the hell they were, like Artificial Intelligence Smurfs and Angry Birds and all those childish pictures hanging up like it was a damn nursery. But then right on the other wall, they've got pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, like they're trying to act all classy and sophisticated, which just killed me. It's such a strange contrast that it almost breaks your heart. And then over on the bar side, it was just this huge square bar where a bunch of locals were sitting around watching the Mets lose on TV, some old bar fly playing a version of compacted nine pins. They were all staring at me like I had two heads or something just for wearing an expensive suit, which depressed me as well.

Also tried the chicken wings. They were crispy and cooked perfectly. So much flavor. Highly recommend going for a great time out.
