The Smugglers Den Inn is a 16th century thatched inn with family, beer garden, childrens play area and ample parking. The beer garden is where we like to crash and relax. While the kids play on the apparatus we chill with a ool drink in the sun and order from the menu full of lovely food and they always have plenty of specials on the board all made using the freshest local ingredients. It is situated in a little village called Trebellan, near Cubert, less than than 15 minutes from Newquay. You approach down a steep, high sided road which is typically Cornish and the pub is right before you and very welcoming. They have regular live entertainment and also have an annual Real Ale and Pie Festival which is is it's 9th year. It's definitely worth pulling off the beaten track and seeking it out for a refreshing treat.

Now operated by youngsters standing around chatting to each other who don't have a clue .we ordered food at the bar , only 4 tables occupied (red flag as usually full) waited approx 45 mins for food when fourth table who ordered after us got there food it was apparent our order wasn't coming ! Our order on the computer didn't go through to kitchen, so the youngsters blamed that .Appalling experience, so don't waste your time and money. So disappointing as it always was our first choice for a pub meal and a chat with the locals at the bar ( none in there on a Friday night) No food specials on the board and no advertisement of future events, live music or quiz night etc.

The spacious inside seating is divided into several areas; unfortunately, the outside ^seating provided on the ground floor level is limited and only in the back of the pub (without any view). Traditional pubs in Newquay are rather few and far between, and only a handful of them are cask-marque. Red Lion is one of the better options; what would only rate as a medium-quality pub in other, more real-ale friendly towns must rank as a superior one in cocktail-bar-focused Newquay. It is a popular place especially among older patrons (such as myself), and can get quite busy towards the late afternoon, early evening. The food on offer is superior pub grub, and my dish (grilled whitefish on beetroot, with small potatoes and a rather sad "salad" garnish) was decent but nothing to write home about. While I had drinks at the Red Lion several times during my stay I decided not to eat there again. Service was down-to-earth and friendly, if a bit rushed (the place wasn't even half-full). They are very child friendly and provide high chairs, and they are also very very friendly with smiley happy waiting staff who are even patient with my children who change their minds several times before they let them escape! There is also a large car park for ease of parking, small space out the front with chauirs for summer al fresco dining. And for kids they have a slide, monkey bars, zip wire and other bits and pieces of kids play equiptment. For adults they also do a great new Years Eve evening, with this year it being a local comedian who also sings and does karaoke. Well worth a visit especially for the food!!

Standard pub fare, but well done and a nice piece of fish. A good atmosphere in the main bar too, there isn't much else in the area and this place does well by its regular clientele. Set back from the road, the Malsters Arms seems to be the hub of the village with a mixture of traditional and contemporary decor. It has a warm and relaxing feel as soon you enter, empahasised by the friendly and helpful staff. The entrance is straight into the traditional bar area where you can sit and have a quiet drink. The more modern restaurant areas, branch off from this area. On our first visit we had tiger prawn linguini and stuffed mushrooms, all the food was exquisitely presented and full of flavour. The desserts were again packed with flavour, and presented wonderfully on stylish black plates. Not cheap at £14-£17 for a main, and over £5 for a dessert, but worth it for the food and the general ambience of the Malsters. As we were only on holiday for a week, we just had to go back for a second visit. Bathed in fading summer light and having chosen a simply sublime sea bass and salmon dish, the restaurant at the Maltsters is one of the finest dining experiences I've ever had! I would recommend it to anyone, I just wish we lived nearer! If you are going to go though, book, or otherwise you will be disappointed.
